Plagiarism is rampant on YouTube. It seems there are a lot of people downloading and flipping* existing videos and racking up 100,000+ views.

*Flipping is taking a video and flipping the picture 180 degrees horizontally to evade the anti-plagarism algorithms while keeping the action basically the same.

I have just benefited greatly from around 10 different YouTube channels that were doing just this with my content, as well as taking photos and my stories from my website and making their own videos, then monetizing them without my permission.

What I did here was I started by submitting a copyright strike/takedown against one page and he emailed me begging me to retract the strike and work a deal with him.

I told all ten YT page owners that I want a 70% cut of the lifetime revenues of the videos with a screen capture to prove (I also have a program that shows rough revenue for any page, so I would know if they had fucked with the screen cap and short changed me)

Then I said I will be in touch every month expecting a new screen cap and then a payment of a certain percentage of the revenue for that month for each video. Most of them chose to delete the video.

So I came out with a number of very handsome paypal transfers over the past two weeks. Oh, and I told them to add the 2.9% paypal fee to the total so I wasn't stuck paying the Paypal fee.

As someone that does enjoy following >certain< people on YouTube this doesn't apply to most. Now you do have plenty *coughmoesargicough* that do this clickbait stuff and show little respect.

I've met Moe, a handful of times and been out with him twice.

When the camera is off, he's a very normal guy, not annoying or obnoxious, not loud or anything at all like his YouTube persona.

He knows what his audience likes and what makes him money. He IS learning about exploring as he goes and while his persona and methods of shooting won't be changing...he is learning the exploring mentality of secrecy and trying to keep certain details quiet.

I have to applaud his determination and stick-to-it-iveness, he drove alone all the way from Ottawa to Rhode Island last year just for one location and FOUND TOMS HAUNTED COFFIN lol

I have just started in the last months doing some basic Youtube videos of explores. I find most of the stuff out there pretty cringe worthy (emoting, fake blood, fake stories). I've made it a point to not name any places, and to stick to known history and keep down the antics. That said I have few subscribers, and those that do this have many. Clearly what is making people money now will keep driving these channels and I think we will see a lot more destruction to come sadly.

I haven't seen much of people acting like idiots in their videos, but then I don't normally watch those vids if it's not for researching a place. My biggest complaint has been YouTubers FILMING THE FUCKING POINT OF ENTRY.

It seems like it's getting harder to find ways in that people haven't slapped online yet. I keep thinking I'm being clever by going through the woods until I find out I triggered a game cam...

At 2 copyright strikes, you get banned from uploading anything for 3 months. At the 3 strikes, their channel is deleted. If they have 2 strikes, they're willing to make a deal.

I got in trouble for content violations. Too many transphobic haters complaining about my videos. It seemed like every week I was requesting manual review to get a content strike removed. It was more work keeping the videos on Youtube than it was making the videos in the first place.

It's been this way for several years here in the states bud, which I know you are aware of.

It's a shame to hear it's happening on your side of the pond as well. The exploring scene in Europe always seemed a bit more laid back and relaxed, at least to me. You guys haven't been infiltrated as badly with Instagram whores and YouTube sensationalizing idiots. Everything fun is getting ruined by idiots these days and us Americans seem to be the biggest perpetrators.

More than a decade now... it was happening 12 years ago and long before that.
Pennhurst was fully functional in 1940, still pristine in 1989, even in 2006 it was largely intact.
Groups however organized including lawyers can be trash anything damn fast if they choose to...

As others have mentioned, this is definitely a problem in the States and other parts of the world. I think the worst part about this, besides the government getting involved and the shitty clickbait content, is the (unfortunate) fact that a lot of kids watch these types of videos. When I first saw that these peoples' fanbases were mostly kids I thought, "Oh, they're getting kids into UE! That's good," but that was before I actually watched the videos. After I watched lots of these videos, I realized. They're not getting kids into the proper type of UE.

Kids see the video of FazeRug exploring the "HAUNTED TUNNEL" and they see one of these "haunted tunnels" so they explore it using their phone's flashlights while simultaneously recording, and their batteries die and they get stuck. They see Carter Sharer or Moe exploring an abandoned building without a respirator or proper equipment, so they explore one themselves without respirators or proper equipment.

Not all kids are like that, though. The other week I met two teenagers in a drain and I was able to have a good conversation with them. They had their dad's professional gas detector, good lights (with backups), a first aid kit, and good cameras. They even identified as urban explorers.

Not all of the YouTube "urban explorers" are bad, either. Exploring with Josh/John/Cody, The Proper People, Adam The Woo, and other similar YouTubers are decently professional and most of them have disclaimers in their videos/description boxes.

Anyways, I'm sorry for writing this essay and bumping this thread back up to the top, ha ha; just had to say something, ya know?

Maybe it's elitist of me, but that's my issue with so much of the social media focused urban exploration culture. Instead of focusing on locations, it glorifies the explorer. It glamorizes the dangers involved while at the same time doing nothing to teach viewers how to avoid them.

I can think of no better example than the Instagram roof topper trend. Done properly, there's nothing wrong with it- but these "explorers" make a living doing stunts hundreds of feet in the air with absolutely no safety equipment, and it inevitably leads to rookies wanting to imitate what they see online. We see the results of this all too often, such as the Russian teen or Chinese rooftopper who both fell from a building while hanging off the edge. And the people who encourage this behavior get TV show contracts with companies such as Red Bull, making it so very profitable.

So many are encouraged to undertake dangerous stunts for the sake of views, with complete disregard for the very real dangers they put themselves in- and the constant stream of likes and views makes it all too easy to rationalize it as okay, because the gratification just keeps on flowing in.

Exactly! That is a perfect way to put it.

I and many others would much rather have the location be the center of attention instead of the explorer(s). I would much rather watch an explorer who knows what they're doing than someone who's all, "I'm doing something really dangerous right now, look how brave I am! Now I'm stomping on these dilapidated stairs, wow I'm really brave!" I don't really care about the "dead body" the title claims they found while exploring the "haunted $1,000,000,000 drug dealers" mansion. I'm there to look at the amazing architecture at an abandonment that is too far away from me, not the "$100,000 STASH" found in the "CREEPY HAUNTED ABANDONED HOTEL."

Most of these videos are like vlogs. Vlogs that focus too much on the person(s) handling the camera. The sad thing is that reporting the clickbait and/or disrespectful videos doesn't really do anything; the YouTube staff don't really seem to care, unless the video has only a few views or it is by a small content creator. I have tried reporting many videos by big content producers that clearly violate YouTube's ToS, and nothing happens. With small content creators though, it works pretty much every time.
