New York State Hospitals Under Increased Security *Please Read*

Just want to let everyone know that abandoned hospitals in New York are getting security upgrades. Tiny battery powered motion detectors and trail cams.

Myself and a friend got busted at a state owned asylum back in October. Since then I have heard of another explorer getting busted the same way at a State School.

The asylum we were busted at was completely sealed. After much searching I found a open door on a second floor fire escape. Long story short we were in there maybe a little over a hour when I spotted a cop car outside. There were at least four cars total we saw, we hid and they eventually left. We almost made it off the grounds but got busted by a plain clothes detective heading out to the road, less than 100 yards from our car.

We saw the trail cam on the way in, but did not see the motion detector until our way out. By that time we had already set it off a second time. The motion detector was very small and battery powered. I am assuming it sent out a cell signal alerting police.

Basically it's a trap to catch people, the door was left open on purpose. A very similar thing happened to a guy I know at a former State School.

I have been told by someone with inside knowledge of the NY hospital system that all abandoned state owned hospitals have, or will be getting similar traps put up.

Be careful out there people! I don't want to see what happened to me happen to other explorers!!

Edit: If anyone would like more information on the locations I was talking about in the post please feel free to send me a PM.

I don't know if KPPC would fall under this as it's owned by the Parks Department, but I'm pretty sure they too use open doors as traps. The most popular building there is 93, which I never do because it's basically the place where people go to get caught. There's a huge gaping hole in the back that security drives past a bunch of times every day, yet it's been wide open for like a year. A few months back there were some idiots being loud and throwing things, and I saw a police SUV parked under the trees behind 94.

It's perfect. Keep every other entrance sealed except for this one, which can be observed from a place that's hard to see from the ground and covered from above. Then just wait for someone to leave and roll up on them. Why board it up again for the hundredth time when it's basically a money dispenser?

That was probably us. Not sure if you realize but the place is a huge joke...All depends on how you enter the property too. There's a tunnel system for a reason, use it and you shouldn't have any problems. You aren't missing anything inside 93 anyway, but you are missing the fun we have on the roof.

That sucks.
Eyes wide open, run as soon as you spot it... or whatever.
These systems have their flaws and they will be eventually exploited I suspect.
How many sensors are the willing to replace with no busts?
Getting the make and model number will help you determine work arounds.
The cops lag time gives you escape time and that is one of the system's greatest weaknesses.
Exploit it or avoid it.

These are not high value assets so we'll see how much effort and resources they are willing to waste here.

From what I was told it's hospitals owned by the state itself, the parks department may be a separate entity. Building 93 isn't worth getting busted for anyway.

The place I got busted was sealed tight, save for a few half broken windows on a second floor. They could have easily just locked this door. Instead they feel the need to waste money and manpower setting up a trap.

Keep in mind this will only apply to buildings that are very well sealed on all floors. Broken out windows allow birds and other manner or wildlife inside, leading to frequent false alarms on motion sensors.

Unfortunately we were a bit naive on the existence of such small battery powered motion detectors. Since we knew the place did not have power we figured alarms wouldn't be a issue. My friend wanted to bail when we spotted the trail cam, but I talked him into going in. A mistake I will not make a second time.

The sensor was extremely small. Under 6 inches in all dimensions. White plastic with a black window where the sensor was. No identifying markings that I saw.

Response time here is quite quick as there are still active buildings on campus. First cop car I saw was the campus police. Troopers and detectives showed up shortly after. The detective who booked me in, took my statement etc. claimed the sensors were put in because scrappers had stole $1 million in scrap in 2012. Which is complete BS. We saw no signs of scrapping inside and getting any more than a handful of scrap out of that complex would be extremely difficult.

trail cams have come down in price and so many people are using them in security capacities... a couple of places here that have been abandoned for decades, their new owners are using them to cover POE and the lots/streets close by. They're more reliable than the systems they were using.

A common place for scrappers to hit are the steam tunnels if they have copper return lines.
That's what happened at Pennhurst.
Yes, that will really piss them off... as it destroys the heat system and if asbestos was used causes a huge clean up mess.
I got free rein at Pennhurst by tagging the another scrapper there that destroyed the copula.
He ruined my shoot, so... even got pics of his truck's vin number and many of him stripping the copper cladding.
After that the state police let me roam there as I pleased until the new asshole owners took control.

Do any trail cams have the ability to send photos in real time to a persons cell phone? I am not to worried about someone seeing a photo of me days or weeks later when they come to check the cam. But if they can see what's going on in real time, now that's rather worrying.

Tunnels have been flooded at this location for years, so that's unlikely.

Awesome story about your scrapper encounter though!! I got a kick out of that!

I still have the images. What really pissed me was I was there specificly to shoot the copula that day. Except I wanted it intact
The wood forming molds are long gone; no way to restore it and worse it left the center of the building open to the elements.
Over $100k of damage in under an hour.
Wanted some sunset shots of it... never more.

There maybe other things they're after depending what's there. Its state property...
Arson is another real concern.

I know 2x beat me to it, but where I used to work, I worked with guys who were avid deer hunters. They had trail cams all over their hunting leases and anytime something went by it, it sent a message to their phone with the picture of whatever went by it. And this was five years ago, so the tech has probably gotten far more reliable and widespread.

They've started using similar things at a few higher profile location in the UK as well, except they mount the cameras inside the regular looking motion-detector alarms that are normally found in the top corners of rooms or above doors.

When I was in Scotland I encountered a hospital with a large network of motion alarms covering the whole outside of the building, we only noticed the purple boxes fixed to the walls at knee height when we'd walked past two, and the alarm only trips when you trigger a third one to avoid false alarms from wildlife etc. As soon as the alarm went off we headed out the way we'd came in as it was in a residential area early in the morning to wanted to avoid any awkwardness (lol), and as soon as we stepped off the property the alarms stopped. So we were 100% being monitored from somewhere off site via cameras.

Yes I know a guy that owns property in middle TN. He uses spypoint cameras and they hit his phone up immediately and then he calls police. He is a hundred or so miles away.

NSH had that for a while too. Cameras were motion detected and the state police had a program on their computers in the cars that would go off when one was triggered. Then they just had to show up and wait for the kids to leave or be idiots walking around in the daylight like they owned the place.

I should have figured with the rapid advances in subservience technology this sort of thing would trickle down to abandoned buildings. I guess I will have to be much more vigilant in the future.

This time of year, ten years ago we went to have a Christmas Party in 93 with about 30 people.

Park Police were on us like a cheap suit. We ended up locking ourselves in a room on the 10th floor. The cops tried the door and couldn't get it open and they eventually left.

We went in and out through the steam tunnels. IDK there's so much garbage in that room where you come up out of the elevator shaft that they could have easily hid a motion sensor in there.

KPPC is like the "Ron Jeremy of UE". The only thing impressive is the size.

I know a couple of public schools in Detroit have motion activated cameras. Every time one is activated the footage is sent straight to DPS and they will check it out. That being said, people taking photos aren't a problem. Scrappers ripping apart the building are.

I believe all properties in Detroit that have been sealed up by VPS (Vacant Properties Services) have motion alarms inside and cameras. However these buildings are sealed exceptionally well and it would take one very determined individual to get inside in the first place.

That is a smart cam. In this case it's programmed to send a real time alert. It may be a very primitive one that merely detects motion but can't discern targets although the vid recording let's the operator do so.
They can be single units or more commonly multiple cams linked together to form a network many times with overlapping coverage zones.

Smart cams can be completely hidden such as what appears to be a broken street light. I encountered one of these networks in Chester in 2004, it was FBI operated. Completely undetectable for all practical purposes. They are always fixed position cams and some equipped with telephoto lens/high resolution cams can watch from a 1000 yards away. Typically their range is much less and use cheaper multiple cams that may have overlapping coverage as well as low light capabilities.
Sophisticated networks like this one, acquire you by facial recognition, clothing, ethic group, gleans/IDs car tag number/make/model/year and will then track and record you throughout its network range. Perimeter zones can be set for specific areas; anything within its cams view.
It can it program to look for specific people, cars, bikes, or even specific actions such as leaving a box on a street corner or as simple as a zone breach by a human.
It can be programmed to look for a black man riding a red bike for instance; any target fitting these parameters will (hopefully) be acquired.
They have glitches but the better systems with good layout and programming are devastatingly accurate.

Once a perimeter zone is breached and/or a specific target or actions are met the computer will complete it's preprogrammed response. It could be a real time alert to a live agent, or say a logged note for latter review with all associated cam recordings neatly attached to that file.

These systems have been in private use for at least 10 years and are becoming more common. Airports, active military bases, major highways/critical bridges, 911 hot zones, high crime areas, Federal installations, oilfields, pipelines/tank storage, petro/chemical plants, large metro areas, subways are places were they are frequently used.
The ones operated by the feds are some of the most sophisticated and modern...

Do you have a photo drivers license?
They already have your facial parameters... a person's walking gait as a way to ID and acquire/track them is also a technique the advanced systems can use.
Wide brim hats and baseball caps offer some protection. The pupil to pupil/nose measurement is a critical parameter for facial ID. Ear shapes are unique markers as well.

Yes, well... I warned you.
Especially with the feds don't expect them to tell you how they tagged you if you run afoul in one of their networks.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
