Talking to people is a good start In my experience. That said squatters have rights but they're also people who pretty much are in their home and have a basic drive to protect that space. I've found a generically spoken announcement of my intention to just take a few photos of the building and no desire to mess with their space or belongings has worked well. If they seem to not be cool with it I leave because it's their space even if our legitimacy to be there is equal.

Also pepper spray is a lot less likely to be construed as a threat by squatters, security (unless pointed at them) or a property owner. As a often solo female explorer these things have served me well for years!

Good luck and sometimes just walking the building perimeter is the best start!

It seems you have a way.
However you have no idea of who you're dealing with unless you know them well, especially near RR tracks.
While many homeless are descent, some have severe mental issues and may be off their meds.
Some are criminals and may not want to be found.
-Do you have anything worth stealing?-
Some people will steal -whatever- they can.
Keeping distance is the first rule when dealing with hostile people. Distance gives you more time to think and react appropriately.

Best to leave squatters be if you know they're are there beforehand.
Their rights exceed yours; you are in their home.
People are trouble...

Moved to the South Board since youre asking about a location there.

If you need to continue a Bowie knife discussion in the Rookie Board feel free to start a new thread on the Texas Penal Code there.

96 Sam clubs were closed today, there wont be anything left inside not even peeling paint.

96? Man, that number just keeps changing. Not like you could get into them anyways though.

Funny though, they can close all those stores but they raise the Wal-Mart minimum pay to 11.

Oh well.

So true though. It's better just to avoid them if you can. And some of them are just cracked out.

I wouldn't walk into a homeless camp without an invite; same is true with a building where they living.

Depends on what kind of weapon, a registered firearm could still come off as bad.

Do we have to register firearms in America now?

I thought only weapons that fall under the 1934 NFA had to be registered.

Oh I see a "registered" firearm implies its concealed sounds like you know a lot about this stuff

would I have to register it if I carry one openly?

This was what I was going to say. This is one of the few “weapons” that we can have on us in most situations that would be the least likely to cause additional problems. I’ve never had a cop give two shits about my pepper spray. It’s something that might give you that edge you need in those unlikely situations.

It’s kind of amazing to me how often the weapons issue comes up around here be it seems like so much of a no-brainer to me. I would never ever carry a weapon while trespassing. In other words, I would never carry a weapon while intentionally committing a crime, because petty as it may be, it could escalate into a felony in a hurry if you choose to do so. If common sense doesn’t prevail on this issue, I suggest staying home.

Since I don't have full membership, I can't find ANYTHING on here or other sites about the abandoned sams club in vickery meadow. Has this ever been explored? I have been wanting to go for a year or so and every time I see a something that convices me its a bad idea. any tips or information on this place?

I inadvertently strayed off the topic earlier, sorry about that!
In response to the OP:
For what it’s worth, I’ve never explored an abandoned chain grocery store that was even remotely interesting. 99% of the time, the are giant, empty boxes. I wouldn’t invest too much effort into this one if I were you. The architecture is, well, it’s a box. With a parking lot. I’m willing to bet money that Sam’s left absolutely none of their inventory behind, and anything remotely interesting within the infrastructure itself has been heavily scrapped/vandalized/removed. I’d be surprised to so much as a thermostat in there. If you’re lucky, you might see some decent graffiti, but even that’s a stretch.

Sorry to be such a buzzkill, but these kinds of places disappoint me every time! Good luck.

BTW, what part of Dallas are you in? I’m only about 10 miles outside of Dallas city limits.

^^^ This all day long ^^^

Your best defensive weapon is the one carried in between your ears. Most cases I am familiar with the females often have better weapons than male explorers.

Don't bother bringing a weapon. Stealth should always be Plan A, with diplomacy and running away being Plans B and C, respectively. Violence should be a very distant Plan Z, so much so that you shouldn't even plan for it when deciding what to bring. Don't even consider it an option. If things deteriorate that far, there's plenty of makeshift weapons lying around that won't give you a Class A Misdemeanor if caught with them by the cops while exploring.

Stealth has always worked for me, but I've heard plenty of explorers say that it's amazing how far a pack of cigarettes and a McMuffin will get you with the average squatter. Treat them like fellow human beings instead of rabid animals, and things are far more likely to go your way.

well said. i always catch flack for helping them out when i can. Theyre people, long as they arent too strung out, they just want to be warm and full

I never give beggars nothing, not even a light.
Never assume anything.
Muggers 'beg' or ask for this or that to gauge how easy you are; they like easy marks.
They like to get your hand(s) tied up and then they have you; cased and in your face.

You start getting too nice with career criminals you may end up having the worst day of your life.

In 7 years I've only given something to strangers a handful of times. In all cases they never asked for anything but were obviously in a bind.

Here's the Bonnie and Clyde building in Dallas.
You probably can't get in legally or easily but still pretty cool.

In that photo Bonnie is holding a BA(S) Browning Automatic Shotgun. Shortened.

Clyde called them whippet guns I guess because it was easier to whip it out quickly.

They did steal and carry several BARs from the National Guard armory in Ranger Texas.

Hard as this may be to believe, out of the thousands of guns including full auto I have fired, I have not fired a BAR. I have friends that own M16s, XM177s HK MP5s, Thompson SMGs and even an UZI but no BARs.
