Abandoned Nuclear Power Plant

Construction on this nuclear power plant began on November 10, 1977, by The Tennessee Valley Authority. The TVA board voted in August 1981 to cease construction due to forecasted power needs changing. Ten other plants' construction was canceled around the same time, disappointing families who had moved out of the area for the building. Construction has not yet been resumed, and the project is presumed to be canceled.

At its peak, 3,000 people worked to construct the plant which would have cost $2.95 billion, though TVA only invested $1.5 billion.

Yesterday, I had the (forced) privilege of exploring it, and honestly, it's one of the coolest places I've ever been. The whole experience was surreal; I've been looking at this place for years and seeing it in person was incredible.

If y'all want any more information on it or want to explore, hit me up @sarahlibman on Instagram!

How large was this place? I’m relatively bad at making out sizes from pictures but this place looks massive.

Were there any areas that you didn’t get to explore?

It was huge! I believe the tower is at least 100ft tall, but I'll have to do a little more research to get exact dimensions.
We went at night, but a lot of the structure is actually underground, so those parts we didn't go too far in because we just couldn't see. There's a solar power facility literally right next to it, so we played it cool with the lights.

It's way safer in the day. I would suggest a daytime explore, lots of "fall to your death" hazards.

Also, be super careful as that is a private prison right next door. I've been chased out there and it is serious shit. Like get arrested and have your cameras confiscated till your court date type of shit.

For places like this it's probably a lot safer to go in the day. Btw Calvin, this is a different one. There were a bunch that cancelled construction and this was one. I thought of the same place at first but I didn't think there was a solar place next to it.
So volkmared, try putting a little less details. History is great and makes it more interesting but don't be so exact with it. Btw, there's another explorable unfinished nuclear plant in Tennessee. 4 reactor buildings and one even has the core. It's massive.

Pretty cool place, it indeed looks massive! Interesting (and colorful equipment in pic 19...honestly, I'm not sure what it does specifically, but I had a boss who owned one; it does something involving hay, I believe.
Thanks for sharing, looks like a sweet adventure!

The people who own that tractor are pretty nice. The TVA people and prison people aren't.

+1 on the daytime explore. Maybe predawn it to be safe on entry. But that place has sketchy stairs and big holes. Great job grabbing a chance!
