Climbing Barbed Wire Fences

I know that there was a whole thread about this already but it covered so much that it wasn't specific with anything.

Without using crampons or gloves or anything at all, whats the easiest way to climb these fences? I know that I can just go to where a gate is and climb it like a ladder or go to where the wire is down but in an emergency what would I do? For example, if I'm being chased by security and can't choose where I cross the fence or If I need to go as fast as I can into the site to avoid being seen. Is it safe to use the wire as an aid to climb? Do I climb it like a normal fence and just straddle the top? I tried testing some things on a fence while out riding my bike but got bored and left.

I've somehow never encountered a fence that I needed to go OVER, only under. I know that some of you veterans will have a thousand ways to get over one so give me everything you know.

Throwing a thick rug, carpet, mat, blanket, or piece of cardboard over the top makes it a lot easier to go over without getting cut, or stuck, or having to destroy any part of the fence. This can be carried in a roll to ease transport, and then just take it down when you're safely over. You might not want to carry something like that around, but it's often one of the only quick, safe ways over, so bring it if you know you'll need it.

If you don't want to carry a physical barrier with you, you can try finding a corner, or an area where two sections meet. Those are often easier to climb over like a ladder, depending on the exact design, but it's more risky. If you're in a hurry though?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We gotta a nice thick one in the back of my friends truck in case we encounter barbed wire. Make sure if its a place with patrol/security to take it down and kinda hide it nearby so they don't see it.

I am borderline too old to climb fences, especially with barbed wire. It would have to be something pretty damn special for me to still do it. But, I used to wear an old leather jacket on explores for that purpose. What was nice about the leather is it doesn't snag nearly as easily as fabric might, especially on razor wire....

Presumably to use the carpet trick, you'd need to use a ladder to get up there and get over the overhang, if the fence leans that way.

Climbing over a barbwire fence isn't a good idea. I prefer climbing around the side, or crawling under. Most fences I've seen, even US military fences, have exploits, if you make it around the perimeter first.

Trying to rush over a fence is a great way to get seriously injured.
Even chain link can rip you up bad.
Gates are the best place to breach it.
Corner posts in a pinch.
As Steed stated under is good option if doable although I rarely do this.
Remember you can still get impaled on the chain link going under the fence!
And I do mean impaled...

Getting tangled in razor wire can be fatal, don't.
Protect your balls and your inner thighs/arms with any type of security wire.
Never attempt to scale a structurally unstable fence even just chain link.
You better have excellent upper body strength; be able to do chin ups and dips for reps.

One slip is all it takes.

Going under the fence is my usual technique but I've still been sliced up by the chain link. I've been doing some more secure places lately so hopefully I can put all of this into use. I'll do almost anything to avoid razor wire but I've still considered option for it. I currently only pack for photography but I'm realizing more and more that I should probably bring some things to aid me in various ways. After getting stuck on a roof I'll almost always have rope with me as well so I might as well make a kit full of stuff like that. I'm planning a sunrise tower climb soon so hopefully I can put this all to use. I've got a friend who lives right next to it and he's done it a few times so hopefully he'll be able to help me if needed. Hopefully I won't tho haha. Again, thanks for all of the help.

The gate is doable by brute force if you're fit.
A tree or pole by fence pole.
If you read the already pinned thread on fences you will find more.
Say it once, why say it again... use the search feature and/or read threads here.

Here's a tear I got in a thick glove from climbing around the side of a barbwire fence. It tore right through the outer layer as I was jumping away and I was lucky it didn't catch more.

I've learned the hard way to take care scaling fences.
One time I used a tree to help scale a waist high barbed wire fence on farmland.
When I planted my hand on the back side of the tree my palm was impaled by a 5/8 inch or so thorn.
I literally had to pull my hand off it.
It went in between the tendons...

Don't panic if you get hung up, but swift, correct and decisive action is needed before your anaerobic endurance fades...
Got hung up on a rickety 6 foot chain link fence.
My bad; should have never tried to scale in that condition on a straight stretch even using the fence post.
Got a twist pair of chain link wires stuck in my pant crotch. After over a minute of trying to free my pants with the wires next to my nuts, I threw myself off vertically/rolled and landed with a thud in the weeds on my back.
Destroyed the pants including a rip down the inside inseam from the crotch.
Too damn close to my nuts and femoral artery.
Luckily... no blood.

I'm no expert, but from what I understand barbed wire is not especially dangerous? (not razor wire)
Unless it cuts a major artery, a bit of blood if you are escaping security shouldn't be a problem.

Anyways, when I climb barbed wire fences I usually move quickly and just sling myself over as if it was a normal fence. As I said, I'm not an expert, so it would be helpful if someone more experienced corrected me before I get seriously hurt.

Barbwire is made worse by the pressure your body puts on it and the precariousness of your position.

Lol, if it's quick you better be damn sure it's with no contact with the barbs.
I'm in no hurry...
Tangling with it will cost you something.
Muscle/tendon/cartilage/ligament damage and bleeders are possible.

"Movement against barbed wire can result in moderate to severe injuries to the skin and, depending on body area and barbed wire configuration, possibly to the underlying tissue. Humans can manage not to injure themselves excessively when dealing with barbed wire as long as they are cautious. Restriction of movement, appropriate clothing, and slow movement when close to barbed wire aid in reducing injury."

Lol.
Exactly.
Add to that speed.
The more speed the less control of the damage you have.
With near your full body weight the damage can be severe.
A chain link fence can shred you proper if you get hung up on it... don't.

The best defense is to not be in a situation that requires you to climb directly over barbed wire in the first place. Memorize all potential exploits on the fence (gates, places to slip under, corner posts, etc). Then do everything possible to not be seen in the first place, including backing off and coming back another day if it looks too risky.

I personally tend to lean to the cautious side when it comes to these things. I've passed on riskier propositions before and pulled the plug on an exploration that started to look a bit too dicey- but as a consequence I've never had a floor collapse on me, never gotten trapped somewhere, and I've only been caught once in nearly five years.

I understand the thrill of danger, the appeal of rolling the dice and winning against the odds- I feel it too. But you gotta temper it with a realistic dose of caution, or eventually you'll find yourself in a situation you can't get out of. I learned that one the hard way early on.

This is very situational but I used to work on a cattle farm. We raised a couple dozen head of rodeo cattle and futurity bulls. Some of those bastards were mean too. To hell with running from security, running from bulls is enough to make you roll over a barbwire fence like it's a nothing. I used to have a Carhartt coat and overalls I wore when it was winter, and those were thick enough to let me roll though about anything without getting cut up.

That being said, when I worked in the summer I usually wore jeans and a cut off. If I got charged then you could bet your ass I was getting cut up and probably ripping holes in my shirt. Once you work around barbed wire fences for so long you start to realize most circular set and three line wires have a barb every 6-8 inches. That's if it's the cheap stuff anyway. But since there are gaps with no barbs you can grab them and pull a three line together or push a circular down. AND EVEN KNOWING THIS I GOT CUT DODGING CHARGING BULLS.

Most people don't know that though, and if you try to just "sling themselves over it" while wearing a t-shirt and jeans, you're gonna get cut, usually pretty damn badly too. If you're not that graceful with your "slinging", there's a chance you throw yourself right onto the barbs, and like Steed said, it's all about pressure. If you've got two dozen barbs under you and you're pressing your full bodyweight on it of course you're going to get cut, and probably worse.

TL;DR: Wearing thick cloths can sometimes help you get over barbed wire. Look for gaps in barbs and pull the wires down or together for getting over, but I do not recommend trying to do this while running from someone or something.

Hell No!!!

The femoral artery is right there on either side on the inside thigh. It's not all that deep in the tissue; barbed wire could potentially reach it.
A puncture wound to it will almost always prove fatal; you can bled out in 6 minutes but you'll be incapacitated in about 2-3 minutes.
Very hard to stop a bleeder from it especially near the groin. Add to that there's a major blood supply to the groin and that's in range as well.
If you get hung up, hanging trauma can kill you.
Tendons can also be damaged; many aren't that deep either. A ruptured tendon is nasty.

Any chain link and/or barbed/razor wire fence can shred you proper... don't learn this the hard way!!!

Another possibility is to look for trees or something similar along the fence line. I've found it much easier on many occasions to avoid most of the fence by simply using the tree or whatever to help me avoid the barbed wire.
