Since I started exploring I have been very cautious around windows and roofs. Since most of the locations I explore are in the city there are people passing by very frequently. I avoid rooftops and windows because I am afraid someone might see me and call the police. Am I being paranoid or prudent?

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

I also usually avoid windows and rooftops if I'm exploring a place surrounded by active things during the day. I once was climbing a set of stairs to get onto a roof of an abandoned building in the evening and a lady saw me.
I think it's good to be careful

I usually assume if I'm on a roof or at a window, I will see people before they see me. There are times I'll be careful around one side of a building, but I'd rather look out windows and roofs carefully to see if I've been seen.

People are trouble.
View from windows are far back in the room as possible when being spotted be a problem.
People tend not to look up.
People can sense when an eye is upon them; if your in their peripheral vision, you can be spotted by them.

I love rooftops, like my favorite part of getting into a building is getting onto the roof. I just do those expeditions at like 2-4am when I can and duck/hide if I see lights coming. But honestly most people won't see shit on rooftops if it's dark out, especially if you turn your face away. Unless you're like a clear silhouette against empty sky, you're usually fine.

I have been to a couple of locations where the only way to move between places was over a roof. In one situation there was a roof that formed a wall of an enclosed courtyard, so I only had to deal with exposure on one side, and that side didn't face a road. As long as the roof isn't structurally unsound, and you don't happen to cross at the exact moment security drives by (not that the guy was going to do anything), roofs are generally fine.

The greatest risk I've encountered on a roof were broken slate tiles, which could break free and send you sliding down and off the edge of the roof like some kind of really un-fun skateboard. I've also encountered some roofs with copper undercladding which is absurdly loud to walk across, and requires very careful foot placement in order to avoid drawing unwanted attention.

New to rooftopping, security questions

I just moved to a new city and have taken to long walks at night. I live in the center of the city so there's not much to explore here. Last night I decided I would start rooftopping, it's something I always thought about just never acted on. So tonight I went to a hotel took the elevator to the 3rd to top floor, got on the stairs and went to the top. The door said an alarm would sound if opened, I figured it would be silent and trigger something in an office and some security guard would check it out. So I opened it and took the stairs down a couple floors and waited. Sure enough I heard the service elevator go all the way to the top floor and someone opened the door to the stairwell. I left without issue.

My question is, do the high rise apartments generally have the same type of security? Aside from the concierge, is there usually anyone else there at one in the morning?

Also, any general tips?

Appreciate any helpful info

too many general questions for one general answer

like Steed says each location is different

roof tops are highly exposed in urban areas ask yourself can you bee seen up there by someone in a neighboring building? are they accustomed to seeing people on that roof?

the roof of the Federal Reserve bank might be different than a high rise condo with a hot tub on the roof that everyone uses

theres another thread about roofs here in this forum

Camo? That one looks more like it needs a hammock.

Anyway, I was on my phone during my last post because I was trying to contact a friend who could bring beer up to me.

Camo is easy on this one; Polo shirt and khaki pants.
Hammock optional, beer mandatory.

That would be blue jeans and a t-shirt with lots of lame tattoos.
Nerds are sometimes known to be successful and may lurk in and around roof top penthouses.

Skinheads are yesterday's neo-nazis. Hell, I saw a bunch of skinheads from the roof I was on two days ago. They didn't have tiki torches or anything.

I'm surprised you have them in Korea.
Korea is a strange place.
I rarely see them here, thankfully.

I was overlooking a music festival. Skinheads are everywhere in the world where you can find punk and reggae/ska music.

Alt-right racial extremists are mostly located in America, though I know one American white nationalist living here who runs a major alt-right Facebook page. There's a Korean version of the alt-right called Ilbe, but their trolling activities aren't quite as racially based.

Windows and roofs are usually my bread and butter. The beauty of (small) numbers is we have a guy watching the outside while we're inside, more so in locations that are watched around here (i.e.: power plant, red brick queen, six flags). The way I see it is, if you're caught by a window or on a roof (not talking about stairs here... :p ), it's probably because you were careless.

EXAMPLE STORY TIME!!!

Fable, myself, and a guest were doing a low-profile spanish manor-esque care center in my fresher years as an explorer. Two stories of a square shaped layout, rooms outlining within the outside wall. Neighborhood Watch rolls up and shines their lights across the right side face of the building, shooting rays of light into the hallway. I lost visual of the vehicle after the lights went off. I made my about a hundred feet closer to where I knew my car was, before checking outside the window. I huggged a corner and cut the pie: found nothing, I then proceeded to lean my body out of th window. That's when the headlights came back on, lighting my up like main quest character. We were driving down General DeGaulle about 45 seconds later.

Moral of the story: don't LEAVE the window, nor stand infront of it.

My thing about the roof is unless you know what to look for, you can never trust a roof. Maybe I can start a thread to crash course other on identifying them for safety purposes, for those enticed to see the world from a roof. Anyway, falling through a roof can change your night in a drastic way. Though I do love a good roof-top view, sometimes it's just not worth it,

I tend to be cautious around windows, but rooftops are my go-to with UrbEx. People don't look up nearly as much as you think they do, and as long as you're not loud or waving lights around, you'll very rarely be spotted. As far as safety goes, I do more active sites, with little risk or the roof collapsing under me, but with older tiled rooftops, I'm definitely more cautious.

Security depends building to building--there are buildings with almost no security, and buildings with tons of it. It's up to you to scout it out and figure out which is which.

Wait, they dress like that? Shit, my regular attire is a polo and tan or green cargo shorts. Surely we nonbigots can wear polos and khakis without being mistaken for neonazis, right?
