Hey All!

Thought I would share these with the community, levitation photography is something I have always wanted to try. While it's been done and done and done before, it is still something that has intrigued me and I decided to use my annual photo shoot with my 11 year old daughter at a New York State abandonment to give it a try.

I had searched some ideas and knew going in what shots I was going to try and we had lots of fun with them, she turns out to be a natural in front of the camera

Then we found an old frame and I decided to have some fun, she has always wanted to know how I did those funny pictures with the frames.

Once we got these shots I we moved onto the next theme for the day, I had printed and framed some photos that I took of her in this same building in 2014 when she was 7 years old. The idea was to put her in place holding the frames, or looking at the photos in the same scene.

I can't ever give up the opportunity to shoot her underneath this skylight

Then, as we have for the past few years we stop and pose for a portrait together to close off the day before I treat her to iced cream as a thank you!!!

I hope you guys have enjoyed the set!!

Until next year.

PS This has always been one of my favourite spots to explore and it's great because you can contact the land owners and sign a safety waiver and enjoy a no stress, no rush explore with permission. It's in New York State, anyone can feel free to PM me if you want the contact info.

Here is a video Victoria and I made while we were there to take you on a little tour:

Always enjoy your Dad and Daughter series. If she doesn't take ballet, she should!! She has great form...holding the umbrella Love the one where she is crawling through the picture frame also. Watched some of the video but it was really blurry and pixelated... I may of had a bad connection. Awesome Pics!

Thanks man, it's actually very easy

Getting the Shot

1 - Find your scene
2 - Compose your shot (obviously you need a tripod)
3 - Take a photo of the room or area with no model or supporting device
4 - Do not touch/move your camera
5 - Use a ladder, stool, chair anything that will support the model
6 - Set your model in the poses you want to best give the effect you want
7 - Take pictures of model in floating/levitating type poses

Rinse and repeat for any other areas you want to try this

Post Processing

1 - I used lightroom to apply the exact same edits to both shots (shot 1 with no model and shot 2 with model)
2 - Then I opened both shots in photoshop and layered them in the same file
3 - I ensured that the photo with the model is the front layer
4 - Zoom in close and with a nice tight/small eraser I removed the edges of the stool that were touching the model
5 - zoom out and erase the rest of the stool/ladder/chair

Advice/learnings

1 - I added some shadow in 2 of the shots but could have done a better job, adding shadows improves the effect.
2 - If your model is wearing a dress, make sure you try and fluff the dress up before the shot and make it hang/flow - I had to use photoshop and clone the dress in one shot and it was a bit of a pain

Hope this helps,

This thread has brought a huge smile on my face. I keep picturing taking my now 2 1/2 year old daughter with me one day. How old was she when she first went? This is great!! Thanks for sharing.

These are really fantastic. I like the one where she is standing in the image and duplicated in the frame. I've wondered how these are done for a while and appreciate your step by step. Thanks for sharing!
