Loose Dogs in the Area

I was walking through the neighborhood yesterday, on my way to take some pictures of a local VFW post that isn't being used right now (it isn't totally abandoned. There are people trying to get it renovated). As I rounded one corner a loose dog came running up to me and was fairly friendly to me. The dog then started running up the street towards some people talking in the street, one person with their dog going for a walk.

As the loose dog got to them, it immediately started fighting with the other dog. Fortunately, we were able to fend it off and get it tied up to a telephone pole before any serious injuries were made. The entire time, the loose dog was not aggressive at all towards any of the people involved, even as they were kicking and pulling it off the leashed dog.

It was a good reminder for me that not all of the dangers in UE are at the location or are trip/fall. Keep you ears open out there.

It caught me very off guard how aggressive the loose dog was considering how gentle she was when she first came up to me. There certainly wasn't anything to provoke the fight that I saw.

I was trying to be funny, anyone that knows dogs knows they do not always have an obvious reason to provoke a fight.

Ive been around dogs all my life, its surprising how they react to another dog and not always in a consistent manner.

I've had a dog and been around dogs since I was little as well. I've never seen a dog be so friendly with people and so aggressive to another dog at the same time.

Happy dog was a rescued fighting pit bull.
I rough housed with him many a time.
He was a very strong dog.
He would growl, bark and play bite you but never break your skin.
Other dogs were not so fortunate...

This is how canids establish rank, its part of their prehistoric past.

Domestic dogs are actually freaks they have been cross bred and bred down to make them look a certain way and consequently their historic predictable behavior goes out the window at times.

Dogs that are abused or have to compete for food or attention can get bitey. If they feel their territory isn't being respected they react accordingly. Defense of pups is another sure way to provoke a biting.

Dogs out here in the rural wasteland are a lot different than urban dogs but also the same in many ways. Some people may not recall but there were a couple small kids mauled and killed by pit bull terriers back in the 90s here in Texas.

I had a friend that was mauled by a dog as a toddler and almost died. When we met in second grade, she had scars on her face, but they were gone when we reunited as adults. Someone had neglected to close a gate and the dog ran out of its yard and attacked her for whatever reason. She couldn't have been older than three years old and had to undergo several surgeries as a result of the attack.

The neighbor's dog did the exact same thing to me when I was 14. I was just walking down the street when it bolted down the driveway and sank its teeth into my upper arm. I'm convinced it was going for my throat but didn't leap high enough.

The owner apologized and since he showed us the up to date rabies vaccine tag we never reported it, but to this day I don't know why it attacked me. My best guess is that I smelled like our relatively new dog (we had her for a few months at that point) and it got territorial.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I hate this as much as I love dogs. When the story broke about the pit bull mauling/death it was right on the cusp of a major surge in pit bull ownership. Typical redneck families riding around in their trucks with their pitie wearing a bandana instead of a collar, I actually saw one jump out of a pick up in traffic to attack another mongrel pitie mix on the sidewalk, caused a major traffic jam and confrontation with the other redneck dog owner.

We had several that chronically ran loose in our east Dallas neighborhood. My wife was terrified to be out in the yard with our 2 year old daughter. I had a ringside seat when a big old animal control officer chased one down with a noose stick and corned it. What a freaking fight. It was like having a wild horse on the end of a 6ft plastic stick. Holy crap.

Funny thing is when the state cracked down on the dog fighting community pit bulls started being raised like normal pets and I believe they have lost some of their aggressive traits. But don't test it. Any dog can be aggressive. I have a neighbor that had a big old mountain cur at least 100lbs, he was supposed to be mean but he liked me. One day a beautiful big blue pitie just showed up in their yard and moved in with the old cur, Everyone freaked out and wanted to kill it the pitie was semi aggressive. I began baby talking to it and calling it, gave it some treats and petted him what do you know the pit bull from Hell got all submissive and friendly. My wife and the neighbors were horrified at first but the little guy started following me around wanting some more treats. Happy ending, some other neighbor came over and adopted him before the first neighbors who wanted to kill it could get their rifles out. Last I heard he was a good pet

True story. My wife was walking down our street with our daughter who was about 10 at the time. Out of nowhere a 40lb Shepard type border collie mix came running out from under a house and bit my wife on the leg. We called animal control and she went to the doctor for a relatively small bite but it broke the skin. I showed up from work and grabbed my shotgun and went looking for it so we could test it for rabies. It was living under a house that was owned by some absentee slim ball guy that never fed the dog or cared for it. And most scary was it was not wearing a tag and probably not vaccinated. Luckily for the dog the animal control girl got a noose on it and dragged it out from under the house before I had to splatter it. The cops showed up and saw me with the shotgun but it was all good they wanted to look it over and admire it was a customized 870 police model hahaha. Anyway dog was quarantined and turned out to be negative so big relief. The fucking owner got to hear from me face to face and he refused to go retrieve and register his dog so it was impounded and probably euthanized. Then we found out why she attacked.

Week later we saw a yard full of pups at this guys house. She was obviously mistreated and protecting her litter.

People are half the problem / end of rant...

What a nice story
So many people never give pits a chance just because they're pits.

Still far too much dog and cock fighting going on in Texas and NM.
I have no empathy for the people who do this; they are soulless ghouls.

My experience with pits has been mostly very good.
Happy dog was a great dog.
An abandoned brindle pit I rescued from dying in the desert, Bob Barker was quit intimidating when I first encountered him late one night.
He was barking his ass off out of fear and perhaps a misplaced sense of territory. The desert? Whatever.
I verbally backed him down as he barked unseen in the shadows. I could tell he was a fair size but he backed off and relented.
The next morning he was right beside the van's driver door; he insisted I deal with him.
He was friendly, very dehydrated, with small cuts from living in the desert. Gave him to a friend who still has him to this day.
As with many abused pits he turned out to be a really good dog.

Part #9 of caring/handling for pits sums them up perfectly.
https://www.pocket...w-brindle-pitbull/

Dogs naturally like humans; they were bred to.
Dogs are intuitive; they respond positively to kindness and control with fairness.

Never show fear to a hostile dog; much better to have murder in your eyes and heart.

&

Here's one of the best Vet/dog stories I've seen in a long time.
An unusual story that anything is possible with a good attitude.
This Vet didn't leave his rescued dog behind...

"She did what she’s supposed to do,” Guillermo Lorenzo,
Yeah whatever... not liking this cunt much either.
Those dogs do the same thing if they got loose in the street.

Where I live most everyone kills coyotes on sight. Not me I like to see them around controlling rodents, part of the ecosystem

Some ranchers believe a 50lb coyote kills their 1500lb steers because they saw some eating on a dead steer carcass.

This exceptionally big guy was hanging around our house got a snap shot of him just outside my fence with Canon 30D 85mm zoom lens. Close to 60-70lb I estimate,

Here is another 85mm shot, farther away of a "blue coyote"

Blue coyotes are seen frequently around here and are a result of hair loss due to the mange.

This is my dog, weighs 82lbs all muscle and would love to kill a coyote. He hates coyotes! Sometimes they come in our yard. Big mistake if he catches them.

My cat was eaten by a coyote when I was a kid. I was the lucky one to find what was left of him in our front yard when I was about ten years old. It took a few years to get over the resentment toward coyotes as a whole, but I did. Now I just find it disheartening and sad that they have been driven from their homes over and over again so that we can have our HOA’s and golf courses.

Jeeeesze that's horrible... coyotes are nuts at best but most times just down right creepy.
Never liked them from the first time I saw my first one.
There was a cute coyote pup that like to chase the front wheel of my van at one spot along the I-20 service road a few years back.
He thought it a great sport.
It was funny as hell to see this ball of fur charging after the van tire like a Hellfire missile.
I gave it gas to outdistanced his attack.
Someone ran him over a week or two latter

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
