This is the last time I ever let someone convince me that I'm mistaken what I say bugs like my blood better than most people. Anyway, we had quite a little hike to get where we were going. Here's where we started, and a friend we made along the way.

When we finally reached the campus, we were greeted with razor wire.

Once upon a time, if you couldn't care for a mentally ill person, you could dump them at a state-run asylum like this one. There they would ostensibly get the food, shelter, and care that they needed to survive, but sometimes they also got abuse of every sort from staff that were undersupervised and undertrained. Naturally, these places needed more money, and better people to manage its spending. Thanks to Reaganomics, they got the opposite.

Because of the drastic budget cuts put in place by the Reagan administration, abuse and neglect went from being occasional problems brought about by bad actors to systemic realities brought about by the institutions themselves not being able afford to hire adequate staff. Naturally, this was used as an excuse to shutter the institutions entirely.

As a result of every government run asylum in America getting shut down in the 80s, the country is dotted with abandoned campuses just like this one. And as for the patients that lived in these places, well, after the asylums closed down, suddenly there were homeless people everywhere.

THE BATH

sorry i had to

Nice little Silence of the Lambs quote:

Contemporary articles on the horrible mistreatment that took place in this facility's waning days mention this room, where diapered invalids were left to lay in their own filth for hours and hours at a time because staff was spread too thin to properly care for anyone.

Flickr Album

And that's where my spare camera battery ran out. We explored less than half of the campus on this day, and we ran into 3 other urbex groups while we were out and about. I'll add this to the growing list of places I might have to return to in the future. With bug spray. Lots of bug spray. And more batteries. And a dust mask.

Holy crap that place is trashed - however I could still easily waste a day there. Nice share man - to me, it was worth your bug bites!

Nice work, these are some great shots! Trashed though it is, I'd still check it out. I love that old dentist's chair...hope your bites heal soon; bugs tend to like me a bit too much, but a swarm of skeeters beats a swarm of cops any day! 😏
I'll sometimes carry a tube of Anbesol with me (as well as bug spray), and it helps dull the itching pretty quickly.
Anyway, thanks for sharing! 😃

From the first Black and White shot you had my attention SOooo i kept looking and finding your explore one of the best ive seen lately. Loved the Arched wrought iron gates. Another one of my faves is the room with the stuffed chairs and the purple face on the wall. Great tour through this old mental hospital. Alot of cool pics here and worth the bites...as long as you didnt run into any ticks.

The pictures were impressive, but for future reference it would be a good idea for everyone involved to wear more clothes, covering arms and legs. It protects against not just bug bites but also ticks, as well as scratches on potentially sharp and rusty objects.

Ive heard horror stories about the bugs here, they've been feasting on explorers for ages. Glad you pushed through though, looks like a fun time.

This place is severely decayed. If there were three other groups there, it must be remote. Great gallery, go back, share more.

Holy shit, this place has gone downhill. I didn't even recognize it until halfway down the page. It seems like the bugs take turns in harassing explorers: mosquitoes for you, ticks for me, and chiggers for others I've spoken to.

Great shots overall, you show a lot of areas that I've still never seen.

I remember going years back and having about ten of those super small ticks all over my ankles. Well worth it but not so sure anymore though.

Oh don't you worry I got plenty of chiggers. Zero ticks though! Must have been too late in the year, thank god. And the mosquitoes bit straight through my shirt. I walked out the door without my Cutter Backwoods or Off Deep Woods, but next time I'm turning around and driving back home, time be damned!

This place always surprises me with how interesting it is, and then reminds me with how trashed it is. Nice set.
