Recently, my friends and I visited this abandoned stone structure in mid-state Massachusetts. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be publicly accessible, though I'll refrain from naming it, if only to be on the safe side (you can find it online quite easily).

First a bit of background on this place - this "castle" was to be the manner of a certain railway magnate / retired general. Unfortunately, funds ran dry before he was able to complete his vision, and only a large medieval style tower and an associated bungalow were completed. Later, the structure was sold and converted into a sanitarium, and later briefly used as a banquet hall for a troupe of hunters. Sadly, the structure burned down during a Fourth of July celebration, and only the stone components remain.

When hiking to the location, we saw this crazy stump carved like a mushroom. Really set the mood.



Eventually, we made it to what remains of the castle. After passing through an uninspiring stone wall, we entered into an open courtyard. Later we would learn this was actually what remained of the bungalow.







The "courtyard" also has a fire pit, visible in some later shots, that had this ominous stain plastered to the back side:


Exiting the courtyard the way we came, we went around and to the right side of the tower complex (with respect to our previous perspective).





Coming up to the tower, we could see some charred wooden remains embedded in the tower, presumably left over from the fire:



We could also look over the courtyard we had just been standing in, and get a good some good shots of the fireplace





And of course, we were duty bound to get a few shots of the inside of the turret





Saved for last, a closing shot of the tower fading away as you make your way down the rest of the trail.

Interesting stone/concrete composite

I like these pics...never a bad thing to find an explorable castle. Sounds like it has a rather colorful history. Thanks for sharing!

So my theory is that the concrete sections used to be inside the bungalow. I read that the bungalow was originally two stories; furthermore, we noticed etchings where crossing support boards might have been inserted into the sides of walls to support a floor above, supporting this claim. So the "courtyard" was more likely the basement of the original bungalow - implying that the top floor was probably directly connected to that side of the turret. Perhaps the concrete sections of the tower were simply those sections that were originally inside?

That's my guess, but who knows?

The concrete looks as if it was integrated into the original structure when it was built but I'm need really able to get the overview you did.
If the stone was added later you probably be able to discern concrete pours to match up the old foundation with the new superstructure.
Mind you concrete has been used for over a thousand years and is an excellent foundation material.
