There isn't much here other then occasional trash and tires. A lot of stuff is missing, and all that's left is a few concrete structures, some we assumed for for a old fashioned conveyor of some sort. You can see up close in the structures that there is some iron ore in it. It was built here because of the rich quantity of iron ore in the area.

(Sorry about the shitty pictures, I only had my potato phone on me at the time)

I can't find anything online, I'll stop by the local library and see if they have anything on it!

A few roads back there where quite a few, but you had to go pretty well off the beaten path to get here, surrounded by hunting lease. People dump trash everywhere on these roads

That's an interesting place. Imagine what you'd find with a metal detector..

Hmm, not a bad Idea! But that isn't uncouth for a explorer to do in a place like this, is it? Im pretty sure it's public land but I just dont wanna go digging up a lesser known historical site without getting some second opinions.

In terms of ethics and legalities in regards to a site like this, I would want to check ownership, get permission to detect, then turn the spoils over to the local historical society. Not likely anything of real value is there, but very well could be full of some just plain cool stuff.

There is a number of preserved farmstead/homesteads here in Wisconsin within state parks. I have asked permission to detect on the sites. Despite agreeing to turn all the spoils over, they said no However, their reasoning made sense. I was told in order to do something like that, Forest Dept needs to be onsite, and the site closed. That would prevent others in the public from getting the impression that this was OK. Also, for preservation purposes, you can't just detect and dig. The site has to be excavated just like an archaeological dig and everything has to be documented.

BUT - this location could be handled differently. If you have/have access to detecting gear, it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask!

The unethical approach would be to just do it, and fill your trunk with cannonballs. Still pretty cool, but it does screw others out of the wonder and amazement of a cool and historical site. Not to mention other obvious infractions and just the plain dick factor....

Yeah, that's what Im afraid of! If anyone owns it, its some hunting lease by some guys three hours away. I doubt they'd say yes, but hey, should be worth a shot and if I get around to it, I'll post what I find!

Is it posted? You're over thinking this unless your planning a mining operation.
The company dump is probably where the cool stuff is anyway. No metal detector needed with some careful observation and deduction you may find it within a half mile or so of the plant.
Ancient bottles on the ground surface is a dead giveaway.

All the property surrounding the place is heavily posted, new fencing and everything, but that area may not be owned. I'll head down there again sometime soon with this in mind.

Look for -old- roads and paths off them on satellite images.
Did it have a RR spur or track?
Look around that if so for other relics.

No RR, but it did have a path and a clearing where they made flat ground. Im sure something could have been dropped on the road. It can be a little hard to pick out the trail from the forest though.
