My first real UE in Colorado, a toxic ghost town high above the Eagle River. I got off to a late start and with only a few hours to spare before the long drive home I ran around snapping as many pictures as I could (Over 200 in the end) Unfortunately I was using my dinosaur of a phone to take the pictures so I tried to keep only the best. With so much left to see and such little time I decided to return the following weekend much earlier in the day, the hike in is long and beautiful so getting a head start is a good idea. This site is amazing for first timers and veterans alike so I hope you enjoy my photo set, I will post the return trip after I sort through the shots.

(Part 2 will contain the best of this place, Bowling alley, Medical center, and more!)

I apologize but the pictures uploaded in reverse to the order that they were taken.

1. One last look back.

2. High-rise.

3. So what's for dinner?

4. Howdy neighbor.

5. There goes the neighborhood.

6. Right this way, sir.

7. Come on in.

8. Postcard.

9. Fill er' up.

10. Good advertising.

11. Central park.

12. Stay frosty my friends.

13. What flavor would you like?

14. Free cable.

15. Going up?

16. Captain, I'm giving her all she's got.

17. Roll this way.

18. You're a real powerhouse.

19. Now available on steam.

20. How's the weather up there?

Excellent!

I'm heading there soon. Any general tips? The terrain looks like it may be challenging.

My advise would be to pick a cool day, as it can be very hot on the way in. Park away from the highway and hike the railroad tracks. From there it's relatively easy, however the old road leading in to the site shows signs of recent activity so be careful not to be spotted and have fun!

Wikipedia says: "The townsite is a victim of vandalization, and the town's main street is heavily tagged. There are only a few intact windows left in town, as twenty years of vandalism have left almost every glass object in the town destroyed."

Is that true? Effing douchenozzle turdlettes tagged this epic site up? That just makes me sick. Ugh. Kids have just zero respect today.

Still must have been a cool explore. Hugely jealous - always had a thing for ghost towns and mines, since I was very little. Unfortunately, Wisconsin really has neither. The only underground mine I know of is very tightly sealed since 4 young boys got lost in there a few years ago. We do have ghost towns listed, but they were mostly absorbed by neighboring towns. There are a couple true ghost towns, but literally nothing but some overgrown foundations.

I need to move to CO. Or NV, AZ, NM.....

Thanks for sharing - great pics - keep it up!

Unfortunately the town is heavily vandalized, but there is still a TON to see here. This area is rich in history and there are plenty of places still worth checking out. If you come up on a foggy day it looks like you've just stepped into the streets of Silent Hill! Thank you very much for all the feedback, and Mr. Bitey I may just take you up on that offer!

Many of the homes and businesses in this small community used the same/similar radiators, it must have been a trend back in the day. Thanks for commenting!

An hour from Madison to Milwaukee and then back again? The terms of this deal need to be a little sweeter than beer and jerky.

No deal! I'm out.... Travel safe - I look forward to your adventure pics!

Seems you get out of town a fair amount. Are these trips for business, then the pics during down time, or are they straight up pic trips?

Make sure you get up there very early if you plan on exploring the industrial site (down in the canyon) and the town all in one day. But I suggest to do both because even though the industrial site is smaller there is still a lot of good machinery/artifacts left to check out.

Oh wow, this place looks great - and the Silent Hill comparison is spot-on. I'm thinking a trip to Colorado needs to happen ASAP.

Plan accordingly, check the weather and come during a good time of the year (The winters here aren't very fun!) But whenever you do make it out I'm sure that you'll enjoy what this place has to offer, safe travels!

P.S. For the true Silent Hill effect I suggest coming in Autumn, lots of rain/fog and great fall foliage.

This beautiful place gets tagged because people openly say where it is located and how to best get there on public forums. Seriously guys, keep the location revealing pics away (like the sign that literally has the town name and population on it, ugh), and ask about the locations via PM so that not just ANYONE can see it.

You gonna bitch about nice locations getting tagged, then you should probably work to try and preserve them.

Due to the relatively easy access of this particular location I believe that even if it were to be kept incognito there would still be an number of people who would tag/vandalize it, however going forward I will keep lesser known locations under the radar. Thanks for the feedback, me and my team will work on this.
