Well, I guess I'll go first, since I'm the one asking. Yesterday, my best exploring buddy, myself, and another friend who thought it sounded cool went to see an old school in Mississippi. We usually day explore, but we went at night because of timing. That was probably the first mistake. I swear I shall never ever explore at night again. Everything was going smoothly, other than no good lighting, and then we left.

And then I set off the car alarm in front of the fucking place and like a million houses in the suburban neighborhood, we all screamed and ran for the car, I floored it with no headlights and while trying to turn the lights on I missed a stop sign and nose dived into a steep ass ditch going like 50.
Thank God for jeeps and steel bumpers because we dug like a five foot hole in the earth and had to call a tow truck and somehow the only thing that broke was the windshield. Oh and also my friends face because she didn't have a seat belt and went straight into the roll cage.

So since I just shared my very, extremely, monumentally stupid, somewhat near death experience, anyone else have any times where literally everything was going great until you left?

Not me, but my buddy once looked back at me from the bushes and said, "Let's just go. I really don't care if people see me leaving; I only care if they see me going in. Let's get to the car". He walks out casually right alongside traffic, I chase after him, and we both get stopped by a motorcycle cop. (We walked off with a warning.)

Ah yes, I love it when my friends make great decisions like that, but it does raise an interesting point. Can they really do anything once you’ve left as long as there’s no proof graffiti or spray paint or stolen things? Where does it stop being a crime they can catch you for? Like it’s pretty obvious what we were doing after the accident bc it was literally 900 ft directly in front of our entrance, but they can’t really prove that’s how and why we were there I don’t think. Thanks for the reply, it really gave me food for thought!

There used to be an active church I would explore every Friday night. They had some kind of service until around 11pm where they would all sing in the basement, and I'd enter and go up to the roof. Once I stayed too late, and heard people leaving below. All I could do was wait and hope for an opening. I heard someone say bye to the last people leaving, and start walking upstairs toward me. I tiptoed up higher and escaped. Finally she left, and locked the door behind me. I had to unlock the door from the inside and go out, which meant I couldn't lock it behind me. Regrettable, but all I could do at that point.

There was a basketball arena that was gonna be torn down. I went in when it still had power and everything was there. It had been a long night of getting to know the place and testing the security, so we left feeling satisfied with our comfortability with the site. Next trip, everything but the main area is gone. No power, no court, no seats, but still the most amazing single room I've been in. The sheer size made shooting it very overwhelming. I left with like 5 shots thinking I could just go back the next weekend, but then we got caught.

Moral of the story, never save something for the next trip, because you might not get one.

Said to each other "There's no way they bothered putting cameras in the basement"

Guess where they put a motion detecting IR camera? And even better, guess who was staring at it like a deer in the headlights when it went "click!"

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

Yeah..... been there.

We were going to leave an abandoned school but the drop was a little too high out the window we came through. I had my extendable ladder, but we were using it to get up to the window from inside. We decided to fumble through the basement for another way out. We walked right into a motion sensor which alerted the police officer who was already sitting in the school parking lot. The next 10 hours were spent playing cat and mouse with the police and their dog inside the massive abandoned school. They even found my car and pinged my cell phone, which was thankfully on ultimate power saver which inhibits location services. The only other way out we found was a 20 foot high rear window above where the police were doing foot patrols hours earlier. My extendable ladder was only 14 feet tall and too flexible to support us. I wound up going back through the school alone to retrieve a taller wooden ladder from the auditorium. I stuffed it out the window as the police continued to circle. I trew my extendable ladder down and dangled myself out the window until my feet touched the wooden ladder, which thankfully held my weight. After we all got down we exited the alley just as a police van cruised past. My friends were far enough ahead of me that they were able to warn me in time to ditch the ladder. They didnt say anything to us though.

Im sure there are more, but thats the first one that comes to mind.

I remember you telling me all about that in vivid detail when it happened...

I can't think of anything I've done that's extremely dumb when exiting somewhere other than falling on my behind a few times or getting stuck climbing out of a window. The only sort of 'clusterfuck' which I can recall, which is more embarrassing than anything happened a few years ago at an abandoned football stadium (a small town local one, not one of the mega millions type ones before you ask!)

The way in we used involved climbing up a tree which had a branch jutting out over the fence which went pretty well but when inside the grounds we saw a likely looking gate off to one side which *should* have been an easier way to get out - right next to an open bowling alley. After finishing and packing up we went to the gate and sure enough, it was tall but relatively easy to climb. One of us went up and over and I followed them, however when I peeked over the top I was surprised to see a worker from next door standing there, cigarette in his mouth, staring at us. By this point I was sat on top of the gate and for some reason unbeknown to myself to this day, I completely froze up. I simply could not move, and there I was perched on top of this gate for everyone to see. The guy standing there then very kindly went to get a ladder from inside his building, and just as he was coming out and putting it on the gate, a police car drove down the side road we were on. It turned out though we had nothing to worry about as they were more concerned whether we'd seen a missing child, although you could see them shake their heads in disbelief at the clusterfuck they'd stumbled upon.

Not going back to Beth Steel for another shoot.
Beat the odds 3 or 4 times, figured the odds would reach out and grab me eventually.
Security there was real, and creative.
At times they lurk in the blast furnaces.
Because of the size and limited number of guards, they couldn't be everywhere at once. Generally they guarded the perimeter and long open areas from a vantage point.
Spotting them first was essential as was a predawn entry.
Fun times. Got a heads up from others here at UER that helped me greatly to spot and evade security my first time in

Another roll of the dice been nice... if you don't play, you can't win.

We were driving along a small road and saw a big, partly destroyed barn. Walked through a patch of forest to get there to find even more, partially burnt down and destroyed structures that were fun to explore. We saw a house nearby and heard someone working over there, but figured we'd be safe as we were being quiet.

On the way back, we didn't want to trek through the forest again and decided to take the road back to our car, the guy living there noticed us and was a little miffed but calmed down as we explained ourselves. I never take the lazy way out anymore.

Well all of these sound like no bueno experiences, (the ladder thing is terrifying, at that point I’d probably just drop dead and let the cops find my body lmao.) I feel slightly less stupid now, so thank you for that and now I’ve got a list of things not to do while exiting a place so yay learning! Honestly leaving is probably where I slip up the most because I’m just trying to get way away very fast.
One of my other mishaps leaving involved coming out right as a cop passed, seeing him turn around as we dashed to the car and driving right past him as he tried to turn around where we just were. Like we all stared at each other and somehow I drove all the way back over the state line before he could catch up. He never put his lights on, so I guess we weren’t too big of a concern but I was out of body trying to get away and drive the car. The art of leaving is the real struggle to getting into stuff lol

Predawn and leave after it gets dark if you must.
Worked like a charm at Beth every time.
Although twice I sauntered out late in the afternoon... once by a cop sitting in the parking lot but that hadn't seen me scale the fence by the tracks.
I was covered with gear as he looked at me knowing where I had most likely been.

Totally. I mean, everything needs proof. If they want to charge you with theft, they need an object you stole. If they want to charge you with vandalism, they need to find something you destroyed. I feel like trespassing is a little more difficult; places with cameras make the charge easy, but what happens when they don't actually catch you in there? I feel like that would end up as a court battle or something in most cases. Aside from that, I'm 90% sure that all the proof they need if they catch you on the property, is that they caught you on the property. Police, that is. Citizens probably need photo evidence and stuff.

If it's posted or even fenced off and a cop sees you there that's all they need for trespassing in all the states I've been in.
Active agriculture areas, student housing and patient facilities need not be fenced off or even posted in some states... ignorance of the law is no defense in court. Know the laws for the state(s) you're active in.

The pictures are somewhat irrelevant most times you're arrested for trespassing when shooting. Many times if that's all you're doing they will cut you slack but not always especially in sites they're cracking down on.

Cameras always help on site but I have no court experience. I've never met anyone who's been to court for trespassing either. I can easily assume that they don't help in Massachusetts though; our laws and courts are a little mean.

I have. My pics showed what I said I was doing was what I was doing.
Had a friendly half hour sit down with the police chief and got felony charges reduced to city misdemeanors later with no lawyer.
Saved me a lot more trouble and expense.

Remember this though, before you slam the shutter release, is it a good idea to capture that image? I don't taunt cops... taking a pic of the cop's perimeter for me might have looked cool but the cops might have thought otherwise.
Not hitting the shutter release on stupid shots has saved me major grief with LEOs twice... no joke.
Yeah MA tends to be tough on splorers from what I've seen here

Here's something pretty dumb that my friend did while we were leaving a site:

We were walking single-file through what I can only describe as a fuselage suspended from the side of the building, him behind me, when I heard one hell of a CRASH behind me. I turned around and my friend was gone. I bolted back through that fuselage and yelled through the hole in the floor to see if he was okay. He fervently assured me that he was, so that's when I asked if I could take a picture.

Always test your footing before you put your weight down. He made the mistake of trusting that piece of sheet metal, which was only precariously balanced over that gap, and it's a lucky thing he wasn't seriously hurt by the fall. Miraculously, neither the crash nor the sight of him limping off the grounds with me attracted the attention of the cops stationed in the area.

Damn!!! Glad nobody was seriously injured! I’m a pretty hefty guy and I’ve had a few close calls as well. I got myself trapped one time in a floor I thought for sure was going to collapse. Fortunately I made it out without falling through. Gotta love rot!
