Unfortunately the rain came hard.
The forestry slash came down blocked a river and dammed a bridge
Road closed 4 hours.
Turned back as I ran out of time.

On the way to 35 some small town taverns.

Going through the gorge, it's often closed with slips.
It's not traveled much anymore.

In 1922 they tried to farm the gully and built a bridge.
In the 70s when farming in the valley was abandoned vehicles stopped using the bridge and it was no longer maintained.
By the 90s, the bridge was near to collapse and in 1994 was restored for historical significance.

People moved from the area they no longer needed the post office.

The old prison was briefly made into holiday park accommodation.

One wharf at 600 metres took three years to build and was completed in 1929.
The Depression, war and better roads all took it's toll and it closed to shipping in 1968.

The Meat works factory also closed around that time.

The carcasses were loaded on rail trolleys down the hill to the bay and another wharf was built to ship them off.

Sadly this wharf is slowly deteriorating.

Very cool.
Your country is beautiful.

I'm one of those silly Americans that doesn't have a passport but if I did, your country is definitely on my short list of must see's.

I appreciate the photo tour of this place. The surrounding countryside paints the picture of a once active, little town set in a gorgeous area. I enjoyed the pictures!

Yes, the main town has less than 1% of the 6000+ people that use to live and work there.

Oh mate this is fantastic stuff! I especially love the meatworks and the old prison. Is this in NZ? (I made a guess based on some of the signs)
