I've known of this place for quite a long time and have been waiting for it to close down. Forgot to check in for a few years and it went to a straight heat out.

I decided to upgrade my camera for more on the go ease and it was worth it. Most of these pictures are handheld or supported on anything I can find.

Security patrols regularly and tries to be sneaky with lights off.

Overall very nice complex of buildings with vibe of zombies or some sort of Apocalypse that happened. Security patrols add to that atmosphere a lot.

A good find with some high quality photos!

Is this place actually abandoned other than the guards?

It sounds classier if you pronounce it "tray-passing"

An interesting little slice of Albertan history here. We assume the preservation efforts are more in the interest of stalling an expensive abatement procedure rather than repurposing the structures.

Market value determines this as does to a lesser extent the value of the site scrap metal.
Copious scrap metal drives down the demo cost and is factored into demo contracts.
Large industrial sites can yield a lot; non-industrial much less so.

Scrappers gutting copper or other valuable metals not only destroys site infrastructure/chances of reuse but latter drive up demo costs.
Sprappers can also make the abatement much more difficult and expensive.
Contained asbestos is much easier to abate.

Sony A6000, so much better than my clunker dslr. Most of the buttons are too small for my hands but a much easier camera for on the go.

If this is the place I think it is, I have some information that might (or might not) be useful in exploring undetected.

I befriended one of the security guards through the fence (by simply standing there and watching the buildings in mild awe) and he inadvertently gave me some information you're not really supposed to give away.

- There's only the 1 guard on patrol at any one time, in 1 vehicle
- As noted, they like to drive around with the lights off, but the vehicle has a bit of a noisy engine so they're not as stealthy as they think
- Shift change is every 8 hours: 23:00, 07:00, and 15:00
- The guard on duty does not have keys to the buildings themselves, only the gate padlock(s)

From my own observation:
- The streetlamps are dual action solar charged units - they come on during the night in "low" mode, and when they detect motion they switch to "high" mode, and I suspect they send a signal to the guard via wifi or bluetooth or god knows what because I was at the northmost parking lot and there's such a unit "pointed" at one of the padlocked gates and when I walked under it it switch to "high" mode, and 2 minutes later the guard showed up. Conversation ensued...

Apparently there's high levels of asbestos and lead paint in the buildings. I do know there's a huge vehicle maintenance show with what looks like 3 or 4 bays (west of the water tower). It is a shame the government doesn't rehabilitate the buildings as some kind of homeless remediation shelter or something.

I'd love to get in and have a look around sometime.

Well, the past few weeks I've had occasion to stop at this place at night, and I have noticed a few changes.

Most notably, the solar street lighting has been deactivated, with the exception of 3 lamps. I found this most curious.

Tonight I stopped by and spent roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes walking the fenceline. There appears to be no security on site anymore, or if there is, their patrols are quite infrequent.

I observed tire tracks alongside the inside of the fence, which is no big surprise because the security guard used to drive alongside the fence interior to scan it for holes, breeches, etc. However, I took a picture of the tracks and they appear to be no more recent than a month ago.

It is my considered opinion that security is currently not present on the property. The deactivation of the street lighting makes no sense since each lamp is a self-contained unit and not a drain on the property's hydro bill. The apartment complexes on the east side of the property still have their huge ass yard lights on 24/7, however.

The aforementioned light that I triggered by walking past a certain gate is also turned off. I walked under it and nothing at all happened.

I drove around to the "front" entrance of the site, or more specifically the gate that blocks the roadway leading to the main entrance. Curiously enough, the street lights there were mostly on. I snapped a picture of the sign on the gate but it didn't come out too well. As I was reversing out, a lamp that was off came on right as I was underneath it. Couldn't help but wonder if someone watching from Toronto via a camera flipped it on to spook me.

I suspect that the security firm got fired come the New Year and they've been without a human security presence since. The deactivation of the solar lights honestly makes little sense, as it would be less safe for someone patrolling - vehicle or on foot. Not to mention that once the snow melts a trespasser would be virtually invisible the entire time he/she was on site. 75 minutes with no patrol is a long time.

Pictures, for whatever they're worth.

An additional note I just realized - the phone number for the property management (Edon Management) is the exact same phone number for the security firm as posted on the opposite side of the property.

I'll tell you what. You come on over and go do that. I'll wait outside and run interference for ya when/if security/police show up.

So a follow-up post, just because I can.

That light that came on when I was leaving the other night is in fact a fully automated unit, programmed to turn on for exactly 40 seconds at exactly 5 minute intervals.

The other thing of note is that since Red Deer had a ton of snow fall on it in the last day or so, I figured I'd check the road beyond the gate to see if security had in fact been on/off site as per their 8 hour shift rotations.

As you can see, there's zero tire tracks.

Therefore, this obviously means that contract security is not present and hasn't been for some time. The reasons for which I could only guess at, but I'd imagine the province opted not to renew the contract for 2020.

The site is open season for UE I'd say.
