Three stages of my life, you could say.

Growing up in the "suburb" of Kansas City that was literally a couple blocks from the "hood" me and the homie would travel as far as our bikes and elementary school legs would take us. Exploring drains, railroad cars, backyards, etc. We kinda shelved the trespassing stuff when we got chased out of some guys three row vineyard as he waved what we still swear was a shotgun.

Fast forward to 2010 when I started working at Lansing Correctional Facility - built in 1859. I used to volunteer for security check overtime on night shift which took me allover the grounds, basements, old warehouses, the farms, etc. I got to see some absolutely awesome, and pretty friggin creepy, places. The old territorial jailhouse is still standing and is a cool place I can say I have spent a lot of time in.

A while back the girl and I got into watching Explore With Us and then Explore With Josh (and now everyone else) on YouTube. We've been going out and checking out some cool places and have since gotten my little brother and his girlfriend in on it as well.

New camera will be here Friday and I'll be able to start sharing some with you.

I started exploring when I was around 10-11 years old.
At that time I didn't even know what Urbex was, I just wanted to go where others didn't go to get some peace and quiet.

When I was younger there was an abandoned valve manufacture that all the kids would explore.
As kids we would walk around town a lot and we'd find abandoned buildings and investigate, it's just what you did when you're young, curious and invincible.
I got older and started getting into photography and found different urbex communities online. Seeing everyone else's pics is a huge encouragement.
In my province there was a scandal with the provincial government back in the 40s and 50s relabeling orphans as mentally ill in order to get more funding.
A few of these asylums still exist, exploring and researching this has become a bit of a personal obsession. I think history should be preserved, especially the bad stuff. The lest we forget kind of thing.

When I was 14, I was allowed to ride my bike to the heart of downtown, five miles away. From there, I could ride wherever I wanted so long as I carried a cell phone and was back by dinner. I used to spend all summer riding around.

I grew fascinated with the less polished parts of the city- the graffiti under bridges, the homeless camp on the river, the back alleys. That fascination eventually led to its obvious conclusion in the form of an abandoned factory/warehouse right on the river. I've been exploring ever since.

like most, it started from when I was much younger and never knew that "urban exploring" was a thing

I spent a lot of time in the woods around my childhood home, deeper into the woods was actually remnants of an abandoned coal mine facility. Which considered of a warehouse, mine cart tracks and random stuff I would find. Farther up in the woods there was also a tiny junkyard filled with old abandoned cars, even a semi before. I would spend hours up there finding new things and exploring. I practically grew up there when I was a little child, I should make it up there sometime again but it always seems to be a sad visit

And it just processed, Just this feeling of adventure and thrill you find when you find a place. All the things that might be in there, the history, the smell, the look, Everything. I always hated how I feel that there is nothing new to discover, how we have everything documented, labeled and found. Having this as a hobby just gives me a sense that i'm discovering new things that others cant see, it makes me feel like I have something others don't, a experience in aspects that have long been over, and i'm thankful for that to some extent

feel. alive.

IDK, when I was a kid, we used to ride our bikes in an incomplete subway tunnel. We used to explore abandoned buildings.

With the advent of FidoNet, I found out this thing I'd been doing since I was in grade school was called "vadding".

When I was younger, my family and I would go to the Fort Worden bunkers near Port Townsend almost every year during spring break, and that got me really interested in exploring abandoned places. I remember climbing the ladders, running through the empty hallways, and exploring the underground rooms there. Each year I went back I'd find new things and buildings that I didn't notice before.

Then in middle school, I think, there was a house that got abandoned in the woods near my neighborhood. That was sort of like my first actual exploration. The house had books, dishes, and many things left behind, and there were plants growing all over. It was eventually demolished and now a new house got built there. I still regret that I didn't visit it more while it was still around.

I eventually came to know that there was a community for urban exploration, but I didn't really start going to places until I graduated from high school last year (since I was so busy).

You reminded me of an almost identical story (when I was aged between 8 & 12). This "haunted" house had a "corpse" wrapped up on the bed in the front bedroom. Finally me and a friend built up the courage and went in through the back door. I could hear my heart beating louder with each step as we crept down the dark dusty hallway. Just as we got to the front room, with my heart pounding through my shirt, an old man jumped out screaming at us. I pushed my friend out of the way and ran so hard through the back door that it opened outwards even though it shouldn't have (in my head I was certain there was a neat cartoonesque figure of me smashed into the door). I didn't stop running until I was home in my bedroom.

It turns out it was my friend's older brother in an old man mask. I'd been set up!

And the corpse? Just a rolled up mattress.

You can not create that feeling as an adult.

Fucking awesome!

Hahaha that is piss funny!

When we were teenagers me and my brother disturbed a bloke sleeping in a bathtub in the old Humes concrete factory in Subiaco. We were already shitting ourselves because we thought he was dead. Shat even more when he sat up and yelled at us to fuck off.

Also I'm still baffled as to how the fuck a fancy old claw footed cast iron bathtub ended up in that place.

I had just gotten my car. 17 years old with a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. Me and the boys were rolling down the countryside when we stumbled upon an "abandoned house". We stopped to have a look. We were all so scared back then. After we went in and checked it out, we learned it had been abandoned since 1195 or something! after that, i was hooked on UrbEX

There's one abandoned place near me that a ton of people go to, and I had always wanted to go. Once I bought my new camera I had a better reason to go, so I finally did. Abandoned/ruined/decaying stuff like that has appealed to me for a while now but I never actually began exploring until this past summer.

The main reason me an my friends got into Urban Exploration was because we would all use to climb our school roof on weekends and eat Subway on top of it. We got caught once and I stayed away from it myself, but they kept going up there. Later I, once again, go into it. Once I started going up again, me and my friends began to find other places to trespass. This is when we discovered this site and now it has become more of a hobby. So my question for all you vets and mods and premium members out there, what was your first Urban Exploration Experience and/or what got you interested?

PS-Sorry if this question has been answered before, just curious.

i got interested in urban exploration by watching theproperpeople on youtube.i found it very cool and it really exited that explorer side i got in me.i also love all the beauty you can find when you go urban exploring at times.

Or maybe it was a typo?

I haven't done much exploring outside of a few places in and around my city, but one of the things I love most is the aesthetic and history behind abandoned locations, especially schools and hospitals. I had my first Urbex experience at an abandoned warehouse close to where I lived outside the city and I was hooked. I'm a sucker for local history so I love researching and learning about what a location was before it was left behind.

Somehow I stumbled upon Alexplorer's website when I was a lot younger and got hooked on the idea of going into tunnels and seeing the "underworld." Fast forward more than a decade and here I am poking my head into every hole in the ground I find.

In 6th grade my teacher introduced us to a poem called "When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer" and I connected to it in the sense where I'd rather go out into the world and explore forgotten lands instead of having to forcefully learn about them in a classroom.

Branching off of this I got interested in photography and architecture around the same time, and it just furthered my curiosity when it came to abandoned places. Driving to practice every weekend I would pass this set of abandoned and secluded brick buildings, which I later found to be an abandoned psych school, and would spend many of my summer days with friends exploring the fields & tunnels.

I am still in love with the character of these buildings and the feeling I get when exploring and when I get the perfect shot.

A crappy trailer down the road that some moron used to deal meth in or something. No other story besides that, just an old trailer build in the 70s.

Oh and there was KPPC but i only drove by that a few times going fishing. I would kill to go back.

Me too!
It was the Alexplorer website and a Fort Worth Star Telegram article featuring Captain_Slow (which incidentally, is how I found you guys) that enlightened me to the community aspect of something which up until that point I had been actively participating in alone.

well, there was an abandoned factory behind my house until I was about 6 (it's since been re-purposed), and that was really the beginning. My town has a lot of ruins from various burned out factories, with little left but a few walls. These were easily accessible for me from an early age, so there was a logical progression from these to more and more interesting places.
I know a lot of people on this site don't like Weird NJ, but it was really a big influence on me when I was younger. That is where I first learned about the larger world of abandonment. The funny thing is, my parents did nothing but encourage me. They bought me all kinds of books on local ghost towns, history, and related topics.
