There was the time i opened a door only to unleash complete chaos. What had a second before been a dead quiet building was suddenly full of movement and loud noises coming from every direction. It took me a few seconds to realize i'd scared the crap out of a huge flock of pigeons that had decided to live there.

That, or the time i was on the third floor of an abandoned military barrack, looked out the window and saw a mountain lion wandering around the base of the building i was in. A building with one entrance/exit, and an open gap where the door used to be.

I was exploring the old sheds on my Uncle's farm as a kid and almost stepped on a venomous king brown snake.

The bastard was curled up under the bottom step at the entrance to an old shearing shed. I reckon I missed stepping on him by about a centimeter.

He moved and hissed but didn't bite thank christ.

Later my uncle killed him with a shovel.

As a electric meter data collector I had master keys, gate codes and full permission to go on posted private property without asking.
I was on a large ranch and had driven for a mile without seeing anyone capturing meter data.
One meter was by these large "tiger" cages about 8 or 9 feet high.
Very sturdy.
WTF?
I got an uneasily feeling...
it was quiet, too quiet.
When I reached the rear gate I saw this...

The first time I saw an eastern dobsonfly, I thought that our wayward and wanton behavior had somehow torn a rift in the veil that separates our reality from other more horrifying dimensions.

I actually asked this bug what it wanted from us:

Weren't you worried about being shot or something? I mean, some people will shoot and then ask for your ID.

I did this hundreds of times... in Texas.
If I see someone I make contact otherwise it was too time consuming.
In a marked company 4x4 pickup with company T shirt and ID.
The people are used to meter readers to begin with and know not to mess with them.
Dogs every now and then, but I almost always gained access.

A suspected meth house (and lots of people) and a couple of illegally jumped meters were a bit sketchy.
Goats (harmless), sheep, long horns, donkeys, horses, and a few other odds and ends. It was interesting.
Most animals and people are easy to deal with if you do it right. With animals you need to watch their body language especially horses and dogs.
The ostrich thing was unnerving; they're dangerous and known for their bad tempers.
Never saw even a dog there though.

Social engineering...

And almost all dogs just want to be your pal; it's bred into them. I also always carried dog treats; much more effective than pepper spray. Generally I only gave those to the good dogs; the mean ones went hungry
Abused dogs are the worst; I pulled my knife on one that charged me and was trying to keep me from latching a gate closed (denying him access to me). As soon as I flipped the knife open, he ran.
As I was leaving I tried to get his picture but found he distrusted any object in my hand.
Latter I found out he had been abused by a previous owner and was bonded only to his current one. He was very mean.
I was never bit. One coworker was nailed twice in one week. Bad technique.

This guy greeted me with a Frisbee; a good sign.

This guy followed my truck for at least a mile around the ranch at a good clip.
Never barked once.
His reward was a burrito.

A very big dog came out to greet me at this ranch... she was friendly.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Excellent post Blackhawk, somebody commented once on UER that theres no bad dogs just bad owners. To a large degree its true. Unless you run into the one in a hundred that has some genetic wires crossed most aggressive dog behavior comes as a result of past human interaction. This 1% problem usually ends up taking care of itself. They either chase a moving truck and try to bite the tires, or they chase a rancher's calves, something those guys wont let slide out here.

When I moved to the country 5 years ago I didn't expect to see the numbers of "feral" dogs that I have. Dogs that have basically been left to run loose fend for themselves they are as wild as coyotes and generally run off when they see humans.

Im sure you already know this but Ive had good luck just reaching for the ground as if to pick up a rock. They seem to know what that means. If they don't then I actually pick up a rock and teach them!

Good dog "street photography" btw I hope you tossed that Frisbee for that little fellow.

Yes, we played a long game of Frisbee catch and of coarse some doggy treats

Abused dogs are frequently hit with objects; most know what an object in your hand means.
I've pulled my knife twice on dogs. The other time was with two pits running in the street, that then headed directly for me late at night.
They hear the click as it locks in place; that seems to unnerved them as well. They ran away.
It's the little things sometimes.
The key moment with animals is keeping them from attacking; it saves time and blood.
Fear with any animal is always counter productive.
They can sense it. Anger is much more useful.
Use anger only if it's needed with dogs; most just want to be your pal

The Story of Bob Barker

This pit bull picture below was a bit terrifying at first. As is my habit I was parked for the night along a deserted stretch of road in the desert.
As soon as I got out of the van a large dog started barking unseen in the darkness from about 20 feet away. He didn't sound friendly at all... I was yelling and cursing at him, had the walking stick out. I was pissed. Finally he stopped.
Figured that was the end of it.
No.
When I got up in the morning and walked around to my driver door, there he was laying right under it blocking my way, looking at me.
I sized him up; he was lean, with some cuts from obviously living in the desert.
He was in trouble, someone had abandoned him out in the desert miles from anyone. Estimated he been there for at least a week. Gave him close to a gallon of water. He lapped it up so fast I thought he get sick. It was July and it was very hot during the day.
I left him to go into town feeling bad but really couldn't take him.
Asked a friend I knew if anyone wanted a good looking, friendly brindled pit bull.
He decided to take him.
I went back... and Bob was gone.
I found him under an overpass taking shelter from the sun about a eighth mile away. He let me put a crude lease on him and I walked him back to the van. He even obeyed commands to heel and sit!
More water.
My friend's had him for almost 3 years now.
Bob Barker turned out to be a great dog, and now has a good home

We're having this thing here where the provincial government is trying to ban pitbulls. Instead of tackling bad owners, they ban the breed.

A couple months ago I was on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a kirkbride hospital and I kneeled down to read a scrap of paper on the floor. Then I heard what sounded like a cat skidding across the floor. I looked up and there was literally a little red fox running passed me like 2 feet from my face. He rounded the corner and I never saw him again. I hope he's okay.

Because of their very strong jaw structure they can inflict a lot of damage...
but...
I've personally played and roughed housed with a rescued fighting American pitbull numerous times.
Happy dog would growl and bite, but never break the skin no matter how worked up you got him.

He had been shot twice, and had a broken front leg when police rescued him and turned him over to the SPCA.
However since he was a fighting dog he was to be put down after he was treated by a vet(what sense does that make?).
My friend work at that vet and they told the SPCA he died during surgery.
She took him home.
To spite all the abuse he been given before, he was a good pup.
He was deathly scared of thunder and had a few other quarks as a result of his abuse, but never tried to bite anyone after being saved.
His sleeping blanket in his crate was however very abused by his lustful passions... it had numerous holes in it

It wasnt what I would call terrifying but it certainly did stop my heart for a moment. Another member and myself were exploring an old farmhouse, we had to walk down a very long dirt road then through a gate and a large front yard to get to the house. Once we got into the yard I decided I needed to make a nature call before gong much further. The best place looked to be a shell of a rock garage off the the side of the property. I headed that way, everything seemed fine until I got to the corner of the garage then suddenly a pack of dogs (seven to be exact)came charging towards me barking and growling. I was just getting over a broken leg so running was out of the question all I could do was stop in my tracks and hope they werent hungry. Fortunately once I stopped so did they, they then proceeded to slowly move closer still barking. I of course backed out as they moved forward. I began to realize that it wasnt their intent to attack (thank God) they just wanted us off they're property. We were happy to oblige. As soon as we were back outside the gate they went back to they're hideaway in some brush and we went on our merry way.

I was the "other explorer" on this one.
I actually told this story here:
http://www.uer.ca/...page=17&pp#post338
I never mentioned the part where I sprinted a good 1/3 or 1/2 mile or so right after that dog encounter when I saw a tow truck pull up behind our cars. That could have been more traumatic than the dogs were, but fortunately he was gone by the time I (barely) made it over there, lol. I never would have thought I still had the half mile sprint still in me, but I guess we got lucky twice!

My very first Urbex was this concrete structure in the woods that's used by the homeless to escape the heat and camp out. Came upon an obvious campsite they use, and once I noticed the sleeping bags and such, a giant vulture decided to take off and I could've sworn some crackhead was charging at me with a heroin filled needle or something.

I decided to hike back to the car after that.

I have a new feral kitten...

What really made me giggle nervously is when she walked over to me, and stood directly under my legs.
I saw her before walking around right next to 2 feral cats I feed... just one of the boys.
However last night she proved to be the friendliest of the group.
Swell... skunks seem to like me.

Never have been sprayed in spite of several very close encounters with them, all at night.
None ever stumped or threatened me.
You have to try pretty hard to get nailed by one.
I saw one girl I didn't like get so close to being doused it was hilarious, she even ignoring the skunk's warning stumps.
She though she was Stevie Irwin... good thing they tend to be very tolerant... I guess

If they have kits with them, be careful.
Dogs tend to agitate them too, otherwise they are pretty chilly little critters.

Coyotes are just like bears if you act crazy enough and loud enough they'll just avoid you. I haven't had any really bad encounters. We have the usual spiders (black widows, brown recluse), snakes, wild dogs/cats.

I do, however, know someone who stumbled upon an abandonment where a cane corso and rotti decided to live. Phew.

I was heading to a place this past summer which required a short walk through some woods and then a walk down a fairly steep hill in some long grass (over waist high for me). It was pre-dawn and the ground was a bit wet. I got to top of a hill and heard a weird snorting noise so I froze. It didn't sound human but I also couldn't see anything. I made some noises and nothing moved.

Just as I went to take my next step, a deer pulled this tigger jump out from the grass fairly close to me and scared me enough that I slipped and promptly fell down the hill. The deer happily ran up the hill and then stood there looking down at me as if to say "hahahah"!!

Probably falls more into the "most ridiculous category" but we don't have a lot of scary animals where I live.
