Fisher Cat - never heard of it. Thanks for the share. Found some YouTube videos of their cry and such. That would of scared the **** out of me too. Especially since I didn't know until now they existed.

That's pretty cool.
That's an interesting critter you don't hear much about. They are one of the few predators of porcupines.

Are they really?! I never knew that! I've heard stories about them killing small dogs and cats but that's quite an interesting prey for them. They're awfully bold!

They're usually up in MA, NH, ME and Canada I believe. They truly do make a haunting cry.

I had looked them up years ago on wiki, but had forgotten that as well.
Never was far enough north to encounter one plus they aren't a common sight even there... a pretty cool encounter.
There have been two attacks on children over the years, but they just aren't equipped to take out a human. They only attack humans if cornered, like most animals.
Some cougars and maybe bobcats can take out a porcupine too without getting a lethal dose of quills.

A snorting buck in rut at night at close range is unnerving. They do attack and kill adults.
He tailed me for about 30 yards or so.
This one was easily scared off; not something you want to tangle with out on a deserted country road at one in the AM.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

SW US has the venomous Gila monster.
Unless you molest it though it's pretty much a harmless reclusive. Pretty critters.

...

This lizard that I’m thinking of lives in the Australian desert and has a particularly gruesome modus operandi. If I remember correctly, it basically will bite its prey but nothing more. Its mouth is host to all kinds of deadly bacteria and it will simply follow you at a safe distance until you succumb to the infection the creature just bestowed upon you. The process sounds dreadful and typically takes days to play out.

Edit: And now I have to look up what the hell a Fisher Cat is.

Edit: For those of you curious:

And, no, it’s not a cat. It’s a weasel.

I wouldn't call it terrifying, but one of my most memorable animal encounters was earlier this year in a rural abandoned house.

We found three baby raccoons in a plastic tote in one of the upstairs bedrooms. They were quite small and were making loud squeaking noises.
We didn't stick around in that room to long as we figured we would not want to be around when mom returned.

I later spotted mama in the rafters of one of the properties out buildings. Likely hunting for food. She was a big girl!

Similar story... back in July, while shooting the demolition of Lincoln Mall, I ran across a litter of eight, mewing, newborn kittens in one of the stores.

They couldn't have been more than a few days old; I had been in the same space the prior weekend and they weren't there. Fortunately, as they were in the process of gutting the stores in this wing, this was probably the only store in the mall that was yet to have a skid-steer plow through it. It had been walled-off from the mall long ago, and was jam-fucking-packed with forgotten store fixtures from the adjacent department store, so nobody else knew about, or was likely to find them.

Mama kitty did come around a short time, later, but I accidentally spooked her and she never came back for the rest of the time I was there. Having rescued a few litters of kittens in recent years: normally I'd leave them be for mama to relocate them - however with demolition crews working in this area, a friend and I decided their chances weren't good whether we took or left them. We opted for the former... fortunately the South Suburban Humane Society was a few towns over and was able to take them. I followed up with (but never got to see) them on later visits, and was told they all survived and went to good homes.

That's a great story, and a big litter!!

I'm happy you were able to save them and they were all adopted! I would have absolutely done the same. We found three kittens near my cabin this past spring abandoned in the middle of a single lane dirt road in the middle of state land. No houses or cabins around for miles.
They chilled with us for the weekend and I found loving homes for all three within a week!

Hopefully pixiehaven will see this post. Something very similar happened to us at an abandoned hospital, but they were puppies. I can't even begin to imagine where those photos would be, but pixiehaven stepped up and got those pups taken care of. Sadly, one of them didn't make it, but I don't remember why. I think the others were placed into good homes though.

This is terrifying for another reason, rabies.
If more than 6 months has passed you're probably safe...

Anytime you have wound or even suspected skin abrasion, no matter how slight from a bat, get the rabbi vaccine asap.
The closer the wound is to the brain, the more urgent the vaccine. With a head or neck wound you need it within a days. If the vaccine doesn't take, an agonizing death will follow.
Even a slight unnoticed scratch can transmit it if the bat is infected... this has happened.
Error on the side of caution, if there's any doubt get the vaccine.
People stateside still die from rabies and bats are a major transmission vector.

A bat's sonar is precise; anytime a bat flies into you in an open area it should be considered abnormal behavior; one of the symptoms of rabies.

It didn't touch me otherwise I would have been in the emergency room ASAP, I just opened the door and all of a sudden it was like right in my face.

That's good. A while back I was reviewing rabies stats and the particulars of the disease because of a friendly wild skunk that visits me.
In different regions, it's prevalence and the primary vector animals vary. Worth reviewing.

Rabies is a fascinating viral disease. It can infect birds but can't infect their neurons so it's self limiting. Unlike mammals they lack a specific receptor site on their neurons that mammals do have, which it binds to. Cold blooded animals and insects are likewise immune to fatal infections from it.
In humans it generally infects muscles cells and other cells first with no harm, but as soon it infects nerve cells and travels to the brain, illness and death soon follow.

Lol that it so morbid. I oddly find morbid stuff like that interesting though. So if a human being contracts the disease they might not know until its too late? This is good information for anyone into Urban exploring lol

A latency period up to a year is possible but typically 2-6 weeks.
Prevention is the only way; once you have any symptoms ie it has infected the brain, it's too late.
Sometimes the vaccine doesn't take; the longer one waits the more likely it is.
The body needs time to create antibodies to the virus.
It's a horrific disease.

And in some regions... Ebola.

Btw, rabies is one of the very few diseases that has a 100% fatality rate. Not 75% or 99%. 100%.
That puckered me up a little when I read that on the CDC homepage.

Edit:
My bad. Looks like they’ve changed their stats a little; “To date less than 10 documented cases of human survival from clinical rabies have been reported and only two have not had a history of pre- or postexposure prophylaxis.”
Those odds are still pretty shitty.

The good news is, there’s a vaccine. The catch, as you touched upon in your comment, is that once you present symptoms, your pretty much screwed.

Those that did survive were severely crippled.
No full recoveries, ever, without the vaccine.
The closer to the head/neck region as well as the severity of the wounds, the worse the prognosis even with the vaccine.
Anyone who knows they will be potentially exposed should take the vaccine beforehand.
This is one of the most wicked human viruses there is.

Always avoid contact with all mammals, especially if it appears unkept or acts atypically. If bitten or scratched try to capture it dead or alive for brain autopsy. Refrigerate if dead.
I did it once with a stray cat; it was negative... that will teach it to bit the hand that feds it
