Introducing an American to Exploring in the UK

Some photos from a recent weekend adventure with Sanitarium Sean, who is staying over here in the good old UK until June studying at university.

Of course when I became aware of this it was imperative we organised some kind of exploring trip to break him into exploring in the UK and a trip to the north was hastily put together. As seems to be normal with these trips things didn't really go to plan but on a rainy cold weekend we managed to see four locations in all. Not the most epic locations ever but a good start to ease him into locations over here and what it can be like.

First up was a small scale metal fabrication company which closed around a decade ago. A couple of years back there was a fire in one side of the building which took out an upper storage floor. At the edge of the property was a small collapsing shed full of all manner of old paperwork and promotional materials.

Next up was a historic cotton mill, in an area of the country littered with mills both abandoned and converted or still in use. This large mill has lain empty for years, and sat partially demolished since the economic crash.

Our third location was another mill, which was taken over by a commercial vehicle maintenance company until that too closed. It looked as if the older portion of the mill had been closed a lot longer as the windows were bricked up. It was damp and soggy and a pretty decent wander.

Up until this point things had been pretty straightforward, well all that was about to change when we got into our last location, the former offices for a financial services provider located in the middle of a large city.

As soon as we got in we heard all sorts of loud shouting and after entering ran straight into a group of around seven or eight girls who could have been no older than 13/14, all drinking and smoking. They were scared we were going to stab them or call the police on them but after we assured them we were only going to take photos they were fine. It didn't make them keep the noise down though and after about half an hour, with the racket getting worse, we decided to leave.

There really is only one good part of this large grand building and it's right at street level at the front so we shot that and got out. The rest of the building is a ruined disaster area, stripped and trashed, but despite some graffiti these stunning rooms still remain relatively OK.

So that's where he's been. When we met up he'd told me he was going over to study soon. Neat place and that's a pretty funny encounter!

Gorgeous sites and shoots
So what tortures did the UK hazing involve?
Or is that only for basic members?

12 and 22 are my two favorites and that last location looks incredible. Are those big brown things made entirely out of tile? Or are they wood?

It's all tiling, the whole lot - floor to ceiling, fireplaces and pillars. There's nothing else quite like it in the UK.

Great stuff!! Thanks again for an awesome weekend; couldn't have asked for a better intro to UK exploring, and definitely made some fun memories. The breakfast and Nando's were a nice bonus .

Sadly, I never made it out of the airport the only time I made it onto UK soil (and because I do love you guys, I'm not counting a layover in Heathrow as a "visit" because it would be better described as a "hell," lol). I admit I'm slightly jealous and would love an opportunity to make a proper visit over there!
The photos are awesome. I especially love that woodwork in the last location and the photo with the tree growing through the floor. I love seeing what trees are able to grow through - sometimes it's pretty damn incredible.

I wandered till the stars went dim.
