LadderShields/gates?

There is a water tower I want to climb with a friend, getting over the fence wasn’t an issue but there is a gate/shield over the ladder that is padlocked. We don’t want to break the lock as that will probably result in increased security measures in the future or otherwise make things harder/riskier. The water tower location is in the middle of nowhere on a hard to reach and use access trail so noise is not an issue. What is the best way of bypassing the gate/shield and accessing the ladder without breaking anything?

The picture is similar to the one on the tower but the shield covers the bottommost tower rung as well

The link dont work.

As for bypassing it without breaking the lock? Climbing around it is your only option. Theres not much you can do to bypass something like that unless you can conjure magic

Try this link

Me and my friend might be able to climb around but the chick I wanna take there probably cant. I’m just trying to find a workaround to this

If there's sufficient room between the ladder and a wall, sometimes they don't cover the back so you can just climb the backside. Other times, you'll have to grip the sides of the ladder with both hands and feet and shimmy your way up.

You could always find some nearby items (dumpsters, trash cans, wooden pallets) to stand on- or you could just have someone step on your hands/knees and boost them up.

Most of these have the limitation that you need to be able to do at least a couple pullups, but upper body strength is an integral part of climbing, so there's no avoiding that.

Honestly wish I had thought to take a picture while I was scouting it because its hard to explain, but yeah I might be able to climb around it if I can hug the pole and kinda scoot up but the gate is very tight against the pole, and I think I might be able to squeeze my foot in it but i’m not sure, and the girl I want to bring there probably wont be able to either. The location is in the middle of the woods so theres really nothing we can move, we were discussing driving the jeep up to the base and getting onto the ladder but that would involve cutting the padlock on the entrance gate which were trying to avoid doing. Its not the pullups part that is difficult, but theres nothing really to hold to do pullups on.

I appreciate the ideas and suggestions though and will have to give them a try when its dry.

If it's in the middle of the woods with nobody nearby who could spot you, you could always just carry a step ladder or something to it. If it's secluded enough that driving up to the base is a viable option, a stepladder would be easier still- and without leaving a trace of your presence like a cut lock would.

I used to climb around on the water tanks in my town. We would find a fallen tree limb to prop against the ladder so we could climb the branch to reach the ladder.

It would be a bit of a hassle to get it over the fence but I think both of those could work. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well bois we did it. I stood on my friends shoulders and used an adjustable wrench to get off the nut that held the eye-bolt the padlock was attached to to the ladder gate, that made it possible to open the gate. 5 of us climbed up carefully and had a blast taking pictures and just chilling at the top. Then we climbed down I got back on my friends shoulders and put the nut back in so the gate was once again closed and there was no evidence of us ever being there at all. I appreciate the help and advice. Im proud to say I conquered the laddergate!

Congrats! I think I speak for us all when I say we'd definitely be interested in seeing the pictures. Glad to hear you made it.

That's awesome! Can anyone recommend a different way to get up onto ladders besides climbing onto people's shoulders? There's a water tower near me whose ladder is way too high up for that to happen. Unless we stack three people.

I would not advise climbing a water tower. Prancing around utilities is a sure-fire way to get the attention of people other then the local cops.

I always avoid ones out in the open; this one is in the woods and I've checked for surveillance. I still get that it can be a huge deal if you're caught, though. I have a bail plan just in case someone's way out there for whatever reason.

I would post a pic but it wont let me post one larger then 100kb

Yeah I was kinda surprised I only had to loosen one bolt with the wrench to open the whole gate, but I guess it serves as more of a deterrent.

Sorry i’m not sure what we would have done if we had to stack people just to reach the ladder, probably have just given up and found a different tower or tried using ropes.

I’m doing this from my phone so flash doesnt work, didn’t think to post them to a third party site, here they are. If it doesn’t work ill post them to imgur but I didn’t want to bother making an account.
First pic is me getting the bolt off, second is me climbing third is the view from the top

This picture shows the eye bolt, the padlock goes through a loop which goes through a slit onto the outside of the gate, in the picture you can see the bolt that goes theough the metal V securing the lock to the tower.
