That partial breakthrough is the space that ran under wharf street, a newspaper article much earlier in the thread refers to it. The garbage bins from the wharfside eatery (called the docks now?) are also connected or were at one point. Darcy's is in the old Rithet Insurance company building and rumour has it the bedrock tunnels were all connected back in the day when men had various reasons for making sure the gold that came and went wasn't noticed above ground-but there's another much longer story with all that. Lots of parts have been filled in but the tunnel used to run all under wharf street from custom house to several locations-if you could get in there you'd probably find all the telephone poles they stuffed in there when they re did Bastion square. Broad street spaces are the storage sheds for the businesses that extended out under the side walks, some were connected and others blocked off. Also in that area under the bcha manhole covers the spaces are all connected by walkable conduits though some have been separated by concrete so you can't walk continuously anymore, they go up to City hall and run down Fisgard and Johnson as well. For a real trip, take a dip down the old manholes near Market square-the old ravine is still there. Sometimes I wish I was born a bit earlier and could've explored all the underground spaces back in the seventies before anyone really noticed or had tried to hide or deny them yet.

How do you know that tunnel actually runs along Wharf St?

I know that seems like the obvious route, and I'm not necessarily saying it doesn't, but do you actually know that it does?

The newspaper article you're referring to doesn't say anything about it. The spot where they found it is quite a bit north of the custom's house, and there's no obvious reason to suspect that they were connected.

Do you have any other sources?

Well I'm not just going to blurt it out, but ask the guy who started this thread if there used to be a tunnel that runs all down wharf street to store street. As well, some older street people and some older city workers have told me many things and I've also done some 'splorin when the time has been right-you know-late at night. I mean you should know-you've got some of the best pics on here. You've even been in the legendary tomb of the rat. On a side note-too bad about the langford cave-progress has a way of destroying natural beauty.

Not trying to argue, but blurt out what? I don't know of anyone that's been in there, including KK. I'm also not aware of any photos, maps, plans, etc that would definitely say what or where it is.

The only thing I know for sure is that there is something under Wharf St directly across from where the HBC warehouse was. I have no idea how far it runs, or where, if anywhere.

Just to summarize, this is all I can say about it without getting into speculation:
- an old issue of The Beaver (HBC magazine) mentions an "escape tunnel" being build as part of the former HBC warehouse
- there's a bricked-over arch at the basement level wall that remains of that warehouse, facing Wharf St
- someone broke through the wall at the southern edge of the warehouse into what appears to be a tunnel (or room) under Wharf St
- Wharf St has effectively never changed, it was not "built-up over the years"

I haven't found any interesting manholes on Wharf between Fort and Yates. I would guess that there aren't any, and "the tunnel" is only accessible through buildings, if at all.

If you've done some exploring and you have other, first-hand information to add, please do.

Also if anyone works at Darcy's, please get a UER account

Nice.

So you can definitively say that there is a tunnel under Wharf, that it is accessible through a building, and that you have been in it?

Cool, filing this under "guy that read about a guy that knows a guy that heard about a thing".

I think this thread more interesting when people are making an honest attempt to share information, no matter how significant, rather than of vagueposting to try to get back at someone for not giving you details on The Tunnel.

Good luck with your full membership application.

It's because of your approach why I won't say more. I've actually never read that Beaverton article you mentioned, I'm honestly not much of a researcher and don't have time for this hobby much anymore, but I had some jobs back in the day and what can I say? Access is a wonderful thing. Anyway, you like drains not tunnels. What's that old saying about catching flies?

On a similar note, many of these underground routes were used to smuggle liquor while prohibition was in effect. Before the city started to really develop and change many of the underground spaces were more easily accessible. Nowadays, other than drains, most spaces have been segmented, filled in or closed off to access. The early explorers in this thread were brave, well intentioned, smart and successful but also lucky-and yet....20 years late to have been able to venture through all the connected spaces with ease. Nevertheless, the city still holds many secrets. Will the city ever acknowledge these tunnels and open them up? My guess is-not a chance in hell. Happy exploring everyone, stay safe and be cool.

Didn't have time to take a pic but they were doing some "construction" under Yates today near the Scotiabank-had a nice long look into a large conduit space under the sidewalk. Had to crouch to get a long view but didn't see any end in sight in either direction. Bit of a public spot to open up but maybe late at night/early in the morning-might be worth a trip. Anyone know how to hide a 12 ft. extension ladder under your coat;)?

Well they sure filled that space up with concrete and styro-one more tunnel gone or blocked and segmented to prevent access. How long will it be before all of the underground spaces are filled in? ah well, progress.

There's the one that leads to the garbage area from the place that used to be wharf st and another partial one from Darcy's, maybe they were connected at one point. And yes there's that one that's basically all filled in near the parking lot. But there was a complete section over 20 years ago. There's still more no one has photographed or posted photographs of yet but people don't want to reveal them for obvious reasons.

Oh nice, and it's not the Catawumpus garbage thing? Any more details on direction or material?

Haven't been here in a while. Noticed a few months ago that Ross Bay has been sealed, is it the same for the Burrow?

Nope, it's doing fine, and they've done a good job attaching the new pipe to the old stone outfall.

Thanks!

That's a cool project, but I really wish we got a bit more out of it. I had dreams of being able to cross the harbour on foot, but I'm probably not going to be crawling through a 1200mm underwater sewage main anytime soon.

That's not to say that there's nothing interesting in this project though
