What a shame...

There's an unnamed nuclear power plant close to where I live. It used to be in pristine condition. Due to publicity (from mostly YouTube), now there are papers scattered all over the floor, things broken, and graffiti everywhere. I'm disheartened by it.

The video was made two years ago by a pair of urbexers who I respect. They never gave out the location, nor did they show the POE. But unfortunately, commenters found out the location. And now the place is trashed. Although I've never actually been in the plant myself (almost got caught by security), it's a shame to see how trashed it is in the new videos posted to YouTube.

[bleep]? Anyway, it's a shame the location was trashed. Not trying to advocate giving out locations or anything, but most big sites get quickly trashed anyway, unless they're very well hidden. If the commenters were able to find the location, then it was either already publicly available somewhere, it was easy enough to Google or someone who doesn't abide by the UE rules (graffiti guys, scrappers) already knew the place.

The plant was actually closed in 1994, but unfortunately, it began to get trashed only after the release of the video. Oh well. I guess it's inevitable.

Keep it under wraps until it's demoed or repurposed, otherwise it will get destroyed.

I also cannot deny the fact that making videos about these locations kind of bring more attention to them... So the best way to preserve a location is to never make a video of it in the first place. But given that it's their career... I don't know man.

The place you are talking about never stood a chance. YouTube video or not, everyone who went there would post the place, mention it was an abandoned nuke plant, and then post other stuff that is in the immediate area. It took me 2 minutes to figure out and that was long before any video.

Michael from The Proper People here. I just wanted to say that a lot went into our decision to post the video when we did and what we included in the video. Firstly, there were already multiple videos on YouTube of the power plant that predated ours, with a significant number of views. Here is one: https://www.youtub...atch?v=BmKpOhYHFS4 and there was another by the channel RNK all day, who showed their entire approach and POE in broad daylight. That vid is deleted from their channel now. We also knew that another BIG YouTuber (over 1 million subs at the time) was planning on filming the location in the immediate future. Hence that's how we came to the decision to post the video when we did rather than sit on it. Also, after we posted our video, we had locals telling us it was in a lot worse shape in our video than it was just a few weeks/months prior, so it was already heading downhill. In addition, we also blacklist the names of locations and the cities they are in from our comments so it's impossible to namedrop most places on our channel without typing them in a way to avoid the filter. And of course nobody knows about the filter so they don't do this. And even when a comment does get through the filter, we manually go through them and delete them anyway.

You made the right call for sure. Especially if that RNK clown posted it too.

Yeah I don't remember who's vid I saw first on that site, Might have been TPP, not sure. I think it WAS the first one up and I remember they did a decent job of covering all the big red flags but 10 min of google foo resulted in a location confirmation. I distinctly remember thinking "This is super cool! Damn now it won't last a year..."

Huge shame about the control room

I remember his video started with him calling a girl a bitch because she wouldn't give him the location when he asked for it. Like you've got to be really dense to be a YouTuber and not be able to comprehend why someone wouldn't want to hand you a location, and then go call them a bitch for it.

why is it so hard to find good urban exploration channels? i only have like two i actively watch because they seem to actually care about preservation, and making it about the building and not them selves.

We're gonna get there. We don't need a whereabouts.

Michael,

I just want to say I'm honored to talk to you. You guys are the only urbex channel that I watch have a ton of respect for. I look forward to seeing your new videos every couple weeks and you guy are the main reason why I got into this hobby!

But just so you know, I'm totally not blaming it on you. I know that you guys hid the details on purpose and you do your best to moderate everything (like always). What I didn't know is that the location was already in despair before you guys visited. So I apologize for writing that. I also didn't know that other channels posted the location, due to the fact that (as you said) their videos were taken down.

I totally respect your decision to post the video, but I just wish commenters wouldn't go out and publicize locations. Please don't take this as criticism to you or your channel. That's not what I meant to do.

Feel free to PM me if you're ever on the island again for a few locations.

- Joseph

Urban exploration becoming popular was not the best thing because now everybody can just go and wreck a site or spray graffiti.

People need to stop with the "it was already posted, so it doesn't matter if i post it" argument. Any added attention a location gets can only help further its destruction, no matter how bad it already is. The more exploring videos that get posted, especially by larger channels, the more other people think it's ok to do the same and things snowball. Set a good example. Wait until after demo or renovation (or better yet, just delete your youtube account).
