Vancouver Island - Jordan River Beach Front house

Hey all, I've been exploring on Vancouver Island since i was in high school and I never really took good pictures, I'm no professional photographer and I have a cheap Canon Camera.

Anyways Not sure if this place has been posted, i checked the DB and forums and found nothing.

This house is just one of many abandoned houses in Jordan River.
It's easy to access but very unstable inside; I didn't go to unsafe areas as I was alone.

Jordan river was once a thriving community and has since become almost completely abandoned it was populated by fishermen and miners. Back in 1963 a copper mine flooded causing the salmon (which supported the community) to have 30 times the maximum allowable standard of copper. The town of Jordan river was established sometime around the 1900s its population began an exodus after the aforementioned situation. There is one resident currently living there from what i could pull up and I know that the province has ordered a clean up of the mine in 2016. But nothing has happened yet.

For now these beautiful ocean front homes slowly succumb to the elements and the vandals.

The view as you approach (left side view)

Front entrance

The front yard, used to be a dock here and a ramp, not anymore.

Right side view of house

The front porch on your left

(sorry it's sideways) front porch and balcony on the right.

Inside main entrance, living room?

(through the hole) I believe this is the Family room.

Deck leads out to front balcony

Other side of living room

(ugh side ways..) The door to the kitchen

The kitchen!

(sideways...) The kitchen a bit to the left!

Kitchen Light witht he sexy paint peeling.

Huh wheres this go?

To the bedroom!

had a covered door to the outside in this bedroom

sideways ( window in the hallway to the left of the kitchen showing overgrown back yard!

(sideways) this is to the left of that door just above

The bathroom just off the kitchen

There was no turds in the toilet how odd.

Bathroom ceiling

(sideways) up the stairs in the living room! (had a strange ledge)

(sideways) more stairs

to the left is a Master bedroom

inside the Master bedroom (it was really decayed in here didn't go to that porch This is just above the family room near the strange addition)

Ceiling in the Master bedroom...

Master Bedrooms view.

other side of master bedroom

Second Bedroom on the top floor

(Sideways) Outside second bedrooms doorway

(Sideways) On the wall near second bedrooms entry (how nice)

The strange ledge on the stairs.

Left side of house looking into kitchen

(sideways) Still had connections from power pole.

The two car detached garage

Inside the garage!

There was a basement but its hard to get too and I was alone, and the back yard was severely overgrown.

Sorry for the sideways pictures I corrected them on my PC but when I uploaded them it switched them back....

If there are any people on Vancouver Island who'd like to join me I know about 100-150 abandoned places on the island. (some have been demolished I fear though)

And therein, as the bard would tell us, lies the rub.

Dang! That property is REALLY nice! On the beach! <3

Would be nice to own and build a new house on! Guess it'd be sorta remote and difficult to find work what with the copper situation and all.

Nice find Dimitalus, thanks for sharing

Hey thanks, it is about 2 hours out of the way for me, and if you're not looking you'll miss it! I'm going to go back later, there is about 3 or 4 more abandoned houses there all scattered though. This time I wont take any sideways photos lol

Hey all Dim here,

Just re-uploaded the sideways ones so you're not hurting your brain trying to look at them. It wont let me edit my older post; I have been away for a bit. I have now fixed them, check 'em out below. Enjoy!

Front porch and balcony on the right.

The door to the kitchen

The kitchen a bit to the left!

Window in the hallway to the left of the kitchen showing overgrown back yard!

This is to the left of that door just above

Up the stairs in the living room! (had a strange ledge)

More stairs

To the left is a Master bedroom.

Inside the Master bedroom (it was really decayed in here didn't go to that porch This is just above the family room near the strange addition)

Outside second bedrooms doorway

On the wall near second bedrooms entry (how nice)

Still had connections from power pole.

I did ride past this location last August on my Island trip but ended up checking out the powerhouse and logging camp first, which took quite a bit longer than I expected (the powerhouse is basically an art gallery, could easily kill an hour or more in there just looking at the walls). By the time I made it back to the road to check out the beach house some other explorers had shown up and were inside, I was already running out of daylight so I figured I'd leave them be and check it out next time. Still looking forward to it. I've got a few locations plotted for my next trip already so I'll probably squeeze it in this summer.

That's interesting, I didn't know that, thanks. Must be the Jordan River Diversion Dam that is to blame?

What an amazing place to find an abandonment. I'm so used to only finding abandoned houses down gravel roads on the prairies, this would be a welcome change of scenery. Sucks that so many vandals got to it first though.

Also, thanks for giving us a bit of history on the place! I find you can appreciate a place so much more when you know the reason why it ended up in that state

A couple of comments-

1. House is called "Flattery House", after the last residents.
2. Was owned by WFP, and rented to them.

3. Sorry we messed up the doors & a bunch of windows...
4. The side deck is a bit sketchy. Especially if you are at a mass of ~150 kg or so. (think about it...)
5. The outflow in front should be the one from the mine. (not 100% on that)

JR was not considered a flood plain from the 70's, it was MUCH more recently that BC Hydro looked at the dam above it and realized that it likely will fail in a large earthquake. Lots of info in the Sooke News Mirror about the whole crap match, and what is planned.

This house is not owned by Hydro, they tore down a bunch of houses, fairly quick after BC Hydro had bought them out. This is a CRD owned property.
