I also once found a new roll of toilet paper when I forgot mine at home.

The most valuable find of all if you stopped at Arbys first.

As An urban explorer I total relate to the whole "see but dont take thing" but it seems like anything that is of value ends up in the wrong hands and at this point if we did take something if we value it and treasure it is it a big deal? thoughts please...

There are a lot of bad people that get killed at the hands of other bad people - maybe it's time us good people go ahead and start killing them instead of waiting for it to maybe happen?

Obviously a far stretch, but same style of reasoning when it comes to theft of stuff in these abandonments. Personally I don't take anything out. I think everyone has their own moral compass and a line of right vs wrong.

Legally though I would never want to be caught leaving a location with something from said location on my person. So beyond my moral compass my legal concern says leave everything behind.

Leave it where you found it. There are several reasons why you shouldn't take stuff. Taking stuff from a location...

  • ...denies other explorers the opportunity to see it
  • ...turns a civil trespassing violation into a felony theft/burglary charge
  • ...gives urbex a bad reputation, making things harder for other explorers
  • ...ruins your credibility with other explorers, making them less likely to explore and share information with you
  • ...makes it harder to learn the history of the location, by removing clues
  • ...makes it near impossible to talk your way out of trouble if caught

And these are just the strictly logical reasons why taking from locations is a bad idea. It does't even take into account whether it violates your moral code. I personally believe taking souvenirs, no matter how small, violates the ethics of exploring and thus goes against my moral code, but I recognize that not everyone shares my morals.

What I'm trying to say here is, leave stuff where you found it. It's better in the long run to take nothing but pictures, same as with the wilderness. Part of exploring is accepting a certain moral duty to protect these locations, and stealing from them is the polar opposite of that.

I agree with all these points but make one exception. If a site is under active demo or scheduled for demo within days or weeks the likelihood of items of both historical and monetary value being lost to the rubble is extremely high. Especially things such as old photos, documents, obscure or outdated equipment or devices. I will tend to feel much less guilty removing items in this scenario. I've even (site not disclosed) taken boxes of items from a section of a site that was active demo to a section of site for preservation to save them in the past. It was just old photos and documents but I figured that would be the best outcome and last I checked they were still at their new home. However if it was a total demo they would have come home and been either given away to friends who like that kind of stuff or left like Easter eggs at other locations. Man I need to get back into the game. I miss exploring.

A related question I've often wondered about. Before starting the a demo is the company legally required to do a walk through or anything like that? Something valuable or someone might be in site. Are they liable if a bum is injured or killed?

I think it kinda depends on the demo. Explosives always require a building sweep, but a slow demo with heavy equipment is going to vary.

I have a friend that does explosive demo. They sweep through and lock down a place ahead of time. His company has a strict 'Take Nothing' policy. Not because of the stuff being taken, but because in the past before they had the policy it created issues with guys taking tons of stuff and then putting it in the back of their work trucks.

CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG but my understanding is when a building is being demoed the construction crew takes total control of the property and it is at their discretion if anything needs to be removed ahead of time.

The company is most definitely liable if someone was to get hurt or killed. That is why most demos are well known, alarms ringing ahead of time, final sweeps taking place, etc.

My buddy and I were exploring an abandoned hoarders house and found two $300 bottles of Glenfiddich Special Old Reserve and some Poire Williams (unopened). We were tempted to take but wasn't going to be worth the possible trouble. The house was condemned and full of gross junk that no one would have dug through so I doubt it would be missed. But better safe than sorry. Took pictures tho!

Too bad they can't take anything. I like the rule they used to have at the Franklin mines (where the rocks glow under UV light). Workers can take whatever they can fit in their lunchbox, and they can only collect rocks during lunch break. Of course, this lead to workers putting handles on those two foot long mailboxes and bringing their lunch to work in that.
