When you're offering to share information with Teh Intarwubs, you're demonstrating that you can't be trusted with information.

Well, true enough, since his flickr photography page has the real location names to go with the pics Im guessing he doesn't care who sees it

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Well, when I say happy to share that doesnt mean me just dropping it to people.

Okay, so how are you going to figure out who is trustworthy? Number of spots visited? Amount of years exploring? General reputation? Not a single one of those factors is a sure fire way to determine if someone is going to respect a place. And you don't know who that person is friends with either. I've known a lot of people who I thought to be good enough to share with indiscriminately. I've almost always been burned. And there are probably people who feel the same way about me too. Usually when friendships end you start to second guess things like that.

It doesn't really matter anyway. It's all about getting to things early these days. Almost anything that gets popular and ruined has been someone's "secret" for years. And those people probably wouldn't be sharing anything good that would make it to your map anyway.

I don't mean to sound like a bitter asshole, but it's sorta hard when you are one. At least online anyway. Another reason why you can't always go by someone's online alter-ego when trying to figure out who they really are.

All of this is true, I had a spot in Missisippi that I gave out an now it's completely trashed. I'm not sure how I would figure out who is trustworthy; after thinking about this for some time my map will remain private. I'v always loved looking at your photos and I respect how discreet you are with your locations.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. For what it's worth I'm definitely responsible for a handful of places being ruined though. Not that I went and said anything about them, or did anything myself, but just posting a photo of something can be it's downfall. I try much harder than I probably should sometimes, but realistically I can find it anyone can.

an example id like to make (nothing because of you) the theater at a certain state hospital in new england had a bunch of attention recently. An older example is the autopsy theater in a state hospital that is now being turned into federal offices. For the record, a lot of the campus of this hospital is still abandoned.

I definitely feel partially responsible for the first one. Someone commented what state it was in and I didn't remove the comment right away. That paired with the description I gave the photo made it really easy to find. A few loud mouths went after that and it was all over. A ton of people had gone before me, and had been for years. But the Insta crowd hadn't found it yet. If I lived closer I'd have sealed it myself. Its too late now though. Live and learn.

I sorta rode the wave to the second spot you mentioned, and despite being pretty out of character I actually asked a local for info on that. So I wasn't going to make them regret telling me. Got a friend out of that too, so no regrets.

I was in Boston over the weekend and I decided what was left of NSH and that theater weren't with the trip. I went to WSH and a certain power plant and they were well worth it. Either way, I love seeing you on my Flickr feed and those churches you visit are incredible. Keep it up!

Despite the patrols and cameras, there is a wonderful brewery to visit near Tumwater where the patrols are pretty chill and let people go with a warning. Come with nothing that could raise suspicion in the eyes of the patrols. While it was being restored somone lit it on fire

Annnnnnnnnnnnnddd This is why we can't have nice things

I'm going to really try and not repeat anything that has already been said in this thread, but we had a saying about hikes around here that effectively said "If you walk more then six miles into the woods, there's not a person that will give you trouble." (For context, there has been a recent trend of annoying, unprepared foreign tourists coming to the PNW to hike and Ski and it generally kills / commercializes good spots) The truth is, the internet, much like a hike you can drive into and walk for 10 minutes, requires no effort. That inherently attracts lazy, and shitty people. What this site is really good for, or what it should be used for, is getting your crew together, and sharing the pictures of your daring exploits. Urbex should be hard. It should be dangerous. It should be inherently unsafe. It should be an adventure that the stories are told of for years to come. Treasure maps are supposed to be hard to read, not offer turn by turn navigation. Do I want to see your maps? Hell yes I do! But I'd rather meet the man who made it, not walk in to a scrapped out shell. All i can say is there was a time when that brewery had nor cameras nor rotating security patrols, and for that site it's closed to the public entirely because of stupid people. Short of commando inserting yourself with a zodiac from the other side of the river, you're not getting in there unnoticed.

Not too long ago someone asked coordinates for a trivial location I had checked out the day before. They seemed legit so I gave them a map link and, without asking, got a huge .kml file with about a zillion confirmed and potential locations in return.

You never know what kind of collection people are compiling and with whom that will be shared...

I usually only share with People i know or have explored with in the past. Had my fingers burned by people who could not keep it to themselves in the passed which is why majority of my stuff is now offline.

That goes for newbies and experienced explorers. When i did take newbies out to experience used to tell them.

"Hardest thing to gain is trust and easiest to loose"

That applies to all, If given in trust keep it to your damnself !

This is a great idea, I have been collecting locations in California a fair time now. While I am a relatively new member I would be happy to share some locations and talk over email!

I used to be really into the idea of trying to share my finds with the community and creating community maps, and to an extent I believed that the UER Database and other similar maps were a fairly trustworthy resource. I wanted to help the community by adding my finds to the Database, so that my work could help other explorers and leave my mark on the urbex community in a positive way.

Perhaps I was an optimist, or maybe I was just naïve.

The incident with AdventureCrimedisabused me of that notion. Avatar-X's stance on the matter was pretty much "I don't really care, and if you didn't want people stealing your photos and publicly blowing your spots you shouldn't have put them on the Database." Not an exact quote, but close enough. In fact, from my understanding of the situation, the only reason there was any kind of action against AdventureCrime was because the moderator team pushed for it- Av didn't want to do anything at all about it, and when he finally caved he only revoked AdventureCrime's FM status instead of banning him.

It got me thinking. Were all my contributions to the Database just putting my hard work into the hands of untrustworthy people who would sell it for clicks? Why should I entrust my discoveries to a database managed by someone who doesn't care if they get abused? Was I really aiding the community at all, or just giving pins to folks who would ruin them?

I'm still not sure about the answers to those questions, but the fact I had to ask them at all completely sapped any motivation to create new Database entries. I'll update existing ones, but I haven't actually added anything new since that thing with AdventureCrime happened. I'm not sure if I ever will.
