Today I deploy two rafts to explore an underground tunnel network used primarily to divert a major creek deep underground!

I caught a case of moderate hypothermia due to the fact that I was soaked, and was experience 21 degree weather (which isn't that cold, but my clothes were so wet it led to moderate (stage 2) hypothermia.

Dude! That's a dope ass tunnel!! Bigger the chambers the better! For real though, a pair of rubber boots are so worth it you should get some. Do you know anything more about Derek and Patti? That was pretty sad.

Dude, you could totally have avoided that hypothermia by wearing rubber boots or hip waders.

But I'm guessing the video wouldn't have been dramatic enough without an element of danger such as hypothermia in a boring concrete tunnel.

Also, it wasn't the best idea to go alone, even though you say you know that drain pretty well. It is always better to have someone with you down there, just in case. You might not have a second chance at life if you drown down there.

Also, this:

That looks like it could have easily been navigated by knee high waders for the most part, though it did appear to get deeper in some parts. Still, there wasn't much need for a raft from what I could see, much less two.

Still, it was foolish to enter that drain unprepared for the weather. Wearing waders and bringing those body handwarmers would be all that you'd need to prevent hypothermia. Bringing a partner would be even better. But best of all would be to wait until warmer weather.

There's a reason many explorers slow down in the winter- winter is the hardest season to explore in, because you must contend with intense cold, leaving footprints in the snow, icy ladders, and snow obscuring potential hazards. The moment you suspected hypothermia was an issue you should have turned back and tried again in a few months. That drain isn't going anywhere.

But where is the drama and catchy click-bait in that??

Thanks! hahaha I'm guessing the Derek and Patti story was purely a joke. I haven't heard of anyone perishing in those tunnels. I was afraid the water levels were going to be so high that my boots would just fill up with water. I've used rubber boots and waders in the past when the only way into an abandoned school was through the flooded basement.

I thought the water levels would be such that the waders and boots would turn into a hazard in themselves from filling up with water, and dragging me down. I thought my friends were coming with, but once they felt how cold the water was, they decided not to go. And yes, my videos cut against the grain in this section of the community. However, I just put those jokes in the video. It ads a bit of entertainment to the explore.

The moment you suspected hypothermia was an issue you should have turned back and tried again in a few months. That drain isn't going anywhere.

Those tunnels could have mostly been navigated without the use of the rafts, however, rafting through the tunnel saved a lot of time. There was one section where I’m pretty sure the waders would fill up with water, which is why I decided not to bring them.

And I agree that exploring in winter is generally unsafe, but I actually enjoy exploring in adverse conditions. It’s more challenging physically and mentally. I think its fun to face the elements, for me it brings a sense of accomplishment. By the time I was experiencing mild hypothermia symptoms, I had already hit the point of no return. It would have taken more time to go back. And I wanted to see if I could push through the pain and get to the end.

haha I always bring my own boats! I’ve lost about 5 rafts this year on adventures. I’ll have to buy more for next exploring season.

I still love this music, but it doesn't rock!

There are fun things that you can do in drains that don't involve boats or walking ;)

Thats why I made an advisory to people who would want to try this at the end of my video.

You're assuming a teenager is going to watch the entire video.
Warnings traditionally come at the beginning for a reason. Injury and death aren't reversible, a video is.

Great BH - that image - Now I can't stop hearing the "GHOSTBUSTERS!" theme song. Watch out for the pink slime in those tunnels or you will find yourself transported "Back in Time" to the 80's.
