I’ve been on here for 8 years later on this month. That’s only roughly just over half of the time UER has been around. I’ve learned a lot on here, made dozens of friends, some became extremely close friends for years. I’ve said some inflammatory things I shouldn’t have, said some shit I probably should have been banned for, definitely did some trolling years back. But I’ve contributed a decent amount to the forums, the DB, and whatnot especially as I grew up and took the overall picture more seriously. It just pisses me off that Blackhawk gets put on that list. I’ve has back and forths with him over the years, but he has also given truly fantastic advice, feedback, and history lessons on places. A lot can be learned from him. I just find it ironic that a hobby and this specific site that is supposed to be pretty open-Minded would shut someone up. Characters make a site great, having people that aren’t just dull boring robots make the site interesting. That’s just my thoughts on it.

I truly love this site. I’d be heartbroken if it ever got shut down. But I do disagree with this whole situation. My opinion does not matter here at all, and I will always be grateful for Av, and I told him as much the one time I met him a number of years back in Rhode Island. But to me, it just sends the message that if someone who contributes as much as Blackhawk does, who’s the next to end up like him?

I also think it may be good to add in some other moderators but I don’t even want to get started on that one right now.

Nonetheless, love all of you who continue to make this site something so special.

Quite so. Though I don't agree with the decision of Av and the mod team in this instance and know that my disagreement is irrelevant, I can (and do) still respect them and what they do. There is no other place on the web quite like UER, and I don't know where I'd go if it ever shut down.

So I'd like to thank the 2 people who checked out my ig page. You guys are cool 😎

I really like your IG page! Unfortunately, I was having some rather strange people messaging me asking about the locations I went to and I didn’t feel comfortable sharing them (by strange people I mean people with no posts on their feed). I just decided to delete my Instagram entirely. I prefer posting on UER.

My IG is immaturenomad669

I thought the name was fitting. But I am as obscure and private about locations on IG as I am here in UER. I say what the location is (mill, silo, factory, etc) and the state. I don't include the town name or any specific building names. I have gotten some people asking for locations of my explores. Most I ignore. Others I provide, if it is already a very heavily trafficked place and already totally trashed. This goes for UER and IG.

Usually with UER, I offer to meet up with new people that just want to know locations I have been to. Only one person has ever followed through with meeting up with me, despite dozens of messages from people. If you're not willing to meet up with me, or if you don't have enough post history to support me just giving the information to you if I'm not in the area, then it's not worth it for me to give that information out.

If the location is what I would consider a sensitive location, I don't post pics on IG (but I will on UER, less traffic), and I only go there with people I have explored with previously or other users say they are not idiots.

Just my stance on that stuff...

Yeah, I think that this is the right way to go about it. Instagram by itself is just another image sharing platform, no worse than Flickr or UER. The problem is with the particular brand of self-glorifying, careless urbex subculture that is concentrated there due to the lack of a mod team to keep that sort of thing in check. The platform itself (and the discrete Instagram explorers) aren't a problem whatsoever.

After all, photographers are artists too There's nothing wrong with wanting your art seen and praised, so long as you remember to put the protection of locations above your ego and to not encourage stupidly risky behavior via "monkey see monkey do."

I think it really speaks volumes that people have come out of the woodwork to show support for BlackHawk here.

When I first joined, he left a response to me and my first thought was "what an asshole." I quickly realized why he was saying and doing the things that he was and learned to appreciate him a "major" member of this "community." People I have met in person have mentioned him and now see things the way I do (at least I think so anyhow.)

I like what he has brought to UER in the time I've been here and I personally hope he's taken off of TM.

UER is worth keeping.

Thanks. I feel the same. We're in decline, for sure, with everyone on FB and instawhatever. But I hope UER will host us weirdos for a good long time regardless.

Astro, she's the one who placed the restrictions on his account from my understanding

You're misinformed. The troll-mode thing is an Av-only function. He instigated it in response to input from the mod team.

Posted by jeepdave
I don't hate our mods. But they do let their bias and emotions get the best of them quite a bit. Maybe we should rotate out some different mods from time to time?

I wouldn't mind some fresh blood myself. Of the whole list only a handful of us still partake in the internal discussions regularly. The thing is, pruning the mod list and voting in some replacements is kind of a big deal. Av's not really into the site anymore, and the active mods are still a relatively lazy bunch. Fell free to instigate something yourself.

My pet hate is the way some Moderators lock threads with their mightier than thou attitude.

Seriously? Thread locks around here seem like a rarity to me. And when they are locked I find it generally justified.

Can't the mods split topics when this happens?

Sorry, no. There is a feature that allows us to combine threads into one when the same subject is raised more than once. But there's no facility to fork a new thread off an old one.

Point taken. If anything, blackhawk's a character and a half. The mods'll be having a discussion about un-troll-modeing him, providing he can limit himself to a reasonable number of posts per day. Stay tuned.

Thanks for all your opinions, guys. It might not seem like it all the time, but we do value your input.

I'm just going to go ahead and state the unpopular opinion here, amongst all the "Free Blackhawk" calls: I support our mods. Maybe Blackhawk didn't break any rules per se, but if he's a continual nuisance and a continual source of complaints, it's the mods that need to deal with it. Their time is worth something too, and they only have a limited amount of it.

Consider the following two options:
1) They spend all their time cleaning up when Blackhawk causes trouble
2) They ban, shadow ban, whatever him, and spend their time getting rid of bigger nuisances like GoldenGateUrbex

I think that option 2 is better for the good of the forum and the sanity of the people who manage it.

I completely understand why Av has decided this isn't a democracy - I've come to the same conclusion myself with similar groups I run. It boils down to one simple fact: you can't please everyone. If you try, you'll not only piss off the other faction, but run yourself ragged trying.

Other members have been banned outright in past for behaviour similar to Blackhawk's. Just look at the ban list, and see how many banned members try to come right back. That can't be fun dealing with. So they're trying this new "troll mode" as an alternative - they should be allowed to experiment with things like that to see if it makes running this forum slightly less tedious.

As for "freeing blackhawk" - that should not come from a bunch of people yelling at the mods to do it. That should come from Blackhawk himself, improving his judgement. When he does that, and the mods find they're approving almost every post of his, he'll be freed. That would be positive change. Not freeing him because a bunch of unrelated people want it on principle.

TL;DR - I sympathise with what the mods deal with and I support the decision they made.

I disagree with everything you've said above.

Look at the people who have been banned, they deserve to be on that list. Blackhawk is not currently banned and is not on that list. Secondly, its been stated by a moderator that Blackhawk wasn't breaking any rules.

I don't believe for a second that Blackhawks posts were driving people away from this site. I've literally been PMing him via UER inbox since the day he rejoined UER a few years ago. Never had any problems and immediately became friends. Haven't even met the guy!

Also, and this is not talking down on anyone whatsoever but if our moderation team can't find the time to do their jobs on this forum, I strongly believe its time for new blood and some new moderators who are on this site every day and really care about it, people who know the rules, know the website, can answer questions from new people, can give advice, etc, etc.. Maybe people like Samurai and Jeepdave or Siper. I mean really, whats the harm in adding a couple more heavily active UER members to the moderation team?

Also, congrats to the 4 Corners, this is now the most active thread in a region thats been near death for a long time.

A guy who thinks he has it all figured out but just bunch of b.s. comments strung together for show with no evidence to back it up.

How is he such a nuisance? Any examples of that? How many complaints on him have you seen? Any proof or just more blow hard. Which messes has Blackhawk caused that the mods had to "clean up" Id like to know.
