I got a taste of it in this post for instance.

A taste of what? It's a public forum. Just because you were the one responded to doesn't mean lots of others will read through that thread and see his actual useful and good advice. I fail to see the point you were making here Steed. Seriously.

If these people can't handle BlackHawk how the fuck do they get through interactions with other humans daily, much less the cops or security?

Exactly! How do these people take feedback in their job or life? I mean I'm sure there have been times my team would love to have me banned for this, that, or the other but ultimately if they do something that requires adjustment I tell them.

I apologize to the Four Corners members for letting this thread get hi-jacked but that's my fault.

Two things have become clear however:

2. The only people that want blackhawk censored are a handful of moderators

1. The Instagrunters are ruining the hobby, blowing up locations, getting locations shut down. Ive been making all my DB entries Full Member only but to what end? We still have plenty of Full Members that have no ethics and just want some quick followers and easy likes. They were made Full Members without any real contributions either, they just befriended someone in chat and got in.

5. These same assholes decry the DB for being detrimental to locations then turn around and post it all over Instagrunt and Flickr so their followers will think they discovered some really cool location (they found on UER)

17. Everyone with a smart phone is an urban explorer now better get used to it.

Hey guys,

So a couple of things.

First, I started UER because there wasn't any place like it on the internet in 2002. That's not really the case anymore -- you have Facebook, Instagram, hell even a Reddit subreddit would be sufficient. But as long as the community continues to want to use this site, I'll keep it online. You are correct in that there are no ads, no data mining, hell I don't even have Google Analytics on here. The cost of the hosting is donated, and I personally pay for the hardware and other costs (just upgraded it a few months ago).

Regarding Troll Mode, it was created as an experiment. I found that if I banned someone, they would just immediately register a new account and come right back. So I figured that a good experiment would be to place them in a mode where they could see their posts but nobody else could. Then, moderators could approve posts individually. In the history of UER, this has been used on maybe 5-10 people maximum.

Regarding Blackhawk... sometimes people haven't done anything bannable, but also are not a positive addition to this site. It's one of those "lesser of two evils" thing. Several people contacted me to tell me that they don't post on the site because every time they do, Blackhawk ruins their post. Does he break the rules? Not necessarily. But does he turn people off and make people not want to contribute? Absolutely.

We tried to get him to tone it down, but it was no use. He seems to lack the ability to determine when he's being appropriate or not. So rather than outright banning him, we decided to put him in this mode where a moderator could determine if the post is constructive and positive, and can approve it.

Anyway, I decided a long time ago that UER is not a democracy and that I would run things here the way I see fit. I'm sorry if that is a harsh reality for you, but it's simply how things go here. Over 16 years and this site is still online, so I must be doing something right. If you like UER, I invite you to continue to use the site, but if you would prefer a place with an elected moderatorship and term limits and tons of transparency and accountability, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Cheers,
-av

Hi Av!

Thanks for stating your position on this whole matter. I do think it’s important for your voice to be heard. I agree 100% that it’s your forum and you can, and will, run it the way that you see fit. I run my forum the same way. For a couple of years I contributed to UER because I understand the costs of running a site.

I don’t think that anyone is calling for elections or term limits, just a bit of transparency so we understand the rules of the game. It doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen. As Steed pointed out with regard to the TOS, "Also keep in mind (viii) and (ix) which basically lets us do whatever we want." I have respect for Steed and hope that’s not actually his attitude about his moderation responsibilities, and more so, I hope that is not the attitude of the moderator cadre.

I try to focus my posts on exploration and providing information for those who request it. I don’t get involved in disputes or pile on unpopular members. I don’t use the database since I do my own research and find my own locations. My photos are a bit off topic as they are abandoned mines rather than true urban exploration. None of the moderator’s activity affects me directly. That said, fair and equitable moderation is important to me. I believe that it is an important component of any discussion forum.

So this discussion is over. It appears that the valid concerns of your membership are outweighed by the complaints of a few those who don’t like Blackhawk’s posts. If we don’t like it we are free to leave. I am sincerely glad that you posted your thoughts on the matter. At this point each of us is free to ponder the situation and decide for themselves how to proceed.

All the best!

Abby

Steed, Archer, Boffo, Darkwolf, Av, Wang and to some extent 2X (I know you aren't on "the team" anymore but thats okay) we all rely on you guys to run this forum and hear us out. Its not easy and we appreciate the time commitment.

This thread was helpful, it gave all of us some insight on whats been going down behind the scenes lately and like Abby said, I think this thread is done. For one, I received my answers, GoldenGate was banned today and Blackhawk and I have been communicating privately, I'm sorry buddy that the results aren't different but Av has spoken, it is what it is, he runs this place. I don't think there's anything 2x and I can do anymore. Having your posts moderated isn't an end-all. I mean shit could be a lot worse....

Mario will be back, I'd advise everyone to keep an eye out. He's easy to spot, all we can do is request to put him in troll-mode apparently, just like Steed said.

Abandoned mines is definitely urban exploration, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I never said we weren't fair and balanced. It's just that I trust my moderators to do the right thing and most of the time, they do fine.

Keep in mind that this site is supposed to be about UE. Not politics, not idiots trying to ruin places, not arguing like children. As soon as the topic turns from the subject of UE, it is time to end it. People seem to forget that and want to use this as some kind of soapbox, and I am simply not interested in providing that. There's always Twitter or Facebook if you want.

This attitude seems to try and remove the human element from the forum. Of Course we will talk about more than just UE. It's a community. We talk about all kinds of shit. But being reactionary over a handful of people saying they don't wish to post and doing some "troll mode" bullshit is the childish behavior you claim to want to avoid. BlackHawks post have contributed far more to the community than they have detracted from it. I have always appreciated the site and the effort you have put into it. It's your ball. You can pick it up and go home if you wanted to but have not. I respect that. But maybe respect that if your long time members are calling out bullshit then listen.

Call it whatever you want. I have moved on, I focus my time and efforts on other projects now. If I were any other person, I'd just have shut down UER and walked away. I do want to keep the site online, but I give absolutely zero shits about dealing with petty arguments and idiots who break the rules.

Blackhawk has been in and out of the ban list for years. His name comes across the moderators desk more than most others. At some point it is easier for my sanity to just click the ban button and move along.

Well Ok then, Im sure you give zero shits about what I have to say or my advice but here it is anyway:

Delegate some authority to a couple of the moderators you can trust. (if you trust any of them that is)

The site would have less petty arguing, and bogus accounts would be dealt with quickly if your moderators had more authority and you established whats expected from that authority.

- Av will do what he wants with his forum, nothing we can change about that. Still happy this place exists.

- The Community wants blackhawk to return and be taken out of troll mode for many reasons.

- Av heard our concerns, and has made his mind up, and no matter how much we disagree, there's not much we can really do. I still want blackhawk to be free and out of troll mode as do most of us.
I don't think Av will change his mind but I'm glad that we came together to try and get him out of TM.

-And more less this thread will most likely become pointless banter then get locked.

Can't the mods split topics when this happens?

I used to moderate a (now defunct) forum and when a thread went sideways, I could split the topic at that point.

That's here to stay for now.

I've met older people that talk about climbing bridges and running around in tunnels and abandoned buildings in the 1930s.

I'm sure people were exploring abandoned and off-limits places throughout history. As for the scrappers and vandals, archaeologists have found graffiti from thousands of years ago. The tombs of many Egyptian Pharaohs have been looted for all they're worth.

No one here invented anything. Time marches on.

Fuck Instagram.

Fuck (the exploitative side of) Instagram. People just abuse it the wrong way. Besides my photography account, I have one for my paper collages, one where I review albums in my LP collection, and a personal one for random daily shenanigans. I think it’s a decent platform for certain things that aren’t fit for sites like Flickr, and its a free alternative to paying for your own domain. I think sites like Twitter are far more caustic than anything else.
