1920's catholic orphanage (pic heavy)

This orphanage was built in 1925 to care for boys aged 6 to 16. it was one of the first orphanages that steeped away from institutionalized care, and went towards a more family based cottage plan. there where twelve cottages built first. along with a school, gymnasium, pool, dining hall, administrative building, and convent. meaning the kids almost never had to leave the campus. the fist kids came from two nearby orphanages that where shutting down. the sisters then came to this orphanage to serve as teachers and house mothers. in 1947, more cottages were built to allow girls into the orphanage. in its peak, there were 40 kids and one nun in each cottage. in 1980, the population of the orphanage started to decrease, so they started focusing on special needs children. in the 80's and 90's the eating hall, gym, and pool were demolished so they can build more modern buildings on that side of the campus. in 2009, a more modern building on the campus opened and also treated children. in 2014, the orphanage closed. there where only 14 housed, while it had the capacity of 80. but like most catholic orphanages of the era, it was not a happy place. abuse was rampant through out its entire existence. he is a quote from a female who stayed in the 60's. "Sister would make me sick at breakfast, where our dining rooms were was a seperate building. She would beat me with her fists, kick me with those horrid black shoes they wore and then when we got back to the cottage she would tell the other girls, since I was such a terrible person and had ruined everyones' day, they were allowed to beat me with what ever they could find... fists, shoes, kick, pull hair and when they were finished, she'd have them strip me naked. She would then have them drag me upstairs to the dorms, where she would ask for volunteers to hold me down, one at each arm and leg, so four other girls. She would then have another one get her "stick". She proceeded to beat me so bad, I'd have bruises all over my body. Then she would take me down to the playroom and make me stand holding my ankles in front of a full length mirror until it was time to go to school, approx. an hour. The interesting thing, I was sent to (blank) because my Mother was an alcoholic, although back then, I was 7, I thought it was my fault. Sister Myra always said I could never tell anyone, because it would be worse before someone could help me. There were so very few days that this didn't happen. Every night before I went to bed, she would tell me how much she Loved me". in 2009, a girl in cottage 14 was arguing about headphones, so two adults meant to take care of them held her down on her stomach for two hours. she had told them she couldn't breathe, but they said that if she could talk, she could breathe. they only thought to check up on her when she turned blue. she had vomited and had no way to get it out of her away way. she passed away. the two people were brought to court, but ruled not guilty. the final straw came in 2013, when a one of the workers was found to be in a sexual relationship with a 13 year old. the state then put the entire facility on probation. it closed the next year. as i was exploring, i could only think of the sadness and abuse that once took place. i was glad i got to see the place, but i also glad its not in use anymore. it is now in the middle of demolition, and will be parkland.

1. all of the cottages on the left side were demolished when were were there in december.

and now for the modern ones

This is the main administration building that was built 30 years after everything else was. we didn't spend much time here, as there were motion detectors everywhere, and we got cold feet.

Nice work. Jealous!

Thank you. It was definitely fun, if not a little thrilling.

Nice work. Jealous!

I actually didn't expect this place to be as impressive as it was. there was certainly too much left behind.

Beautiful buildings. I wonder why they sprang for motion detectors on the admin building, but not the rest?

I may need to get out there before the rest of the demo.

there where motion detectors all through out the buildings, but were most prominent in the admin building. you can actually see one in the 5th pic. in the church, there was a motion detector that was ripped apart and it had a sticker that said it was installed in 2012. i think they're dead at this point. you may be out of luck on the cottages, but they said it maybe several years before they get to the bigger ones.

Wow. Beautiful building with some neat features. Ive heard some not so great stories about the catholic schools and reformatories. Love the historic pictures you added for comparison
