Alright first off I'd like to apologize for the quality of the following pictures. In my defense I was trying to quickly get the shots and GTFO because we started to hear other people walking around the place. From what I gather this was an old aluminum scrap/recycling place where they converted the scrap into useful metals. There were many kinds of chemicals which I assume were used to create different alloys? Nevertheless, this was a really cool old building and it still had some interesting stuff left behind.

17. This is the oldest paper I could find. Dated November 17, 1954.

Unfortunately this awesome find wasn't without it's consequence. We managed to get a few blocks and were caught by the police while looking at a possible POE for another abandoned building. Silver lining: None of us were charged. Although we were extensively educated on how big of dumbasses we are.

well lucky for you, I am a scientist. LOL.

So, what I see is a photo or QC lab in 9. There is a glass vacuum dispenser of 1.0 Normal Sodium Hydroxide - a strong, very versatile base. I can't read the other labels, other than the Kodak Developer which can be used in X ray photography. If this place was a metal manufacturer, my educated guess is this was a QC lab of some sort to ensure the right alloy of metal was produced by using X ray industrial radiography.

Don't touch those chemicals bare handed - VERY CORROSIVE. Its concerning no one cleaned them up. I might contact your local state Environmental Protection Division and just send in an anonymous heads up. Doesn't look like a lot of chemicals, but OSHA wouldn't like to see them stored like that. Like I said, I can't read any of the other labels, but they very well could be incompatible chemicals and those rubber stoppers are probably total crap by now. Stay well clear of those, even fumes can knock you out in the wrong combination.

That's my best guess. I'm a microbiologist though, maybe a chemist or such wants to chime in.

I ALWAYS LOVE science finds. I totally love those pics!! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's really interesting. We didn't dare touch any of that stuff because it seemed pretty gnarly, especially after sitting for 60 years the rubber tools had definitely seen better days.. Glad to share, thanks for the info.

I love it when 1footinthegrave drops the necessary science to contextualize some of these finds.

Looks like a nice industrial spot, labs and chemicals are always a fun find/shoot, and it looks nice and old too.

Glad you guys got off with a warning, curious to know more though if you're willing to share. Was he watching the building you guys were trying to get in or did he randomly drive by? Did someone see you guys and call the police?

Well, we're not exactly sure if someone spilled the beans or what. The other building was about a block away and we were just checking it out from the sidewalk. I pushed the front door just to see what would happen-not the best idea now that I think about it-but it was locked. 30 seconds later a police cruiser pulls up...then another...then two more. It was at this point that I was informed that nobody (except for me) had their ID on them. Great. We were given the whole spiel that we could be charged for felony burglary, criminal trespass, etc etc. At that point we'd pretty much accepted that we were gonna be taking a nice ride in the back of a police car.

However, after all the questioning eventually I guess he'd figured out that we were just stupid teenagers. And like that we were off with a verbal warning.

Two things I learned that day:
-Being honest with the police goes a long way
-Exploring old buildings 0.5 miles from the police station isn't the best idea.

This was a first.

That brown liquid looks a lot like concentrated nitric acid.
You can do wonderful things with it... luckily your strong sploring ethics keep these high velocity thoughts from ever entering your mind

If you do go back, do not get caught as you have been verbally warned and a incident report was probably filed.
Next time they likely will bust you.
There may have been a silent alarm or a cam(s) you didn't stop; be careful.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Thanks!

Nitric Acid eh? High velocity thoughts indeed.
That place is risky business now, too close to the police station. Time to find some locations out in the boonies.

A silent alarm or cams..now that's a scary thought!

If a cop was rolling up on you within a minute of you pushing on a locked door I'm guessing the building was being watched by him. it's very probable if so that the building might be alarmed in some way if you were to get in.

That's a solid assumption. I'd hardly think that a building as dilapidated as that one would have an alarm system, methinks it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The local bar and the not-so-nice neighborhood nearby was definitely and attributing factor for us.. I'm just glad we got what we wanted out of the other building because that town has been taking quite active measures to remove abandoned buildings as of late.

BWHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! Ya telling me I'm one of *those* people? The annoying "know it all's"? LOL.

Guilty, but NOT of knowing it all. Guilty of having a NEED to drop science everywhere. It's in my DNA ( <- SEE? SCIENCE!!!!! )
