Cool pics there SkyKid! Come over to the Island and I'll show you a couple amazing tunnels. A few of the guys on this thread have been in tons of them, including a few that are no longer accessible.

Happy exploring!

Cheers,
CMF

How do you guys find stuff like this all that i find are small concert tunnels.

I live in Chilliwack and some help would mean a lot to me since i don't know the place, pm me for any info for tunnels/drains around the place if you want. (Come with me if you want to)

Welcome! Frozen drains are awesome.

I don't know anything about Chilliwack, but there are plenty of drains in the lower mainland. If you dig around the forums here, you should be able to find a few other posts. Burnaby, North Van and Coquitlam have easily accessible and interesting drains. The ones in Vancouver proper tend to be a bit harder to get into.

The way to find them is to spend lots of time looking at maps, especially near water. All lakes drain into streams or rivers, and all of those eventually drain into the ocean.

Hello, this is my first post here after a lot of reading and researching. I was in my first tunnel a few days ago, while this is nothing new to the venerable members on this thread it was an adrenaline rush for me and left me feeling pretty pumped. I was trying to get to the Hall of Wonders via another tunnel, but the other entrance of the tunnel I was in is blocked off with a large metal grate. After this tunnel, the Hall of Wonders is next!

Welcome as well. Glad to see someone's still active.

Got to HoW yet?

I know there are several drains in that area that don't require rafts, cliff scaling, or yard trespassing.

Keep looking for those disappearing blue lines, and maybe dig around the older threads here for inspiration.

Thanks for the welcome HTP. I was going to hit up HoW, but assumed the rains would come and when they didn't come hockey started and sidetracked me a bit. Haha It would be nice to have one fellow explorer, but as soon as I mention spiders people start backpedaling. In any case I assume I'll be active for awhile!

Cheers,

Spiders. Meh...

Yes, beware the water. This time of year can be harsh, though we've not had as much rain as back in the day (mine) when it rushed around my ankles and almost knocked me on my ass during one of the GCG's HoW adventures.

The HoW is nice, but seriously...it's a water culvert. There's so much interesting stuff going on around the d/t core now that it would be good fun to put a team together to do some REAL tunnel exploring.

e.g. Has anyone taken a recent gander at the city's oldest brick building beside Capital Iron? It's a small stand-alone...pink paint, I think...and if you can ingratiate yourself to the people who occupy it now, they may let you down the two or three levels to see an actual tunnel entrance. It's blocked/bricked off now...as it was when J.Peterman, Alien and I saw it some 10/12 years ago...but that there blocked-off entrance is one of the few remaining in points to the tunnel...the real tunnel...that runs from the foot of Store, past Capital Iron and all the way to Warf St. tunnel.

And then there's Fisgard. THAT tunnel is still there, and still in use. You'll never get in, unless you can work your way in to the Store system.

Now...as far as this thread is concerned, it's worth noting (from a tunnel-researcher point of view, anyway) that two of the people I interviewed for the UTGC film are now i) the city's mayor, and ii) a city councillor.

Both were pretty supportive of the film's thesis. That's note-worthy. It might be 'good fun' to try to get either of them to comment on the veracity of the film's claim. The question you'd ask is this: Are there any plans for the city of Victoria to excavate and preserve the city's secret tunnel network?

Make sure the cameras are rolling so you can get their reaction.

Also, since the UTGC film pokes around the city's homelessness problem at length, it might be worth framing any discussion with the mayor and the city councillor around the idea of how they might best address the issue of urban indigence.

The film is 10+ years old now, and the homelessness issue is still as fresh as the day I started the project.

I guess the HoW and the tunnel I was in are very easy to access, but it is interesting that I have seen exactly ZERO pictures, other than the ones I posted, from that tunnel. Of course, that's not really indicative of anything, just something I realized the other day while researching a tunnel that exists in Fernwood.

e.g. Has anyone taken a recent gander at the city's oldest brick building beside Capital Iron? You mean that building? Not exactly "beside" Capital Iron, but it is the oldest building in the city and right next to the blocked off tunnel in the brickwork above the parking lot. You noted that the access in that building is "bricked off" so how does one gain access? There is access in the basement of a nightclub that just shut down, been trying to get my buddy to take me there, but I don't think he has access anymore now that it is defunct.
Also of interest, there is a LOT of construction going on downtown and most of the construction goes pretty deep so I am thinking more tunnels are getting blocked, like the one in the Janion building.

There's plenty of pics of HOW on this UTGC thread, they're the most plentiful in fact. Also check out Doug Clement Phptography as he has great photos of it, the sub basement of the Empress and other underground treasures. The building Kubla is referring to is North of Capital Iron on the same side of the street. It used to be a tattoo parlor, not sure what it is now. These tunnels are usually under the street as is the drainage system for the most part so unlikely to be directly affected by construction in most cases and many of them have been co opted for hydro electrical use. The one down Store street is most likely the remnants of a heating duct tunnel that carried steam through pipes to most of the major downtown buildings from the Gasworks plant at the foot of Pembroke and Store. Some are coal chutes that ran vertically up from the harbour toward such buildings as what is now Swans and as far as the Hudsons Bay building. Some claim another level of street exists below china town and johnson but more realistically there are connected, or formerly connected sub basements that run under the sidewalks. A guy I know used to play in a band that rehearsed in the basement of a tattoo parlor in Market Square and it had an opening to a long underground tunnel that runs beneath Johnson. Most access ways are blocked or sealed over but maybe if you know someone in the right position you could still get in. The cigar shop across from Swans is for sale, maybe you can bluff your way in and check out the basement. It's literally next door to one of the oldest drains in the city that carries the underground river water from the former Ravine. The old cistern is very close to this location and may still partially exist. Theres a tonne of hidden history in this town and definitely some underground spaces that are still very much there. The bricked in room under Wharf street that the stone Mason discovered is not the tunnel, That one is deeper and further in, used to be accessible from way down under restaurant which is now called Fins, and possibly still accessible from under the old Rithet building that now houses Darcys. Happy exploring. Don't drain when it rains, always take a buddy-running into strangers alone is scary enough above ground lol.

All very interesting information thank you for that Shazam. I haven't been in HOW yet, I am very new to this UE business, although I've lived in Victoria all my life and always heard about the tunnels, but never had the time or inclination to go looking for them until recently. I've seen LOTS of picture of HOW, but not the tunnel I was in, which is near to HOW.
I know what building Kubla speaks of now, just the pink paint threw me off. As far as I know it is still a tattoo parlor.

Re-check this thread. There are plenty of HoW pics. Re: Fernwood. Are you referring to the tunnel under Vic High? I can't rememebr...it's been a while.

You mean that building?

No. Not that building. I'm referring to the building beside Capital Iron. Stand in the parking lot in front of Capital Iron, and face it. It's to the right. THAT is the oldest (or one of them, anyway) brick building in the city. 1968 Store...I said Warf, I think...but it's Store Street. THAT building sinks about three stories below present-day street level. If you can wiggle* your way down to the lowest level, you'll see what I'm talking about.

*By 'wiggle,' I mean ingratiate yourself to the building's current occupant. Maybe they'll let you in, maybe they won't.

Peterman got in there with a camera and snagged some sweet video. That's part of the UTGC film.

Also of interest, there is a LOT of construction going on downtown and most of the construction goes pretty deep so I am thinking more tunnels are getting blocked, like the one in the Janion building.

Tanuki and I were the first citizens to gain access to the Janion. We saw a lot...not sure I recall seeing any tunnel stuff. Maybe I did...it was a long time ago. If you can get into the UER archives, look for JANION REVEALED. I think we scored that infil back around October 2005, long before it was sold and restored. I'd had my eye on that place for about 10 years before that, so it was a pretty sweet score when we finally got in.

Are you able to link me to the UTGC film?

Not to disagree with any of this, but in defence of the humble drain, they are probably actually more interesting in practise than "the tunnels", at least to some.

Let's say best case scenario, you uncover not just a tunnel under Wharf St, but also one under Store St, and even throw in a Fisgard connection. You now have two or three tunnels of at most a few hundred metres each, compared with ~10km of walkable drains of all shapes and construction types. We have concrete, brick, rock and even wood drains here, some several kilometres long. We have box drains, circular drains, egg shaped drains and more. You don't really get that in many other western cities.

I understand that they don't have the mystery and history of a non-water carrying tunnel, but we are very lucky here to still have such beautiful historic architecture hidden away.

I also get that this is the "secret tunnels" thread and not the drains thread, but the two don't seem like entirely incompatible topics, especially given the age of some of our drains.

Anyway, not to distract, please carry on with the tunnel talk.

I guess I touched on everything else in my message to you. I'll send you another message shortly. In regards to the Janion, I find your posts are often very cryptic and in one of your responses to someone years ago you seemed to be hinting at the fact there was indeed a tunnel inside the Janion. I did a quick search to find said post, but of course couldn't find it again. I guess it doesn't matter now since the Janion is all fixed up for the rich folk. ;) As for "JANION REVEALED" I am not a full member, so don't have access to that section.

Google search term: Under the Garden City.

I did, I searched using a variety of different keywords and nothing came up. Maybe you need full member access for this as well?

Hey Kubla, ya ever think of doing an anniversary re release of UTGC?

A whole new generation of Vic city explorers could be turned on to the search, maybe even ad updated info on the never-ending homelessness situation.

Too bad I missed that beautiful brick work in the Ross Bay Drain. Almost had tears in my eyes when I realized that... I guess there is the Fernwood drain still with the brick work. Seems like most of these rumours surrounding tunnels and drains are actually rooted in fact. Very interesting. I need to do a lot of exploring late spring/summer.
