I appreciate that a lot man I do. But I have moved on. Steed and Emperor Wang will take care of y'all best they can with the authority they're given.

I will still log in for shits and giggles and may even add a couple more gems to the DB, but UER is not the fun place it used to be.

Disregarding goldengateurbex's inane ramblings, what changed? Was it the numerous old guard who stopped exploring? Was it a culture shift among UER's users? Was it the number of controversies over the years, or perhaps the decline of Avchat and slowing of traffic? I'm genuinely curious, as someone who never experienced the "old" UER, why is it not fun anymore?

That's a fair question I suppose, not sure Ive got the complete answer.

When they put "troll mode" on Blackhawk (for no TOS violation), just out of pure hate, I decided this place was not going to be it was meant to be, a resource. He was actually a pretty good resource for real world stuff, a walking encyclopedia on photography too but some moderators just got their panties in a wad because they didn't like him and had no reason that would ban him so his posts are controlled and don't show up unless his assigned moderator allows them to show up. Troll Mode. Im probably next.

There are two words for that; Chicken Shit (or is that one word chickenshit)

When actual trolls are allowed to roam free, advocate vandalism and graffiti, post bogus stories about locations and getting shot at etc, and the leadership here defends their right to be trolls, I just decided I wanted off the mod team.

Its funny the people that cry about hate and injustice all the time are guilty of being 1st class haters. Life is too short to put up with that chickenshit.

Yeah, I heard about that- and I agree completely with you on this one. Troublemaking firebrand he may have once been, he hasn't been that way for years, and his knowledge about potential hazards is incredibly valuable. It's a shame to see moderators abuse their power for personal vendettas, silencing valuable members of the community. You'd think that antics of certain "graffiti hunters" who post exact location directions would be a more important issue.

They didn't even ban Blackhawk, just put him in troll mode in the hopes that he left on his own. If you're gonna try and get rid of someone, commit to it.

I third this.
Highly active user with one of the highest "like counts" and willing to help out with info on a daily basis. I've never heard of a forum with a bullshit babysit mode like UER's where every post has to be approved first. Especially the fact that it's somehow indefinite with no probation end date. At least with bans, it's clear that they got the hammer, why they got the hammer, and when.

Astro is going to lock this thread

I can't say for sure which moderator it's going to be but I can say this, this thread is definitely stepping on a lot of toes and someone's going to shut it down.

Criticism of the status quo is generally not well appreciated here by some.

Having had a chance to think about it more it really does seem like the best use of troll mode is to control actual trolls as opposed to contributing members of the board whom have methods or writing styles that you personally dislike. Failing to control people who Advocate vandalism or graffiti while silencing those that you have simply taken a personal dislike to seems disingenuous at best and harmful to the site at worst.

As to the other point I really don't know why I Astro has taken such an intense dislike to Blackhawk. As far as I know the two of them have never even met. It does seem like she and a small handful of other mods have taken over defacto day-to-day leadership of this site and as such are enforcing a personality litmus test on who they wish to be members.

I am not one who usually chimes in on things nor do I make a habit of giving my opinions about controversial topics....BUT...I just wanted to say that I am truly shocked to learn of this "troll mode" placed on Blackhawk. I always have found him to be a wealth of information, very knowledgeable about so many topics and in any of my interactions, he has been very helpful and genuinely concerned for explorers. It does seem very unfair to be placed in "limbo" with no obvious reasons that are evident to the naked eye. What ever happened to just ignoring what/who irritates you if no harm is being done? I don't get this "mode" or "ghost ban"...whatever its being called. Sure hope this decision can be reversed based on the user's merits and not what seems to be personal vendettas.

Make UER Great Again

term limits for mods, democracy, elections!

no reason for Blackhawk to be treated like this, troll mode since February at least and a banned member like goldengate runs amok making multiple profiles and exploiting locations.

edit: I do give credit to Archer, Steed & Wang for the rolling tempban on goldengate. And I do appreciate what you guys do for our community don't get me wrong.

I agree with all said previously on said moderation and freeing blackhawk.

I also wanted to chime in and say I love how this went from someone trolling to a completely DIFFERENT topic altogether. You all are epic.

black(hawk) lives matter?
I haven’t been around too long but I think b-hawks contributions are way more insightful than the average joe’s. I always thought his sense of humor was genuine & not troll-esque. Always did enjoy those smart-ass posts. Admittedly, this is the first time I’ve heard of this situation, so I’m not quite informed enough to throw in that good of a debate.

I had no idea that he had that type of ban/limit put on him, but I guess I'm not in the loop enough to know about these behind the scenes things. He always seemed like a good poster to me. I never had any bad interactions w/ him, and he's been rather helpful, which seems what this site should be based around.

TROLL MODE?? Blackhawk is a troll? His posts have to be approved by a moderator?

In the grand scheme of things I'm a bit of a newcomer to UER. I don't get involved in who said what to who, or who wasn't nice to who. There are folks on the forum that I like and there are folks on the forum that I don't care for. That's true on every forum on the internet. We are a diverse group.

I've been moderating and running forums since we all used dial up modems. I have a lot of respect for those who are willing to step up and moderate a forum like this. It takes a lot of time and dedication. For good or bad, the moderator cadre set the tone of the forum by their actions. As moderators change so does the personality of the forum.

Urban exploration tends to attract people who are a bit out of step with "civil society". It often attracts big personalities and people with strong opinions. It's the nature of what we do. We go places that others don't. We see beauty where others see ruin. Some of us risk our lives to experience the past. We don't care what others think of our activities. We often have to step outside the boundaries of the law to pursue our passion. It comes with the territory.

It seems like UER is having an identity crisis right now. It's becoming a "softer and kinder" place. I've scratched my head recently when a number of threads were locked well before there were any fireworks. I really don't understand those decisions. Certainly the moderators can't allow ongoing bullying, but expressing frank opinions is not bullying! Calling someone out for a BS post is not bullying. Do we need a "hurt feelings" page where we can complain that someone wasn't nice to us? That someone didn't give us a "like" on our post? Urban exploration is an adult activity. I don't mean adult by age, but rather adult by maturity. If you can't take a little heat here on the forum, you aren't going to do well being confronted by angry property owners, security, vagrants, or the police.

UER needs to decide what kind of site it wants to be. Are we all going to hold hands and sing Kumbaya? Is everyone who has a strong opinion going to be moderated? Is UER going to be a book club or sewing circle? If so, then the leadership of UER need to get together and craft an UPDATED policy statement about posting behavior on the forum. It needs to lay out what is acceptable and what is not, what leads to being placed in moderated status, how a member can get out of moderated status, and how to appeal the decision. Being arbitrarily placed in "troll mode" at the whim of a moderator or small group of moderators is unacceptable. Moderation needs to be fair, predictable, and consistant across all of the sub-forums. Moderators personal likes or dislikes of individual posters cannot be the basis for moderation. These are fundamental concepts to forum moderation. Just like bad management drives away good workers leaving only those who can't find a job anywhere else, over moderation will drive away the most prolific explorers leaving those who only want to look at other's exploring pictures.

Back to the specific case of Blackhawk. He and I have had a number of back channel chats and I have found him to be a nice guy. I would gladly explore with him any time, any place. Can he be a bit rough on the forum? Sure. Having a big personality and strong opinions does not make him a troll. That's not a reason to moderate him. Just do a search of his posts and see if you find something offensive in his writings. I did the search and didn't find any posts that reached the threshold for moderation. Let's deal with the contents of his posts on the forum, not whether a moderator likes or dislikes him. I would like to see him immediately restored to unmoderated status unless a moderator can provide a compelling explanation as to why he is still being moderated.

This is UER's sandbox and they can run it any way they want. Some people will be attracted to a very civil forum. Others will be pushed away by the limits of what they can say in a post. Although I tend to avoid verbal conflict on the forum, I am an advocate of allowing people to speak their mind. Like many others, I will simply walk away from the forum if it becomes too oppressive. No final post explaining why I've left. No drama. I'll just quietly leave and go somewhere else that better fits my personality. I think many others feel the same way. The slow death of a once vibrant forum.

I think its only fair to point out that this site is free, no ads, no data mining, no spamming, Av ran it as a hobby the way he see fit. I sure as Hell wont speak for him but I understand he has moved on too.

To paraphrase what Abby so aptly stated if you cant tolerate the heat (or stench) then just get the Hell out, that's why I left the moderator team.

Ive still got a lot of content on here in the DB, its what I came here for in the first place and I still enjoy that so I plan to stick around. I just wont have to police the immature, whiney, phony adventurers trolls, garden variety vandals, know-it-alls, porno spammers, scrappers and the new generation of urbexing taggers and super graffiti punks. (can you believe I actually took that duty seriously for a several years)

two408wonderers aka Mountainmandan among other accounts may indeed be on a rolling temp ban since he has not posted in a while otherwise he would be trying to make a name for himself amongst all the other graffiti hunters. The reason for the rolling temp ban is at least some mods have recognized this is a duplicate account and lack or any contribution. Av will not share authority with the moderator team to permanently deal with these little trolls or even spammers so we had to go in every couple days and renew temp bans. So if he logs in and somebody is able to put up a convincing argument for banning this little spray paint asshole, it may happen. Or it may not. Thankfully I cant view that crap any more.

Like the rest of us, blackhawk aint perfect, but he is a far cry better resource than little goldengate Mario and some of the other non-exploring posers ever will be. I think it resurfaced when we had the Politics sub-forum (terrible idea to begin with) emotions and hard feelings ruled the day. There was practically no moderation and people said things online they would never in 6600 years say to someone face-to-face. So I find now I am back to my original dilemma; is chickenshit one word or two?
