Civil War Nursing Home < on 2/6/2018 3:41 PM > | Reply with Quote
As the subject line says, this was once a nursing home built for widows of the Civil War. Opened in 1890 originally, but the original building caught fire and this new 53 room complex was built 10 years later. It was shut down in 1996 due to costly repairs and was cheaper to go to a new facility. I work less than 10 minutes from this place, and never heard of it until I randomly stumbled on a video of it. Sure enough, they already started to demo it, but I drove by just to see what was left. Half of it's gone, but the rest was still there. Still a cool place to check out nonetheless. Sorry for the photo quality, it's all cellphone. I might take my digital back later this week. Thanks and enjoy.

It makes me so upset when old buildings get torn down but even more so when they have historical value as I'm sure this one does. It makes me worry for a time when there won't be any old buildings left and all for the sake of "progress". Sorry didn't mean to turn it into a rant.
Amazing photographs! You have truly captured the building's memory!

Posted by EsseXploreR Fuckin A. I didn't even know it was coming down. What a shame. Definitely would have made a nice residential if converted.
Did it have elevators? This lacking feature makes rehab more difficult and is something that helps kill older institutions. It was a beautiful structure... those poor widows
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

I agree. I wish I was a millionaire and could afford to fix these places up... This place is in really bad shape though, but it would still be an accomplishment in itself to bring it back to its glory. I would love to see that. I just checked your Flickr too, and only saw one pic you posted. Do you have anymore you could share?

Me too man... I have so many emotions towards these places, but I am not even sure why. I think we all have that in common with exploring these places... It sucks to see history be wiped away like this. I completely agree with your last statement too... it's sad! Don't be sorry, I feel the same way.

Yes, it had an elevator for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor.
The problem is the area it's in... just no financial aid available. It always comes down to money. They were talking about millions to repair it only 7 years after it closed. I could imagine it would be even way more than that now.

I was able to get in here again, which will probably be my last time. I said my goodbyes. Still makes me sad to think a building that's over 100 years old couldn't be saved, but it is what it is. Hope you guys enjoy... I know I had a lot of fun checking this place out. Until next time... Farewell L.G.A.R.

One elevator for a structure that size isn't enough. There appears to be a lot of water damage... DOA Abandoned buildings that aren't heated and water tight tend to die relatively fast. Once the roof goes it's all over.

And at least down here one of the first things, along with machines and wood flooring, that gets sold off and removed by scrappers and salvage companies... and the property-doom cycle continues.
