Built and opened in the 1980s, Waterfall Park was once a popular attraction for both Outer Banks tourists and Rodanthe locals.

However, like many small amusement parks of the day, it slowly declined through the 90s and 2000s, and ultimately closed in 2010 in the wake of the recession.
2.
The place was already falling into disrepair by the time Hurricane Irene hit in 2011.
3.
Since then, the former Waterfall Park has continuously deteriorated into ruin.
4.
Including this rickety-looking bungee tower.
5.
As you can see, nature's already begun to take it back.
6.
Parts of the former racetrack have been torn up. From what I could tell, racing/go-karting was its specialty.
7.
Case in point.

Like I said, the specialty was racing, but there was also the bungee tower, the pool, and the waterslide (all previously shown).
The owners have obviously not done much to maintain the property (the same family still owns the land), and just a month before my visit the park was declared a public nuisance.
