It appears that someone is in the process of boarding up the remaining buildings of the Mount Tom Ski Area in Holyoke Ma.
Thing is... with Plexiglass. Expensive, 1/8 inch Bayer plexiglass. Doors, breaches and windows alike.

That has to cost a ton of money, versus wood planks.

All I can think is that they hope if weekend explorers can look inside and see they wont tear off the boards?
Any thoughts on this?

I can't speak for that one, but I noticed a very similar treatment starting to be used on some schools in Detroit. I wonder if it is to try and seal the building, but still provide visibility so that cops driving by can see if someone is inside. (which plywood and VPS doesn't allow)

Detroit has moved from VPS to Videofied cameras that are motion-based and will alert police. Took this from one of those shitty detroit urbex websites. I presume this is what you are talking about. The cameras are super efficient and the only way to get rid of them is to cut the power.

The cameras, known as Videofied, were relatively small cameras that would hang on the walls inside the vacant school. When somebody would enter the school, the cameras would be turned on by sensing motion and they would begin recording. The video clips were then sent to Detroit Public Schools Police, who would respond to the proper scene. Videofied was responsible for arresting hundreds of scrappers, trespassers, vandals, and even the occasional urban explorer. The Videofied system was Detroit Public School’s response to the Vacant Property Security (VPS) dilemma. By 2009, it seemed that the metal VPS sheets were disappearing on many of the vacant schools because the scrappers had figured out how to remove them. As of late 2009, the newly vacant schools would now get Videofied instead of VPS. Some of the vacant schools that had already closed and already had VPS would also now get the Videofied as well.

I agree with you about vps, the boards just scare people off.

Went by a few weeks later. Most of the plexiglass was cracked, painted or scratched up. Some whole sheets were missing. I'm afraid that this place won't be around much longer. I've done it a dozen times, ( even with my Mom, who is 76). But its one of my favorites. learned to ski there in highschool.

I was up in 2006. I'm stunned there is anything left. In 2006 they were starting work a little down the road. but it was just a single bucket moving some dirt around. There is a company called Rise holdings, they grow Rythm Flower ( weed ) in Holyoke and were looking at the area to setup a string of greenhouses. Not sure if that fell through or not. When the state was just medical they were fine where they are at, but now the rec shops are opening they were eyeballing that site to grow the recreational weed.

I saw plexiglass boarding for the first time on a recent trip to Detroit.
Three of the largest and most well known schools are now sealed this way.

Plexiglass is a hell of a lot more difficult to break and it looks much more aesthetically pleasing than boards or VPS panels.
