Cotterell Power Plant - A heavy goodbye

In death, a member of Project Mayhem has a name.

This was an iconic white whale. You couldn't not see the smelter buildings and stack while driving down from the hills. They were on a huge, very active mining property. This particular smelter and power plant operated form 1914-1971. Its history can be traced back to the 1880's when the silver mine became a large producer of copper. A recent discovery further underground of one of the largest copper veins ever found, seems to have spurred a clean up of the historic buildings on the property. Sadly, I discovered them gone as I passed by this weekend.

This place was great for an explore but risky. The buildings inside the property were closed off from even the workers but patrols (when not at lunch) were every 20min.

I have only seen one photo of the outside of the building, taken by an explorer from the smokestack. I have also read an old story of another person who actually made it in. The story insists that while he was in the basement, a scrapper was trying to flush him out by making tons of loud noises. This actually happened to us too, but eventually we figured out because of the patrols, it had to be something else. Once unfreezing ourselves to go check, it was confirmed to be the echoey loose sheet metal pieces dancing with the wind.

Truly amazing...I love the sky's coloration in 3 and 5. These are great shots all around (like 6-8 WOW!), a perfect memorial to what looked like an awesome explore.

This place - or at least the exterior - was a setting for the 2002 PBS "Mystery!" movie "Skinwalkers", where it was used to represent an abandoned paint factory that was leeching lead into the groundwater. I remember watching it as a kid and doing some of my first online research to try to figure out where it was, because it looked so cool.

I've never seen shots of the inside. Yours are absolutely beautiful, and absolutely nothing like the set they used to represent it in the film. What a shame that it's gone.

Thanks peeps. I just read they're pulling the smoke stack down soon
It's 10million cheaper to knock it than to restore it.

Thanks for the compliments on #3. That one was a suffering post process. I messed it up so many times trying to do it any justice without going too over-the-top with it. The predawn lighting was so wrong but I knew I needed that shot. I think it works well enough, especially since these were the source shots.

The first explore we moonlit hiked in from afar, tripping over cactus and snakes.
The second time we were passing by on a holiday and we had gotten a rare snow the night before. On a whim, hoping security was low, we walked in. Later while exposed, the sound of gravel under tires saved us by seconds. I had time to register the noise, motion my partner, and spin around a corner as security passed us by only feet away. Not sure where he was heading or where his track would lead him, I had just enough time again to pull up Google Earth to see the road looped back to our cover side and we spun to the sound of gravel crunch again. We made the tough call of continuing on and figured out the gravel crunch timeframe of rounds at 20 minute intervals. Once we were finished exploring, our timer failed us at security's lunch break and we were unsure of how to proceed. We ended up waiting until they started back up again, then hoofed the 22 minute hike out on the road and past the shack without looking back. It was impromptu and stupid but worth (especially now) getting to see it again.

That's cool info Baldran. You're totally right! I found a few stills online.

The lower level really was a wonderland with the colored window light. Most of those shots were around 5 seconds even at 5.6.

Your compositions and colours are fantastic. I love all the shots with the pipes and the green tones are really cool. That must have been an amazing place to explore.
