I have a knock off go pro that I use to record my abandoned travels but the sound quality it awful and it doesn’t adjust to light well, does anyone have any suggestions for a good camera to take exploring?

Depends on budget and what you want to do with it. An iPhone 5 or up will have a fine camera, 7 or up with have a great camera. If you want low light then either spend some money on a nicer camera or spend some money (doesn't have to be much) on lights. If you're trying to do videos for something more creative then documentary then get an actual camera. Today's mirrorless cameras have great video along with pictures so that'll give you a good variety, but if you only want video and don't want to worry about lenses or settings then just get a camcorder.

Just remember, don't buy anything cheap because it's just a waste of money. Research whatever you're looking at to see if it's actually good.
Pm me if you need anymore help.

I would Completely agree with that advice, I use both DSLR and mirrorless, and would say that before you buy anything really look at exactly what you need. Even within the Sony lineup I ended up spending quite a while comparing image quality of both photos and videos between the series.
I would highly recommend the a6300, or a6500 for both video and photography on the cheaper side myself. I shoot nearly all my stills on an a6500 and for the price it is amazing!

Thank you I’ll keep that in mind when shopping, what are your thoughts on the new go pro 5? Is it worth buying or would it be better to just by an actual camera?

Ive heard some really good things about those cameras from multiple people now so I guess they would be good to look into, when buying the camera will it say if it’s mirrorless or not?

Unless you're gonna use a gopro for gopro things, then it would be better to get an actual camera. Gopros are designed to be the best for action sports, not day to day filming. They especially suck for photography but it seems like you aren't as worried about that. The hero 5 is pretty cheap right now and it's video is comparable to a camera of the same price, or better. I've got 2 hero 4s and a new original (not the original original) and I only use them for my biking stuff. The hero 4 is also comparable to the 5, but the 5 is easier to use. You can get good footage straight out of the 5 while the 4 will take a little work. The biggest downside to the gopro is the lens. It has a very wide lens (especially in superview) and is meant purely for action sports. You could probably use purely as a documentary camera just to wear while you explore. It gives a life like field of view, just without the clarity and resolution of the human eye. A regular camera could be used to simply document your explore as well but it would allow you to zoom in on stuff. It wouldn't be like a camera just strapped to you like the gopro. Even if you're holding the gopro and trying to get close ups on stuff, it will still seem like a gopro. The "gopro look" is something that people always try to avoid.
I personally use the sony a6500 which has great lowlight, video, and takes great pictures. The only problem is the price. $1000 for the body is probably more than you'd like to spend if you were looking at the hero 5. I'd say to just go to http://bhphotovideo.com and look around.
Good luck!
