| | | Spent the last 4 days on a Harley Davidson sampling what the southern Pacific Southwest has to offer in what we Canadians consider near-perfect riding weather. My father, my uncle, and I spent each night in Vegas, leaving in one direction at sunrise and returning from another at sundown each day. Some of my favorite places to explore in the Pacific Northwest are the unusual desert canyons that we have up here in BC (South Chilcotin, Thompson, and Okanagan regions), so getting to experience that sort of landscape on a far grander scale was an awesome experience and I look forward to returning as soon as I can. There is so much out there to see, 4 days passed by in the blink of an eye and I'm already eager to return. Anyway, I'm sure many of you are already familiar these locations since they're not very far off the beaten path, but here's an update from a foreigner. EDIT: I'll be squeezing each location into this thread in parts to avoid cluttering the board. Part I: Rhyolite, Nevada - Built: 1904 | Abandoned: 1916 Ghost towns are plentiful here in British Columbia but Rhyolite was unlike anything I've seen up here. In BC ghost towns from the gold rush era very rarely consist of anything more than a handful of wooden buildings and log cabins, the tall stone buildings in Rhyolite are much more advanced than what Canadians were working with around the same time, evident in the fact that they are still standing today, whereas most of the historical buildings in our ghost towns have long burned to ground. The small rancher ruins on the way into Rhyolite are more reflective of what most of our remaining ghost towns in British Columbia look like today: Just as we were leaving town to continue on a Camaro showed up and put on a bit of a show for us. Not something we were expecting to see in a ghost town on the edge of Death Valley in December.

| | | Posted by Abby Normal Looks like you hit some good spots out of Vegas. Did you eat at the Crow Bar in Shoshone? It's a favorite of those that like to ride out there. Sometimes we stop there for a meal when we're out mine exploring as well. It's been a few years since I was there. You had some great light up in Rhyolite! The set turned out great. If you get back here, another good ride is down south to Oatman. It's more of a living ghost town. A bit touristy, but still a good day. It's right on old Route 66 so that's kind of neat too. Thanks for sharing the pics! Abby Normal

I saw Crowbar across the street from the gas station when we were fueling up in Shoshone and wished that we had saved our appetite, unfortunately we ate on the way out of Vegas that morning. I will without a doubt return to Death Valley next year at some point (probably in the cooler months again), rent a more capable bike for the terrain, and start working my way further out into the mountains. I'm still really eager to check out Harrisburg, Cerro Gordo, Ballarat, Keeler, Skidoo, Keane Wonder Mine, Journigan's Mill, and a few other less notable spots here and there. It's such a great contrast to the land that I'm used to. Oatman looks interesting too, Arizona is uncharted territory for me right now but I'd love to get out there as well.
