I took the same photo twice, the only difference is what I chose to have my camera focus on. I'd like your guys' opinion on which subject is better.
1.

2.

I'm here for a good time not a long time.

I personally prefer the former: focus on the middle ground, with the intended details being left a tad obscured. My personal reasoning is because is just simple looks cooler, and the detail on dust can be quite stimulating.

I would agree with Joker; there's a uniqueness to the first shot that draws the eye more so than the latter shot. May not work in every situation, but it works well in this one.

Absolutely the second one.
The first one is confusing. I personally would much rather be looking at the bowling pins than the dust.

As is i prefer the second photo but lets say on the first photo the bowling ball was brought closer to the camera and it was in the focal plane. I would then prefer that.

Both are good photographs, each suited better for a different context

Thanks for the feedback everyone! You all made some good points. I'm still split between the two, but I agree it depends on the context. I also like the concepts brought up fo the same shot with small differences that could change everything.

The second one for sure. Color drawing the eye assists in making the focus on the pins. Love the shot!

HA! You're still *split* between the two... Just had to point that out.

Anyway, I really want to like the first photo, but I can't. I find the dust amusing - I do, really, I like grime - but the background is distracting. Focusing on the center when such vibrant, isolated color lurks beyond it feels unnatural. If you wanted to focus on the dust AND draw automatic attention to it, I'd say get a darker or duller backdrop by turning when you shoot. Or maybe illuminate it with a beam of light to separate it better.
