New to the MSP communtiy but not new to MSP urbex - Anyone kind enough to catch me up to speed?

Hey there everyone! Like the title says, I'm new to the community but not to the hobby it's based around. I've been exploring now for about a year (which I'm sure doesn't sound like much to all the veterans on here) and doing online research for even longer than that. I've developed a knack for finding locations through cross-referencing photos and videos with google earth, and I'm actually rather proud of the fact that all the locations I know of are from my own independent research and experience, and not from asking people about them.

That being said, I've kinda run into a wall. While I do encounter other people occasionally, I've never really made serious friends with anyone so as to be able to sort of naturally worm my way into the community. From what little I have seen, it appears that I unfortunately have to actually interact with other people in order to find out more (I'm kidding of course, I'm not actually THAT antisocial).

So here I am! If any of you do trust me, I'd very much appreciate being (as the title says) brought up to speed on all things related to the MSP community! I understand that much of it might be sensitive information, so of course feel free to pm me or arrange to meet up with me in person (from what I've read on the forum, that's the best way to get to know you folks, in-person and all). Though to beg for free information even more, What's the latest happenings? Who are the most important community figures (not just online but irl as well)? Is there any drama there (I'm only familiar with Brick v. AS)? Are there any important traditions/policies/concepts observed in the community (aside from safety measures)? Any local slang or terminology? Not really a question, but Teh Quarry amiright XD!!1!??!?

Anyways, to complete the stereotypical "noob's first post", I've included the link to an imgur album full of pictures from all the places I've been to. I tried to make it more unique though by having the pictures only be of specific items/features that exist exclusively in that location, instead of being super huge shots that give away the location right away. The pictures at the end of the album are just general shots of "cool stuff".

Welcome to UER. I personally care more about the quality of an explorer rather than how long you've been in the hobby. but with time comes skill, I wish you luck good and safe travels. I'm glad to see an explorer who at least seems like he researches locations other than being the guy who asks his cool buddy paul about some cool place to go ruin.

I hear ya on that. I like to research all the places I have been, or going to. For me one of the joys of exploring is know about the building, it history. I am kinda a history buff so that might be it. i also love to dig around websites and library's looking stuff up.. I know I am weird, just like the rest of us.

Welcome! Theres never a wall, work around it. Look up through historical archives and then figure out what happened in and around that area, you should be able to poke around enough and with a bit of luck find even more spots. Keep it d/l and enjoy We're around, we'll find you.

Whoa whoa whoa partner. Please understand that is a lot of information to divulge to someone nobody knows all that well. Most people are going to feel uneasy about this part of your post, especially considering the msp community has had an fbi informant amongst them in the past.

Other than that you seem to be more or less on the right track. If you're stuck, remember there's much more to explore than what you can find from looking at photos of places other explorers have posted online. Hit some archives, learn some local history, keep up with the news, and just go out and wander around as often as you can.

Haven't heard about the FBI informant part before, but it wouldn't surprise me. Not to seem unfriendly, but questions like that are giving me vibes that feel strongly of either cops or reporters, and neither is a good thing. OP, if you're an actual explorer, you're coming on way too strong, and sorry if I seem unfriendly. But if OP is trying to "infiltrate the infiltrators" or something like that, don't bother. We're hobbyists, not some super secret society.

Well put, NotQuiteHuman.
Trust is earned; it takes time.
It was years before I met anyone from here.
There are people here that I've interacted with for years that be fun to get together with a very low risk of unpleasant surprises.
Much that trust was built through PMs.

Asking for too much, too soon raises the index of suspicion. Many here have much less risky options because they have put in the time/effort to be in that position. Reward vs risk.

You be far better off posting pic threads of your explores, reading as many posts here as possible, learning the culture of this site and it's members. In short you should be yourself, do the leg work, contribute and the rest will follow in due course if members like you.
Note: no one likes a sloppy ax murderer.
For all you know we might all be sloppy ax murderers...

With how MSP is going lately, I'm not surprised you can find entrances based on people's videos. There's a bunch of wannabe famous kids that are trying to compensate for their dissatisfaction of living with their parents as high school graduates. Or maybe that's just Eric and Myles.

What drives you to go to these places? The answer to that would direct you to one of two places. Either to a (now semi-dormant) group of explorers that focus on research and the technical aspects of entry, who are also admittedly probably difficult to meet up with on a regular basis... or Instagram, where you will find the most people who go to spots in MSP, and where people are mostly interested in fake internet fame and posting a billion photos with every caption either a mumble rap lyric or a rant about how people post too many photos.

Welcome

The community on instagram is bloody awful, I've ran into a few vets on there and all they do is give some of the most sensitive spots out of pretty much nothing. I stay away from that toxic community.

and smurf, you mean to tell me you don't like classics such as "Exploring Candyman Caves! (FOUND GUN)"
or the multiple times they've exposed more sensitive locations.. don't really want to say what, and give it more attention.

((So I guess I'll start replying to you guys' posts now, one-by-one or whatever))

Look, I totally get the trust thing. That's what I meant to start the very groundwork for with the super specific imgur album. I know it's gonna take a lot more imgur albums to establish myself here, but just saying, I'm trying. This is only my first post. Believe me, I have many more planned. This isn't just a one-off thing.

In regards to the FBI thing, that's honestly what I meant by get me up to speed! (and for those that are curious about me being a super-secret agent or something, all I can say is that I'm really not, and you just have to take my word for it; nothing other than that that I can really do.) Like for real, all I want is to be brought up to speed with the happenings and such. I'm just not a fan of being left in the dark! And I'm super sorry if I'm being too direct, but understand that this is exactly what I would ask anyone else about, online or otherwise, if I had the chance to. No point in not being honest, imo, and I wouldn't be posting here if I already got the answers to my questions somewhere else.

Now I originally typed out a full rant on this because a couple of you suggested this like I hadn't been trying. But, in short, please say something, anything, more specific then just "look into the archives". Again, condensed rant form: Bitch where? Online archives? Physical archives? In a museum? In the capitol building somewhere? Please be more specific. I get that I have to get y'alls trust before you let me know anything, but please don't be condescending to me. It just feels kinda like y'all dismissed the whole "not new to msp urbex" part of my post, and automatically assumed I'm just some idiotic kid pretending to know shit in the hopes that it'll make it easier for me to get location handouts. Fair enough I suppose.

More specifically in regards to local history and the news, I already know/keep up with that stuff. The history comes with the research, and keeping up with the news comes with keeping up with the hobby.

Ok that was a way longer response than I meant. I'll try to be shorter next time. See you guys in a few days (online, that is. I swear I'm not a super 31337 hacker or anything, just a busy college student)

As far as I'm concerned (and I know I'm not the only one), Imgur albums don't mean shit, and aren't going to gain you anything, trust-wise. If you have a strong passion for photography and want to discuss your photo art with other photographers, great, go and make some imgur albums. But there isn't some magic quota you need to fill in order to establish yourself. Lots of real and trusted explorers never take pictures at all. There are many great and talented explorer photographers too. But photography, or "proof" of your exploration exploits are not a requirement. At all.

Your questioning does come across as overly direct. I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for. "Happenings and such" could mean anything. What do you need to be brought up to speed on? You're asking about the inner workings and goings-on of my close personal friends. I don't go around asking strangers the private details about what's going on with their friend groups. If I'm not friends with them, it's none of my business. The only business we need to discuss here is exploring. And you don't really need anyone else here to catch you up to speed on that. You already know how to do your research and footwork to find places and go out and enjoy them. As for the FBI, that was ten years ago. All you need to know about the FBI is don't vandalize, don't steal, and don't be a terrorist.

You don't need anybody's trust to go have fun exploring. If you explore, you're an explorer. You don't need anyone else to validate you.

Information and details are distributed on a need-to-know basis. The most trusted of explorers are not given the rundown on everything happening at any given time. If an exploring project doesn't involve somebody, they don't get told about it. If that project leads to other developments that are worth sharing, then the information might get passed around. Nobody is telling trusted explorers in the community about all the groundbreaking projects. If there even are some. People keep super sensitive information close to the vest. They only might be going with one or two specific people to try and find a location. If they succeed and deem it safe to explore multiple times or with more people, they might spread the word. But there's no real incentive to disseminate information, even among trusted friends. There's just too many factors to account for, and too many good places have been ruined by good intentioned people telling the wrong person.

I don't think you're an idiot kid. You may be young, you may be enthusiastic. That's not a bad thing and not a strike against you. We all start somewhere. Some of the most fun and formative experiences in exploring can and do happen when you're at that age. But please don't tell me you're not new to exploring because you've been doing it for a year. Some of us have been around doing this for twenty years or more. Years and time don't really matter either, except that you learn from mistakes and experiences can really teach you a lot. But you also get to see many of your favorite old urbex playgrounds get vandalized, back-filled, and/or torn down. It can be exhilarating and it can be heart breaking.

My best advice is not to worry about what anyone else thinks of you. Be the best explorer you can, and go out exploring for as long as it appeals to you. But don't be an explorer to be "part of a scene" or because you are looking for some way to differentiate yourself from "the normal people." I still meet up with explorers who talk a big game about how they're in this hobby "for life" as if its a bad-ass proclamation or something. In reality, the only person statements like that impress are the people speaking them. Do exploring for you. Do it ethically, and do it with a preservationist mindset. If you are out there often enough, you're bound to run into somebody else.

TL;DR

Why is it that all of us figured this stuff out by ourselves without people showing us everything? I mean, it’s called exploring after all lol..

Edit:

I did go back and read, and I agree as I usually do with clockwork and his views.

to the OP, don't take this too personally, but you're really coming off as kind of whiny. Which I get, a lot of people don't want to work for anything, they want to be given information.

As I recall, my first UER post garnered a fair amount of flak from the usual suspects, within 30 minutes I realized 1. how everyone in MSP all worked, & 2. how useless UER is aside from entertainment. Then I edited the post, apologized, and started sending private messages to people who seemed to know something. The next weekend I was knee deep in the community and they seemed to like me enough so I'd say that's a good start.

If they don't like/trust you or your attitude/friends, tough shit bud, there's always the Instagram crowd.

"It's a gun!" "IT'S A GUN" "SOMEBODY KILLED SOMEONE!"

Its currently 1 in the morning why why why did I watch that. I now have a headache from their yelling and the shaky cam.

Anyway the "gun" just looks like a rusty piece of metal. It might actually be but I couldn't tell from the shaky cam. That was an awful 14 minutes of my life that I'm never getting back.

Oh and OP, I use two main ways to find locations.

1) Just keep your eyes open when you are going about your life. If you think you saw something in the car yesterday, either drive out to it or check it out through google maps/streetview. You will be surprised what you find if you keep your eyes open.

2) Google is your friend. One way is to just look randomly at google maps for things (very helpful for draining (ie when a creek just suddenly disappears)). Also search government databases and town service websites. You can find some pretty cool things this way. For example, to find possible drains you can search up old watershed maps and some larger cities even have public works maps available online.
