this might be a bit too off-topic from urbex, but has anyone else tried databending photos they've taken?

databending is the modification of media saved in a certain format using an editor designed for a different format, software bugs, or a hex editor.
for example, my databent images are modified by importing uncompressed images into Audacity and applying audio filters to them before exporting them as uncompressed data again.

I don't know much at all about audio engineering; most of this is just produced with a lot of trial & error.

if anyone else has any examples they've made, I'd love to see them!

That's a very interesting process, and completely new to me.

Here's my try (took a lot of trail and error). For some reason I lost all color information and got a 3x3 grid.

That is pretty wild! Nothing like a lesson in digital information. Guess everything really is just 1s and 0s.

oh my gosh, I've never seen an image get duplicated like that. it's really cool! trial & error is pretty much the name of the game, I figure ^^

This concept is really cool. For the last couple hours I've been messing around with it. I'm not very good at it. Any tips?

I can't really say that I'm "good" at it, either ^^'

it really is just a lot of trial & error, and taking note of what audio filter does what (assuming you're indeed using an audio tool to edit your photo). like, I've managed to figure out that the phaser filter can consistently produce the lines and discoloration that you can see in my first, third and fourth pictures, and increasing the LFO Frequency (not sure what LFO stands for) on the phaser increases the frequency of the lines.
there're also a lot of effects you can get just from tinkering with equalization, so I'd definitely experiment with that.

I do really like what you posted, though! they're kinda tucked in the back but I actually think that the trees specifically look really cool, with the sharp gradient from green to blue to violet.

This is really cool! I'm glad you posted this. I just have to figure out how to do it.

LFO is low frequency oscillation. It's all about heavy bass frequencies. I could see how that would mess with things. Pretty cool!

A bit of improvement I think, but I've been having a bit of trouble with Audacity, whenever I use any filter except echo Windows Pictures (I've also tried other programs) it doesn't want acknowledge it as a picture. Any ideas on why that's happening?

be sure that you don't touch the "header" data in the first few seconds of data! I'll usually apply one filter across all of the data except for the first few seconds, view the result to see how close the effect gets to the bottom of the image (and if it appears at all), and just keep nudging the selection area about until the image reads and the effect gets very close to the bottom. I usually crop out the very bottom of my finished images. my girlfriend knows how to determine the exact length of the header data from the file size, but I'm not quite sure how she manages it.

if anyone is unsure of how to go about this or is having trouble getting any viable results, I recommend a proper tutorial like this (I basically follow it to the letter, except I use A-Law instead of U-Law)

did a very quick & dirty databend on a shot I got from a recent exploration. it was just a high-pass filter and some reverb (if I'm remembering right, I forget these things a lot) over the whole image, but I like how the colors turned out.

Now this is really cool, definitely will have to try this. I've been using Audacity for awhile and never even knew this was possible. Thanks for sharing.
