So I was busy thinking about surveillance and wondering how I could do it with an old phone and battery packs or something and it suddenly occurred to me DUH there are purpose-built devices for this already.

So, simply; have you ever used one or thought about using one? It's crazy this thought only occurred to me now after like 3 years. I already explored this small place, I'd just like to see how active it is over a few weeks time maybe. Any other ideas? I know I could just prop something on a door or do it more lowtech but it would be nice to actually SEE firsthand site activity

I looked online, and a cheap game camera is about $30. Seems like an awfully expensive item to leave unattended in an abandoned building for urbex. That said, I've heard that some property owners have started using them to catch trespassers.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I've a friend in court for trespassing and vandalizing (she didn't do that part) that can attest to game cameras being used by property owners. And in today's day of google picture searching and FBook is apparently easy to find someone based on a face.

Sure, it's great fun to see people's faces when they realize they're looking right at a camera.

I happened to know a guy who got the sh*t kicked out of him because he would sneak on some dude's property and steal the weed that he was growing there to resell it. He ended up getting spotted by one of these game cameras, and the dude who owned the property happened to know him.

Pretty much to answer your question, yes, people use these things guard property.

Yes, I actually had an issue with this at a place once. Spotted a trail camera in a tree, we took the SD card and had a lot of fun watching a BUNCH of explorers, scrappers, and others walking right by it. Hilarious. On a campus, where there is one, there is more.

One of my friends has used cheap prepaid phones as short term surveillance, would buy them on sale.

I got busted by a deer camera like 5 years ago. There was no on-site security presence so the deer cam texted my picture to the state police who rolled up on me as I was leaving the property. The property was under the jurisdiction of the EPA who were doing a superfund remediation at the time and that probably explains the sophisticated setup.

But this was 5 years ago so I'm sure these system are a lot more advanced today.

The deer cams that have their own built-in 4G hot spot are a lot more expensive than the ones that just store images on a camera card but they have the advantage of reporting in real time. It would benefit today's explorers to invest in their own 4G deercam so that they could monitor who is rolling up on the property in time to beat a hasty retreat.

ideally, you would set the camera up at the primary access road, gtfo when you are texted a pic of the cops rolling up, then return at a later time to retrieve the deercam. Even if you somehow don't get the deercam back then consider it a wash as those things cost roughly as much as a trespassing ticket - and cheaper if they try to throw a lot of extra BS like vandalism or B&E at you (which they also tried to do with me).
