Light, this may help.

So recently on the way to explore I grabbed this light. I felt like with the ruggedness of it and it being an LED and rechargeable it was a win. Not to mention $20.

So while we were out shooting I noticed that I had to bounce the light and do strange tricks to get good exposure while keeping my ISO as low as I could. When I shot with the light straight on it was super super high beam and round circles. It ruined a LOT of shots.

I came home and after culling my images I knew this was not going to work for me. I had an idea and I went to target. I got a pack of really thin cutting boards. Cut a circle out of it and used some gaffers tape to keep it in place. The result was diffused light that will work really well for low light photography and also not having a high beam of light seen while you are exploring. I thought this was a cool idea and it worked for me so I figured I would share.

Personally I'd never carry something with a pistol grip while walking around an abandoned building to each their own. I use cheap LED's I got at home depot that disperse the light really well.

Never thought about the "pistol grip" on a light. Though potentially dangerous I have never seen a handgun that looks that big and round.

For what its worth if I was in a situation where I needed to drop it, I would. Its rugged and can handle it. lol

pretty sure cops aren't thinking that they're never seen a handgun that big around when they shoot someone who is holding something that looks like a handgun... even if it doesn't...

I just dont see how this looks like a fire arm. If you are using a flash light and you are holding it out in front of you its clearly a flashlight.

I own a lot of hand guns. This is not something you would mistake.

AND if you're going to get shot by a cop who cant see what it is and holding something then thats going to play out no matter how it looks.

It only takes one dumb ass 13 yo girl to get her mother to call the cops because she saw you with a gun.
It doesn't matter what you think.
It's what -they- think...

been there, got dimed out like that.
A 12 gauge pump action shotgun pointed at your chest from 10 feet out by a pissed off cop will give a new meaning to getting shot by a cop for you

I really don't think it's legitimate to say people are going to think it's a gun. If he has it in his hand, it will likely be illuminating an area and would not look like a gun. Come on guys think about it for a second.

I don't know if it would look like a gun, but I do know that same idea works better on a flash.

'Mild shit water'? Is that kinda like a 'slight case of e-coli'?

Not too much into drains, but some good pics nonetheless.

Well people have been killed for having nothing in their hands, so yeah I don't think it's wild to consider the possibility. Also, nobody here has ever had a light shined in their face when they're in the dark? It's likely a pistol grip flashlight, but it could also be a rail mounted light on a sidearm. If all they see is the grip and the light in their face in a high stress situation they could easily justify that at trial.

The point wasn't that "your flashlight looks just like a handgun". My point was that I wouldn't carry one on the off chance it could be confused as one. And that there are better options.

Unrelated to the fact that it has a pistol grip.......

I think that is a genius thing to do. I have had plenty of my photos ruined by that flashlight spot. I've often thought of investing in a camera light but will try this first. Thanks for sharing!

On a sorta unrelated but fully related side note this is one of the best flashlights I've ever seen. Yeah it's a little pricy but 100% worth it

Thank you. I had a cool idea. I thought so anyway and it worked. Which made it even cooler.

Aside from UE. You could actually use this for rim lighting hair of back lighting models. All you need is someone to hold it while you shoot.... and its $20ish.

Exactly. Mistakes happen even in daylight.
They aren't going to sit there and rehash it either. Once cops think they got a perp with a gun their demeanor and response changes.
Everyone wants to go home, intact, at the end of their shift...

Even when approaching cops I know, I keep my hands in plain sight and never blind side them when approaching them. If I don't know them I keep my hands where they can see them at all times and ask/tell before going for ID, etc.
They recognize and appreciate these gestures.
A relaxed LEO is a lot easier to deal with and more likely to cut you slack... and never call them 'boss'
