Two Victorian factories

I have many pics I want to post, so I thought I'd post two giant empty industrial buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s that happen right down the street from each other. If you're from my area, you've probably spent some time here yourself. let's start with a lathe factory.

The building was built from 1904 to 1910. not exactly Victorian, i know, but it replaced the earlier 1880's building. they built lathes and telescopes. during both wars, they built individual parts for guns, planes, and tanks. they also built sniper scopes. at this point they had over 7000 people working and was one of the largest factories in the city. over 30 large observatories have used their telescopes, and some still are. in 1919, they donated an observatory to the city college. The observatory closed in the 80's, and is also abandoned. as industry left america, the company was barely hanging on and folded in the early 80's. the factory was abandoned by 1985 with the very few employees they had losing their jobs.

The next one was built in 1880. There’s not really much information on it. It was built as a for rail lines. In 1917, it was discovered that the power station was too weak and the plant was shut down. For several years it was used to make ice machines. Soon after, a well known electronics company moved in and built a 5 story addition in 1922. But in 1933, they left and went to a new building. In 1936, a company that builds parts for car and airplane engines bought a couple buildings. They flourished during WW2, but directly after the war started hurting. But soon the need for parts came again and they were enjoying business. In 1958, a company moved in that built radar guiding systems for missiles, but moved out in 1963. In the same year a company that built lighting fixtures moved in, and in 1979 it has closed and the factory went abandoned. This is one of the easiest places I've been to. Its very popular for exploration and the cops turn a bit of a blind eye to it. I’ts probably one of the most popular places for exploration in the area.

Some nice shots in there. HUGE explores = good times. Bonus point question - Was that where the first scenes outside the walls were filmed for The Scorch Trials from The Maze Runner series? Probably a stab in the dark - but it reminded me of that - that may have been an abandoned mall....

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Cool spots! I like big places like this. Fun looks fun to run around in even with all the graffiti.

Thank you. They certainly were. There wasn’t anything left, but after being vacant for so long and being as popular as they are, I wouldn’t expect them to. They were both really good sized, and great for pictures. Good thing the graffiti wasn’t low effort stuff. Not all of it atleast. Makes it easier to appreciate.

Spectacular pictures, what cool locations! I especially love the pictures of the rooftops, the look out on the city in 24 and the rafters in 39-41 are incredible.

You've got some really cool pictures in here! Even though they're empty, they're probably fun to just wander around in. The second one looked really cool in some of the later shots. Thanks for posting.

they certainly were! it was nice not really having to worry about police and being able to explore calmly. if you look at pic 34, you can actually see them filming a rap video. they probably felt odd with us exploring around them. at least the graffiti was pretty good. thanks for looking.

Oh I do too. It’s very complex. But I can only imagine it’s how it’s roof hasn’t collapsed in the almost 40 years of it being vacant and open to the elements. Although some of them were cut.

I hadn’t thought of it that way, but you’re perfectly right. That would be a great album cover. Thank you.

Of course, slap a catchy phrase on there like "Lonesome Town" with a few sub names and you're ready to release the hottest Urbex album of the year.
