A rare look inside a decommissioned power plant

I recently got (authorized) access inside this inactive power plant that many of you will recognize. It was built in the 70s and decommissioned in 2011 over environmental concerns. Private developers bought the property a few years ago, and they now have plans to turn the power plant into a hotel. Since the main structure is already very earthquake-resistant, they would rather transform it rather than demolish it completely.

9. Bonus photo: The numbers in the elevator indicate the elevation in feet rather than the floor number!

Wow, just wow. I can’t even pick a favorite. Just goes to show how worth it is to get authorized access sometimes.

Totally! Some parts of the plant (notably the control room) are near-impossible to enter without authorization.

Our region has been waiting years to see what's inside this location.

I think you should get a "PSW Commendation" star on your profile for this, lol.

Doing a little googling, it appears there's a free tour that's open to the public. Is that what you did, or did you get to go places that aren't in the public tour?

For anyone interested, the free public tour takes you to all of the areas pictured (I think). It's done once a month, and worth doing.

I got there on a tour, but it was a one-time opportunity, I didn't know they have regular tours there now, this is probably a newer thing. Given that, I don't know how different the current tours are from the one I took.

They now do a tour once a month, open to the public. I got to go everywhere pictured in your post. Haven't gotten around to going through pics as I've been awfully busy, but https://imgur.com/a/N3L6Oih has them all (of course imgur rearranged them).

I asked how long they expected to continue the tours and while there was no definitive number, they claimed they weren't planning on stopping any time soon. They need public support to redevelop, and they think that's more likely if they offer the public tours. So yes, this is a limited time opportunity, it will eventually get turned into housing and businesses, but I have no idea of the timeline.

Eventually I'll get around to going through the pics, normally I wouldn't just post the whole set, but it gives a decent idea of where you get to go.

The next tour is July 24.
