Getting down a hidden tunnel entrance

So I just came across this hole in the woods that likely is the entrance to some tunnel system. I'm planning on coming back to it to explore it one day but I'm wondering what the best method of getting down it would be. I'm nervous about tying a rope around a bunch of trees and rocks because I don't want people messing with it. That would be BAD.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Here's a pic of the entrance, it's not super helpful but it's all I got.

Look around the woods more, bring a crowbar or something that will pull up a lid.

If that's what I think it is, there's a much less sketchy option relatively nearby.

There is, but it's a door that seems pretty locked down and I'm not always one to bash my way into things. We'll see though, I'll most likely go back to the spot and look around more.

I usually will go to place like that with a few people. One lucky person get picked for staying top side. For one if something happen, you have someone that can call for help. That person make sure no one tampers with your ropes while your bellow. Also for one place we got into we moved a plate, leaving a 40' drop exposed. So then your buddy make sure no one falls in.

Also, be careful of air quality. If there's poor air circulation down there, decaying organic matter such as fallen leaves can create pockets of toxic gas or low oxygen zones. Make sure to keep that in mind when exploring a confined space.

If so, once you're in it, it will be too late...

Confined spaces are no playground. They can be - and generally are - very dangerous. Regulations in that area are more or less written in blood, I'll leave an example study from NIOSH. https://www.cdc.go...03/pdfs/94-103.pdf

Never go alone, as others have said, keep someone up top to call for help if need be; if you pass out or hit a reception dead zone you're fucked without someone topside. Bring water and extra batteries for flashlights. Don't lower yourself down with a rope/rappel unless you're trained to do so/with someone that knows what you're doing. Watch out for confined spaces and also for drops longer than your rope.
