I rarely post here, but I'm seeing way more toxicity in this thread than I have EVER seen with MSP urbexers on Instagram. Part of why I started getting into Instagram is because of the rudeness I see in threads like this. Take a good long hard look at yourselves in the mirror, folks. In fact, the only person I've had a beef with on Instagram also posts on this site. But I haven't met him in person so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since people say he is only a jerk online but fine in person...

Some of the Instagram peeps are way more reckless than I care for. BUT I have actually gone exploring with some of them and I chalk up the "recklessness" to youthfulness. I learned my lesson the hard way once, and they probably will too. I've established myself as somewhat of a "Ted Mosby" among that crew and they actually are interested in hearing the history of these locations or what about their architecture makes them unique.

In regards to EricAndMyles, I actually had the opportunity to meet and explore with Eric. Really nice guy who has quite the talent for photography and videography. I don't think ya'll are being fair to him. Sure, criticize some of his shots or whatever -- but the whole bit about their ages/living with parents/etc, just stop. Saying things like that doesn't make him look bad; it makes YOU look bad.

You obviously haven't been paying much attention then. I think the OP got the answers he was looking for and was treated with about the right level of respect. Seen much worse on this site, as w0nKa alluded.

Perhaps not; until recently I didn't document my explores on Instagram so perhaps I missed something that happened prior, or else most of the MSP instagram urbexers I follow and have explored with are pretty chill (if not somewhat reckless).

Ya know...

Sometimes you try and write a thoughtful, honest, and straightforward post in a thread, and you get an offended reaction anyways.

Why did you feel the need to start documenting your explores on instagram? I mean, if you weren't documenting and publishing photos previously, what made you start? Seems to be the opposite trajectory most long-time explorers go. Is that how people in the instagram earn social currency?

Fuck it, let's go to snark town.

Yer mom took it long and hard in the mirror last night.

Seriously though, are you saying you got into instagram as a reaction to rude comments you received on UER? That's pretty sad, on multiple levels. If you had to flock to instagram because the serious community was too difficult, you might want to look in that mirror yourself.

Who is casey1112? 14+ years on UER but virtually unknown to the local community? Oh wait, he's the instagram Ted Mosby. My bad. We've got internet royalty among us here!

Okay, I'll stop with all the rudeness. Workday coffee rage is a helluva drug.

Comments like this make you more a more serious explorer than the "Instagummers", amiright?

I never received any rude comments on here until this thread, because I honestly didn't have much interest in wading into the quagmire. The only reason I am posting here now is because SOMEONE needs to call out the hypocritical toxic attitudes on this board and the downright awful attitudes and pre-conceived notions of people you have never met. Heck, I've seen some vaguely threatening posts made towards Eric And Myles on their videos.

I started posting on Instagram because my non-urbex friends liked to make fun of my love of architecture and history, so I wanted them to see what I see and why I think some of these bandos should be restored rather than demolished. But by making those posts for my non-urbex friends, it started attracting Instagram urbexers in the area, so I started linking up with some of them because they were friendly. I did mostly solo exploring until fairly recently. Believe it or not, over the past 14 years I have run into local urbexers who do not post here OR on Instagram; I've just happened to run into people at some of the same locations. Guess none of us count as "serious" because we don't bother posting snarky and rude comments on this board.

Sorry not sorry I didn't feel the need to post here for most of the past 14 years.

I don't consider myself royalty. I've always had a major interest in architecture, history, and city planning since I saw "Lost Twin Cities" as a kid, and urbex is just a natural extension of that. My non-urbexing friends nicknamed me "Schmosby" because I was always yakking about architecture and local developments.

But meanwhile some of you call YOURSELVES "elite" and "serious". Such humble people... So many people on this board sure have egos that far outstrips that of the "Instagummers".

Casey, you should stop now before making yourself look like bigger idiot. I'm not sure why you're on here acting like some kind of exploring jesus who needs to set everyone straight.
Nihl got an appropriate response for what it was, look at any new comers thread, there are far worse.

It seems like you are trying to criticize and argue an exploring community that you aren't apart of, you have next to no posts except for this, and everything else we're supposed to just believe because you say it's true. (referring to your presence on the uer community, not exploring as a whole)

go back and read clockworks response without the mentality that you're being attacked.

I wish both you and Nihl better exploring adventures.

You know what ticked me off? The immature attacks on Eric and Myles, and others I know through Instagram.

I don't consider myself some urbexing Jesus, far from it. But when I see friends and people whom I trust being unjustifiably attacked, then I'm going call that behavior out. Middle school girls gossip about other people. Not adults who are passionate about their hobby.

I know there's way worse threads here. And that's a problem. You have no idea how this board looks to urbexers who don't post here, but the negativity has been noted by people way beyond myself. If you want a true MSP urbex community, then don't act like a clique. If you don't like something that someone is doing, then have some constructive criticism and tell it to their face or in a DM instead of attacking people on an anonymous message board and leaving threatening and cowardly comments on YouTube videos.

There is a new generation of urbexers coming up, and Instagram and YouTube are the tools of choice to share these adventures. You can either meet up with them and educate them on your values and the urbex principles put forth by Ninjalicious, or you can sit there gossiping and bellyaching about them while changing NOTHING.

I like positivity, and there is a serious lack of that here; it keeps far more people from participating on this board than you may realize.

I can see you really look up to those 15 year olds. Really good role models for exploring, and also for the preservation of cave creature wildlife.

I choose not to explore with people who think it's funny to blow clouds of vape smoke into hibernating bats faces. But it doesn't matter, they seem like really great guys.

It's pretty simple. If you say or do stupid stuff, you're probably going to be met with a harsh response. One option is learning from it, maybe message some folks, meetup, and get involved with a community that does some pretty amazing things. The ones who do this usually end up finding out that the people in the community are much friendlier than they appear online. The other option is you can dismiss the advice you were given, stomp you feet, and go hang out with the reckless instagram crowd. It seems most people these days aren't willing to put in the effort for the former. I think I've only ever gotten one message from someone on uer actually wanting to meetup. I ended up going on an amazing 5 day exploring to to nola with that person.

We have all done stupid stuff at some point in our life. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and am usually willing to give people second chances. With that said, on the rare occasion I venture over to see what's new on the Eric & Miles channel, I find that they always seem to have gone further down the hole of dumbfuckery. Kids who blow vape smoke on hibernating bats and who purposefully take large groups to rooftops and try to get caught by security are not the type of people I ever want to hang out with or want spreading that type of behavior around the exploring scene. It blows me away that anyone would try to defend them.

This is pretty much the same solution that gets repeated ad infinitum, and yet I too have never had a single person direct message me asking to get involved or go out exploring. I suspect I am one of many.

As I've said before. People want handouts, and nothing more from you.

The nicotine ramps up the bat's metabolism at the least.
The bat's walk a very fine line when hibernating and always run the risk of running out of energy.
If that happens they die.
The nicotine is excreted in urine. It stays in their systems even longer than if they're awake more than likely. If forced to break hibernation drink because of this ingested toxin they waste vast amounts of energy.
It stresses them in an already stressful period when they are most vulnerable.
Even in small amounts nicotine can be highly toxic to small mammals.

In conclusion if they did this...
these guys are real fucking assholes that deserve what they get.

Huh, I guess that's why it falls onto the ground after that happens.

But don't take my word for it, it's proudly displayed on their public youtube channel.

At 20 years old I'm younger than most on this board, and I started exploring at 16- the same age as these kids. But I did things right. I took my three day grace period after registering and lurked through old threads before posting. I learned not to ask for handouts and to be discreet with information before I made my first post. I realized that if I'm in Rome I should do as the Romans do.

As a result, I've had a good experience with UER. I wasn't mocked or excluded, because I took the time to learn the do's and don'ts of this community before jumping in. So while I do understand the "good ol' boys" club perspective of UER, I can't sympathize. It's easy to become a community member in good standing if you respect the locations, be discreet, and participate in discussions. The community can be unforgiving towards newbies who blunder, but considering that all the information they need to not screw up is stickied in the Rookies section, the fact that they screw up anyway means they didn't bother to put in the bare minimum effort to learn.
