Did a bit of poking around in a certain abandoned jail in Northern Virginia. Was poring down rain so I couldn't bring my Nikon. But snapped a few shots with my phone. Access to the site is gated off so a little hike was in order. Couldn't get in to many of the buildings due to vegetation and degradation. Still worth a trip back, though better in the winter I would think.

you just parked in front of the fence? Did the next door neighbor see you?

I am sure they did. But I was there and gone inside of 40 minutes and not from the area.

Gotcha. Hopefully they don't catch on that people are going back there. It's a nice quiet/easy/relatively untouched spot.

but what about the next guy that wants to visit here will the heat be turned up now because of your convenient parking job?

Unlikely. Though there isn't any access to the site without parking somewhere some one will see your car. In the future I will definitely park farther away so I can spend more time poking around there. But there is no "safe" place to park that isn't going to raise questions.

Well I call bull shit on that excuse, where is this place at the end of a 20 mile dead end road surrounded by active federal government property?

If youre willing to walk some there is always some place to park that wont tell everyone and their granny: "hey look we are those teenagers wearing black hoodies sneaking into the old jail again"

The response from lonewolf34:
you just parked in front of the fence? Did the next door neighbor see you?

that pretty much tells me he has been there and is somewhat surprised at your lack of care

zero stealth points for you but whatever ...

Lol, "teenagers sneaking in" what are you 12? If you don't act sketchy people tend to ignore you. And yeah, there isn't any access that doesn't involve crossing active private land before the site. So why don't I do things my way and you do them your way.

because it sounds like your way is messing up things for other explorers and might compromise the site but since youre obviously an expert, go right ahead but why not ask your local explorers where they park ?

I've noticed a lot of people get pretty high and might with morality and ethics of trespassing. My "experience" says people are less likely to care if you only trespass on the property of derelict/abandoned shit. Which is what I did. But they tend to take issue if you trespass on their or active properties. Which is literally everything else surrounding the site. Yeah, maybe the neighbors saw me. But they saw me park right in the open. And go about it professionally. Something that wouldn't be said for some one parking in a neighborhood than sneaking across several different people properties. That looks sketchy as fuck and is going to cause problems. And I don't ask people where they park because that seems to be another things this site throws a fit over. Details.

Yeah, professionally. Don't look and act like a criminal/shady person and people tend not even to think twice about you being some place you shouldn't.

You're saying that parking right in front of a gate that you clearly have no business parking in front of, then getting out of your car and climbing over the gate is not sketchy/shady?

There's nothing remotely 'professional' about that.

I am saying parking in front of a gate no one knows whether or no I have permission to be in front of. Then walking around it like I belong there, and on down the road like it was nothing. Is better than parking any where else that is still private property then sneaking through the woods like a thief.

The neighbors are going to know if you belong or not. They've probably been living there long enough to know when someone who has permission to be there rolls up to the gate. People with permission to be there would probably have keys to unlock that gate, I doubt they have to park and walk in.

Judging from your pics it looks like a semi regularly traveled service road to a cell tower. So I doubt it when you say

What if someone with permission to be there pulled up and found your car sitting right in the way? People are more likely to be nice and lenient with you when you don't inconvenience them.

And the owners of the site could show up. Or the cops could do a random sweep. Or a bum living in the wreckage could go vigilante murderer. This is what we do. Trespassing is illegal no matter how clever or smooth you make it. I searched the surrounding area and determined that there was no practical access and made the best call I could. You think you can do it better? Go to the site. Report back to us.

When did I say I could? This isn't a competition. The only thing that people in this thread are doing is trying to get you to think about what you are doing, a little bit more. We're offering you advice.

Yes, trespassing is illegal no matter how clever or smooth you make it, which is why it's better to not be blatantly obvious and advertise where you're trespassing, and to be respectful and mindful of other people who might want to enjoy the place just like you did. Or is that just some absurd and ridiculous, high and mighty, morals and ethics of mine?

nobody is questioning the morality of trespassing or being high and mighty

my point is doing stuff that calls attention to a location unnecessarily is bad karma, it may not bother you since you already got your glory and your pics, and didn't get caught so good for you but what about the next guy to visit?

o.p. simply does not get it

and then defends his inconsiderate way of doing things at the expense of his fellow local explorers

No, I am simply stating that given the sites nature, being between a busy highway and a residential neighborhood. There is no perfect point of entry. No where you park will you go unnoticed. And no path to the site is open. For a quick scouting jaunt, I believed parking in front of the gate, and going right there and back was the best option. For the future incursion I have planned I will be parking several miles away at night. And using NVG's to cross the private lands unnoticed. Now if you had approached it politely at first that would have been one thing, but you didn't. So yeah, I feel a little defensive being accosted by people who aren't familiar with the site and that are convinced the way they do things is the only way. Which it isn't. I haven't ruined anything for anybody. As the only person who "may" have noticed my presence likely didn't care given how I went about it.
