I know a lot of people here use Flickr, I still use it purely out of habit, but will be closing off my account.

Flickr Limits Free Plan to 1,000 Photos, Upgrades Pro Members

After Verizon-owned Yahoo sold Flickr to SmugMug in April of this year, it seemed likely that changes would be coming to the service due to new ownership. Today the first major changes just took place: Flickr has downgraded its free plan and upgraded its pro plan.
The Downgrade of Free
Flickr’s free accounts will now be limited to storing a combined total of 1,000 photos and videos. Photos aren’t limited by resolution and are stored in their original quality.

Prior to this change, Flickr users on the free plan were given 1 terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes, of free storage space at full resolution. Since 1 terabyte can hold 20,000 files weighing 50MB each (which is way more than most photos), this new limit of 1,000 files is clearly a downgrade for photo-happy Flickr photographers.

“Unfortunately, ‘free’ services are seldom actually free for users,” SmugMug says. “Users pay with their data or with their time. We would rather the arrangement be transparent.”

Flickr users who were around long ago may remember that prior to 1TB of free storage being announced in 2013, free users were limited to uploading 2 videos and 300MB worth of photos per month.

If you’re a Flickr free member who already has over 1,000 photos in your account, you have until January 8th, 2019, to download photos over the 1,000 limit. After that date, you will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. And after February 5th, 2019, Flickr will begin deleting files that are over your 1,000 photo/video limit, starting from oldest to newest, until your account contains only 1,000 files.

I'm going to move this to Main since it's a global thing, but announce it for now so it's visible to everyone.

Also: anyone with an older Flickr Pro subscription is losing the grandfathered rate of $24.95/year. Everyone is now being renewed at the $49.99 rate.

Supposedly emails went out in August, but with this announcement it's the first I'm hearing of it.

I have like 5 or 6 Flickr accounts, all of the email addresses tied to them have been abandoned years ago. I'm interested to see if those Flickr accounts vaporize. So far, they haven't.

I did get the email for it, so I can say that they were sent out. They weren't completely underhanded in how they've handled this... mostly, though.

Are there any good free photo hosting sites left? Now that Flickr and Photobucket have both become untennable for amateur photographers looking for cheap options, I'll have to start looking for a new place to host my photos

Imgur isn't bad. Instagram really isn't storage but it's really turning into the norm. Kinda disappointing but it was bound to happen.

Was I not the only one who thought things would get better after the acquisition? This is absolutely awful.

I have a pro account, and don't mind paying a couple bucks a month to store/host my photos since I don't want to maintain a website but the price went up to 5.99/month at a 3 month subscription.. which is fine, but are there any cheaper options? I like the layout of flickr and find it easy to use but haven't explored any other options.

It's all a bit of a storm in a teacup.

As it was, having 1tb of free space for all was an incredible deal. Most sites with 'free' accounts have a very limited storage space for free without upgrading so it was almost too good to be true.

To put it in perspective, $50 a year is a little under 14 cents a day. If you can afford mega money camera gear but can't afford 14 cents a day to host your photos, you're doing something wrong.

New account upgrades up to November 30th, I believe, is $30 for the first year. That's exactly what I'm going to be doing when I get a spare minute.

Yes it's a bit of a dick move for them to actively delete photos from accounts that don't upgrade but they aren't doing it overnight, they've given everyone plenty of notice.

While the cost is not really that bad, I feel that at times it can start to feel like "death by a 1000 cuts" with all of these different online services requiring you to pay for their premium plans. Obviously they need money, but I feel like flickr could change the free plan to a max size rather than a max number of photos. In addition, I feel as though they should have different tiers since if you are just over the limit it seems silly to then have to pay $50/year for unlimited.

I am certainly surprised that they originally offered 1 tb for free, that does seem a little insane. I'm guessing that they no longer data mine it for profit so its become a black hole for flickr profit wise.

Instasham compresses the hell out of photos so they're largely unusable for anything beyond a phone/tablet screen. I believe Imgur does as well, but not as bad.

This is the first I'm hearing of the $50 rate. That'll be enough for me to tap out and delete my account. I'm not paying for something that used to be cheaper/free.

oh and they also got rid of the option to print your photos out on these nice canvass prints with a frame. I had used that a couple of times. Now its just "pay this price" and we will print your photos in to a photo album.

I recall hearing that in the last 2 weeks in December of 2014, there were more pics uploaded to Facebook than were ever uploaded to Flickr in the time that Flickr has existed.

Deviant Art is also $50/year. $60 if you pay quarterly.

My solution is to create more email addresses and the sky's the limit(or maybe Disguise Da-Limit).

I actually _don't_ see this mail anywhere in my archive. You got the headers? was it from <[email protected]>? Wondering if they only sent it out to people that were up to renewal or something.

I would just settle for "reasonably priced" with a well intentioned ownership policy. I checked the pricing on 500px, its like 70$. If you search for "Flickr alternatives", SmugMug comes up as one of the options, kind of laughable. dA has a terrible UI, unless they have changed drastically in the last few years. I have been using Google Photos, its not terrible, but its an aggregation site, a dumping ground for all your photos basically.

I don't think I can use Instagram/Faceboot and feel good about it. I mean, we all realise that as soon as you hit upload on any pic, the genie is out of the bottle. Faceboot has the following in their ToS.

https://www.facebook.com/terms
when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights (like photos or videos) on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings).

The wording in the Instagram ToS is almost exactly the same.

This has been the case for some time. There was a scandal of sorts that profile pictures were showing up in ads. Since that happened, my profile picture was an picture of myself from a WWII movie I was in. More recently, it's a stylized picture of the Prime Minister of Russia.

If you have the privacy level set fairly tight, they can't (according to them) use the picture. However, cover and profile pictures are always public.

Moving all my older locations/images to a Facebook page I created specifically for posting abandoned building photography.

I make NO money from this hobby, and I cannot justify paying $60+CDN a year for the minimal service I get from Flickr.

I'd much rather see relevant ads (for cameras, lenses, printing companies, etc.) than this "pay us or we delete your content" schtick.
