Hey everyone,

I will be moving to Georgia in October of this year so I am just saying hello. I have lived in California and Arizona previously and am currently living in South Korea. Anything specific I should know about exploring in east coast area? I look forward to meeting you guys.

Hola and welcome. Georgia is going to be a little different than what you are used to. A lot of your experience will depend on if you live inside or outside the city - but Atlanta in general doesn't have much to explore. Its all on the SE side and that's really Fin dangerous unless that's your thing.

There used to be a group that met up and explored, but I think its mostly disbanded. We are solo explorers when we stumble on something. I find my best luck is when I wander around up in the North GA mountains or go down to the more rural areas in the plains. Other than that, Atlanta doesn't leave much abandoned structures. This is the land of gentrification :-/

Anywho - I wish you much luck, who knows maybe the SE side is your bag, post pics of your adventures so I can live vicariously, my job keeps me pretty tied up and tired.

Hope you enjoy UER!

Thanks for the information. What is it exactly that makes the SE side so dangerous? Is it poor structural integrity?

Poverty, drugs, crime. You have to blend in and hide your gear.

Bankhead has permits all over the place to rebuild.

Production companies have swarmed the city for tax breaks and some urbex properties have connected with movie scouts, so security is up and hands are out.

A couple days ago I was at University and Pryor looking outside some warehouses. A homeless guy ran a script on me about 'having to pay or no shots', scary area and not because of the homeless guy, just the criminal vibe.

The railroad building near 5 points station is gutted and being renewed. Quite a few properties have been demolished: Milton Towers, Adair School is being renovated and the police and community presence is strong.

There is still an old school in English Avenue but it's a hazard waiting to happen. Nice place if you can pull it off. Don't look like money in this neighborhood.

The battery factory still has graffiti inside but not worth visiting.

Sylvan and Murphy is on lockdown, not worth seeing.

Pratt-Pullman Yard is dead.

The mansion and the asylum are worth a visit with permission, if you can get it. Being sneaky isn't recommended in this rich part of town.

There is one cool place remaining, and I have been four times. It's Fort Mcpherson. It's covered with security. You just have to blend in and look like you belong, a dumb tourist style should get you some pics.

There's the incinerator if you want to die and get pierced by rust and metal or fall thru the roof and get impaled by iron. There is an Argus plant nearby worth visiting on a Sunday.

There are incentives in the city to rebuild anything falling down.

Sadly, just plan on visiting krog street for graffiti and Oakland Cemetery for cool creep factor.

I went with the group to YDC once, don't know if it's still there doable these days, may have police training or a security guard.

The quarry isn't worth visiting unless you want to be arrested.

West end still has that urbex feel but it's true. Everything in Atlanta is blooming with economic growth. Real estate is money here, big time and everyone is cashing in.

Makes me sad, but atleast I captured some of the wonders before the gentrification wave hit hard.

I moved to portraits, animals, macro, and street........

Good Luck man. Welcome to Georgia, the foods good. That's my 2 cents.

Oh, I forgot, LOL, the Jail Farm is like Fort Knox now, LOL, I'm so glad i visited four times...but, she's done. LOL!! (.......try Birmingham!)

Thank you for the detailed write up. Hopefully the rapid gentrification doesn't ruin too much of whats left.

I just came back from Vacation in Georgia. Lots of abandoned places in small towns in the middle of nowhere. Lot of these small towns are pretty depressed. Economy and farming struggling. But lots to explore if you can get into these places! A must see is the Central State Hospital although forget about going inside. Security is high. But you can see alot from outside. Welcome to Georgia. Food is good, but everything is fried!
